I once built a giant model of the OG Gameboy and placed a custom LCD screen inside of it built to the same resolution of the original.
I was originally planning to get the original internals of an actual GB and place it inside to make a fully functional massive Gameboy, but I ended up just playing silly animations on it instead.

Nobody talks about this game much. Brainlet child me got like 3/4 of the way through and stopped because of a round of tests/finals. Forgot why I didn't finish. Didn't really understand the mechanics of what to do with mutants. Got to the level where you need to find the special set of armor needed to fight this world's boss that could appear at any time. I think it was a post-apoco world?

To beat Su-Zaku you needed to assemble an item to remove his invincibility.
Mutants randomly gain stats after battles and also have a couple slots for randomly learned magic.
I think it's worth going back and finishing considering it was designed to be beaten in 6-8 hours. It has spotty programming and a bad translation but IMO the setting and music make up for it. There's a Wonderswan Color remake with a fan translation (http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1614/) but I haven't played it. It looks a bit nicer and makes evolving your monsters easier, but the music sounds worse so eh.

Appreciate the info! I think I will go back. Have the cartridge in the closet still, but that romhack sounds interesting. Looking through the pdf, had to laugh when they mentioned a party of 2human2mutant was difficult. Highly confident that was my party composition for the duration of the game. 6-8 hours sounds kinda strange though; I remember grinding in it. Maybe wasn't necessary. Although, my only other previous RPG experience at that time was Dragon Warrior on NES, which brainlet me never beat as well, lol.

Here's a game I find very cute, despite not really having that much to go on in the gameplay department. babbies first run and gun. Play as a little kid piloting a mech. The Japanese version has a girl character if that's more your thing. There's also a sequel which is different, but about the same quality.

Metroid 2 finally got a good colorization for anybody that missed it like I did. It's on the same level as the recent Super Mario Land 2 DX hack that adds Luigi as a playable character, and it's near completion. The guy's still working on it and fixing any bugs people find, and eventually he wants to improve performance over the original GB game by taking advantage of the hardware upgrade, but it's considered out-of-beta now.
Here's the version 1.3 prepatched, but somebody just posted that the ending screen's palette is fucked up, so that's not been fixed yet.
