ET Legacy for some reason is even more buggy than the original game, though they released an update recently that might have unfucked it. There were also some server mods on (Jaymod?) to increase the available gameplay options (and accelerate leveling for the 2 day game night) but it added to the bugginess. Lastly it was only running the 6 original maps.

That's the issue with older games. You just can't install them and play the full experience out of the box, you have to tweak and download additional stuff, like maps & mods. This is not a proiblem if you already played the game in the past, but it is off putting for new players.Anyway, here is a good general guide for anyone

Huh? It's exactly the opposite. With older games you can play the full experience right out of the box. Almost always without installation. It's only new shit that doesn't even come with a box, and makes you rent a digital license to install part of the game, then pay extra for the rest of the game. Then the servers go down or people simply stop playing, so your install is useless forever. Meanwhile, my cart of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt works as good as ever.

Don't forget the custom server stuff and the random disconnects that happen while downloading it so you have to restart the game.

For me as a Macfag back in the day, there was also the additional hassle of manually forcing everything you described into working on a different platform without any of the fanmade automatic tools normally used to wrangle them, and occasional server outages as the Mac port didn't get updates at the same time as everyone else. Even Loonixfags had WINE to fall back on. At least Macfags ultimately got revenge, when Gayspy Arcade shut down, and everyone was only saved by the alternative metabrowser we'd cobbled together, GamerAnger.

Dirty Bomb was full of microtransactions, with obtuse forms of money grubbing like random loadouts from loot boxes and ridiculously expensive mercenaries, each one being more ridiculous and op than the last, only to often see them later nerfed into uselesness because the devs were too stupid to realize exactly what kind of audience their game was designed for.

Finally, instead of allowing players to run their own servers, let alone just give the game away for free now that's its a complete failure, they shut it down.

I played that game, it wasn't ET, not by a long shot. It could've been, had the devs not been completely retarded, but it wasn't.

What's your take on the RTCW multiplayer vs ET rivalry? Back when ET came out people said ET was a dumbed down RTCW with the lower rate of fire, the XP system, the reduced ammo scarcity and what not. One of the rare shooters to ever click with me, back when multiplayer gaming was about having a good time. I can still recall most the autists that were in my clan, and that XFire ripping sound is ingrained in my brain. Was pretty amazed when I recognized old names in Legacy a few years ago. Might just reinstall again.
