This thread fucking blows but in actual battle on land you would commonly see the square 'crossed stars' flag, which is known as the "confederate battle flag", it was designed for land BATTLE (easier to recognize the flag at a distance) and was used in a stylized form by many different units. It was NOT a naval flag, a naval version of the flag was later designed with an elongated shape [rectangular rather than square] and was utilized in naval operations for the remainder of the war.
The roots of the battle flag lie in secessionist flags from the pre-war era, which were commonly hoisted during secessionist debates across the south and most notably in Virginia. I can recall from Robertson's biography on Stonewall Jackson, when Jackson was a professor at VMI a group of young cadets hoisted a secessionist flag, I believe on Feb 22nd (George Washington's birthday) and Jackson had them taken to task for it. Jackson wasn't in favor of secession himself (most of Virginia wasn't) until Lincoln issued a mandate requiring Virginia to raise some thousands of troops to go to war against the south, at which point Virginia refused and popular sentiment made a full 180 in less than a month, secession being confirmed by a vote near-instantaneously. Don't take this to mean that Jackson was in any way lukewarm about his support for the South, I can recall a time that he stated something along the lines of "if the North were to win this war, I believe it would be the end of all free and responsible government on this continent", he was right but it is also true that Jackson's allegiances were first to his State (Virginia), and he stated several times in the pre-war period that he would follow Virginia and perform his duty for her. I have a few copies of Osprey books on the civil war flags if anyone wants me to post them.
