I have an 1.6 xbox that is softmodded that can run GTA SA from a IDE HDD just fine. I'm not sure what softmod it has since I bought it already modded but the default dash is an old version of Evox.

I played for a few hours and noticed a few framedrops here and there and I got curious whether it was normal or the HDD was failing so I decided to test in another xbox. This one is an 1.1 that has had the TSOP flashed with Xecuter2 5035 and as default dash it has a newish version of Unleashx. This xbox boot the game but it hangs at the splash screen that prompts you to "press start". I tried with another 1.0 xbox also flashed with xecuter 5035 with the same results.

I played around with game region, language, IGR, etc to no avail.

Googling gives few results which is strange for such a high profile game so I think there is something wrong with my setup.

Any ideas?

wouldnt it be better to just play the pc port and mod it so it looks like the console version?

I prefer to play on consoles with a CRT for the retro experience. Besides that, I find it odd that few people seem to have had the same problem I have given that it's a game that has been played by millions. I'd like to find a solution if possible.

The Xbox ports of GTA are worse than the PS2 versions, the Xbox ports are equivalent to the PC versions except GTA3, the only one which was handled properly. I beat GTASA on the Xbox recently and only had noteworthy issues during flight missions where I was going through clouds, otherwise it was alright from start to finish. GTASA may have copy protection that was addressed in the last versions of unleashX or other more modern dashboards.

Easiest thing it could be is the game files are broken in some way

Get one from here and extract it from the .iso

Second if you're using a SATA drive it could be the IDE <-> SATA thing, get a Startech.com one, the green chink one are crap and will cause issues first of which being longer loads.

You'd probably be better off trying to run GTASA through CRT emudriver / 15Khz modes on linux then (not sure it's possible but I don't think it shouldn't be.), complete with the console restoration mods that allows for PS2 effects and XBOX reflections / model upgrades.

Update your mods. Here's a simple tutorial: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zdg9-ydqt8 on mobile so no embed

I beat GTA SA on the PS2 back in the day and I remember it looked different.

>>16160210

I got my files from on of those "XBOX HDD ready" torrents. Supposedly it was tested until it was playable.

The softmoded xbox runs the game fine. The ones that have the tsop flashed have the problem.

The Xbox version of GTA SA had less effects than the PS2 version and looked a bit duller, but the framerate was better and a lot smoother. I remember the PS2 version having frame drops to single digits when too much shit was happening on the screen (like during rampages or when you were running away from police at 5 stars for example).

I played both back in the day and my preference was for the Xbox version because of this.

Tried with a redump iso from archive.org with the same result.

The PS2 version is locked at 24fps son, the only time it chugs is if you use the flying cars+all cars have infinite nitro cheats.

>hurrr you're wrong the PS2 version is locked at 24fps durrrrr

I don't think you truly understand the meaning of fps lock. "fps cap" is a more correct definition anyways.

The Xbox version also has a max fps cap (though it's 30 fps rather than 24 fps like on PS2).

Anyways my point is, framerate caps only limit max fps, your post seems to imply that they prevent the game from dropping below the "fps lock" and that's not the case at all. 24 fps cap or 30 fps cap doesn't mean your game can't drop to 10 fps.

>the only time it chugs is if you use the flying cars+all cars have infinite nitro cheats.

Try using the rocket launcher or flamethrower agains a 5-star police roadblock on the PS2 version, and then do the same on the Xbox version. The PS2 version really can't handle multiple explosions and fire effects well.

Now that I reread your post maybe it has to do with the kernel version, GTA:SA was made on a devkit using v5849, your TSOP has 5035 unless it means something else

Maybe look into that?

not really, it took some serious dumps on the Xbox. Beat it around november last year.

GTASA pretty much ran like shit on any platform it was first released for, even PC Running it just with the recommended requirements was a crapshoot at best and it could still crap out on much higher end hardware.

047cc2  No.16168048

OP here.

This is bizarre.

I flashed two other bioses (iND-BiOS 5003 and EvoX M8+) with the same results. I even wiped the HDD of one xbox and reinstalled everything from scratch and nothing changed.

Further, I copied two other version of GTA SA to the softmodded xbox (one from the HDD Ready torrent and another dumped from a redump iso) and now the games hangs at the same place as the other consoles.

It would seem that the game was patched to run under a very specific configuration.

There's no real point running it at higher FPS than 24 because the old GTAs had their physics tied to their framerate. Run SA on a modern PC with like over 120 FPS and everything just goes haywire.
