By actually work, does that mean you can instantly kill someone or that using the Insta kill is a viable option? Because the two, while similar, has different sized lists.

Final Fantasy 5 is a bit of an odd case. There's about four different kinds of instant death, and three different flags to set a monster as immune to them. Some things might be immune to black mage's instant death, but vulnerable to time magic's version, etc. Autoreflect and being undead aren't strict immunities to level 5 death, but they make it functionally impossible to land it successfully.

Also, Live-a-Live.

PS4 (and possibly the older PS games but I did not play them) had type-based death spells. There were enemy types in the game but you had to intuit them for yourself or find out from a friend/magazine. For example, Spark is a death spell that works like 95% of the time on robots and 5% of the time on everything else. I had to figure this one out because I was stuck in a dungeon, unable to reach the end boss with enough MP to kill it, until I realized I coulr kill all the robots with a cheap death spell that wasn't working before.

I can recall a couple of RPGs where poison had an increase in the damage it would dole out, and there were a few opponents who had massive defenses, massive HP pools, or otherwise were a pain in the ass, so you poisoned them and turtled like a motherfuck until the poison was doing ticks in insane numbers.

in Trails of Cold Steel (1 and 2 at least) you've got deathblows which are insta kills, petrification and freezing which invoke insta kill if a target is hit while inflicted with either, and vanish which makes the target vanish from the battlefield for a few turns but if all enemies are vanished then the encounter is won i.e. insta killed

also the bosses are all immune to these statuses but enemies have abilities which can inflict them

>Games where instant death spells cast by the player actually work

This spell is introduced in Quest for Glory III and has a 100% guaranteed kill rate. It kills everything in a five mile radius. Including the caster, who is at ground zero. It's treated as a joke, and a kind of - "Well, technically you DID defeat the final bad guy - but surely there's a better and more heroic way".

Imagine of Ad Avis had half a braincell in his head and realized that he didn't need to summon Iblis or Avoozl. He could have just trained a crack team of brainwashed wizards with his mind control powers to warp into any area in the world, scream alalalalallalala, and nuke anybody who'd stand against him in the ultimate suicide bombing scheme. Even would have helped him with his Katrina problem, since I'm pretty sure even Vampires can't survive ground zero of a nuke.
