I've noticed over the past few years that they have barely bothered to support the Xbox directly. Everything is apart of their "Universal Windows Platform", it looks like they're planning on pushing for their own games on Windows more.
I mean, what games do they even have anymore? Halo? The effort they put into exclusives in the OG Xbox and 360 era isn't there anymore.

They've been trying to push Windows 10 as their new vidya platform and there are a few games that suffered massively for it since said games had to put the games running on the Windows 10/Store above any other priority, including bux fixes, performance, game content, etc. Gigantic's the only named example I can think of, there were two other games whose names I had forgotten.

It's one of their last major portfolio in the consumer space, and the one that they're really close to "getting right" after ~2 decades of cash burning. Their other cashcows are corporate and enterprise productivity stuff. I guess you can sort of count Windows as "consumer", but it doesn't spark any kind of positive image in the consumer's mind.
My guess is Microsoft realize that if they were to give up on the Xbox now, they'd slowly become the next IBM, then either Google or Apple will take over their place.

If they call a bunch of things besides a console "XBox" and stop focusing on the console, the console is dead. You're basically describing MS abandoning the XBox console and instead turning it into something else. It's just them trying to save face, they've always had other gaming platforms (like Windows).
Xbox has always been a second or third place brand. It's going to be in third this generation, Switch sold twice as much in the first year.
I don't know why MS would keep focusing on XBox, they only really care about enterprise now and they don't think that desktops are the future. Their phones were a huge disappointment. Xbone and PS4 both being based on AMD APUs meant that it was going to be a head to head battle and one was going to clearly win and the other wouldn't, because you can't have much of an advantage in hardware when you are using extremely similar CPUs and GPUs.
If there is an XBox after XboneX, it'll be some copycat hybrid console based on Windows Phone. In fact, I would bet some money that the next Xbox will be a hybrid thing based on Windows Phone (basically just copying Switch) and it'll fail before MS just gives up on gaming consoles. Once Nintendo loses their purely kiddie game image (which they will with games like Bayo and Astral Chain), Xbox brand will become even less appealing. You will have Gaystation 5 Pozbox for normalfags who think games mean interactive QTE movies, Nintendo for everything else, and MS trying to be relevant.
At some point, it's going to be more worthwhile for MS to start selling off IP to Sony and Nintendo than it will be for them to keep making console hardware. If the Scalebound rumor is true, we are already starting to see it happen. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw games like Banjo Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing get put up for sale if Scalebound comes out on Switch. At least one can hope.
Xbox is not in good shape. Look at their exclusives. Crackdown 3, Battletoads by post-Stamper bros Rare, Sea of Thieves, Session (a kikestarted skateboard game), Halo. And they are all coming to PC. MS has already given up trying to get people who have a gaming PC to buy an Xbone. Consoles seem to work best when they work to compliment other consoles and PC. Xbone is nothing but stuff you can get on PC and multiplats. It has the most niche market of all the consoles.

The price of a gaming PC has gone down a lot compared to when the PS3 and 360 came out. PC gaming has become much more accessible and popular too. The PC now has a lot of mass appeal while the distinction between a console and PC has shrunk at the same time. Microsoft can't give their pre-built locked-down PCs called xboxes much of a reason to exist any more.
Who's going to compete with Sony? There is still going to be a market for consoles.

The Xbox isn't going to die, but it will become less of a focus. The traditional Xbox Line will become an increasingly outmoded legacy box designed specifically for "console enthusiasts" - but will really be more like a SteamBox but even more streamlined. A lot of people like the idea of having a system that acts as a dedicated gaming PC - but are either too stupid, too lazy, or too intimidated by the options and responsibility for administration. They just want to put the game in and play. There's still a huge market for this type of device, so MS isn't going to abandon it - but it will increasingly become a legacy platform.
Meanwhile, having Xbox content available on multiple platforms (either natively on PC via Play Anywhere - or via streaming through an Xbox App) means there's really no direct need to actually own Xbox hardware. While this could potentially open up the market to new customers for software and services (where they make the bulk of their profit in the division), having lower sell-through numbers on actual hardware could mean that third parties nervous about the squishy metrics of "engagement" would skip over the platform. However, with everything being x86 standard architecture and being incredibly easy to port - coupled with having at least one "Xbox model" to which they can target for performance - I think MS is banking on UWP to be attractive enough to get devs to just port to their sandbox environment and from there it should be compatible with any Windows device natively - as well as other devices so long as Microsoft develops a UWP portal app which is independent of Windows itself. So actual development support may not drop off the way people think it would - even if Xbox 2 only sells 10 million units.
The biggest hurdle to this that I can see is that PC is the prime platform for UWP integration as a forerunner - and PC users aren't interested in that locked-down "app" bullshit… mobile devices aren't powerful enough to handle newer games running in UWP, and the competition sure as fuck isn't going to just allow MS free license to open up their own marketplace to compete with their native marketplaces.
I feel like they've got 80% of a plan, and are just kind of in the process of throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks in terms of deployment.

>They really sealed the deal with Crackdown.
Crackdown was doomed from the start. Hell, that was one of the titles that was approved under Mattrick, what the fuck did people expect? Being able to pivot mid-development and turn a shit product into a good one is damned difficult to pull off, and usually requires them to strip the current build for salvagable assets and start over. That's why so many games just end up getting flat-out canceled rather than reworked to make some of that money back. Further, once the Xbox really hit rock bottom post launch - it was already damned neared impossible for them to turn things around. The money and effort it would require to try to regain that momentum just wouldn't be worth it, especially not when they could just patch things along until they could relaunch on the next generation with a clean slate.
Xbox One failed miserably, and the only people actually upset with how Crackdown 3 and other newer releases turned out are people who didn't recognize that it was already over before it began. Microsoft are building infrastructure now to try to take another shot next generation - and some of those improvements will make it to the current gen as a test sample to gauge the market, yeah - but they'll only shoot themselves in the foot if they waste time and resources distracting themselves now trying salvage this flaming turd. To everyone else, they expected Crackdown 3 to be mediocre at best, or at the very least are not surprised at all that it ended up being underwhelming. Especially if they payed any attention at all to it's development history or the stories coming out of other partners working with Microsoft who have been burned (like Platinum, Obsidian, Darkside, Bungie, Lionhead, holy shit this list could get long)

Actually on topic thanks to the my brother getting the Xbox gamepass that was only 2 bucks for 2 months or something, actually got to play Crackdown 3 for myself.
It's not shit at the very least. It feels and plays like a Crackdown game and seems to have everything one should have, The agency director is still very much his old self, so there isn't much to complain about from a gameplay perspective, just you know this isn't a game that needed to be announced 5 years ago and leave everyone hanging, until the hype died. I think the only real shame is that the wing suit from Crackdown 2 isn't in the game, but for a game that was pretty much in development hell Crackdown 3 came out allot more solid then I was expecting. At least it's a GAME that lets my play THE GAME, and not a fucking movie pretending to be a game.
d97a11 No.16146039
>>16145893
It's still shit, it's just not nearly as shit as everyone seems to be making it out to be. At least single-player. Multiplayer looks to be a hot mess of a bloated carcass pushed out on to the market, and you can really tell two entirely different dev teams worked on the game. As far as single-player goes, I actually don't have much to complain about - but the single biggest issue for me is a major one. That being the lock-on system, which has absolutely no place on the PC version and tends to get in the way more than it helps. Free-aim at close range feels good and satisfying, but any kind of intermediate to long range aiming causes massive bullet spread and instead of being able to look down the barrel to tighten your aim like you would in most other games, well you still do that but it tacks on the targeting lock-on. It takes some getting used to in practice, but you can't shake the feeling that it's just cheap as fuck and unsatisfying unless you're pulling off some complex environmental jump sequences, but since your camera is facing the target - it's hard or impossible to accurately navigate the chaotic complex environment in a way that feels good.
Collecting orbs is still autistically soothing though.
4166fa No.16146047
>>16146039
Well I can see the problem when using a mouse and wanting precision, but the lock on system is the exact same it's been since Crackdown 1 so it's clearly still balance around a controller.
Boosting and round and double jumping does feel good though, When I saw and older gameplay demonstration years ago it looked like it was gonna feel extremely stiff, but it actually smooth.
I can't speak for the multiplayer and i don't have much on an intention of playing it anyway.
May main point is as far as the single player goes, it defiantly is a Crackdown game, and that's enough for me after having fairly low expectations.

The only reason everyone bought Crackdown 1 was for the Halo 3 beta, it just so happened that the actual game they bought ended up being good.
Crackdown 2 had better core gameplay, but the structure of the game wasn't nearly as interesting as the first one, you ended up just doing the same tasks over and over again.
Crackdown 3 is slightly better in this regard since you have actual targets again but your still forced to do some busy work before your aloud to take them out.
Crackdown 1 is still king in regard of it's structure. You are given complete freedom to make any choice you want. You could at any point try and take out any of the 3 kingpins if you felt you were good enough, the thing was that if you attempted to do so too early you were very likely to just get you shit kicked in since with out taking out their underlings their defensive are legitimately good and capable of beating you, everything in Crackdown 1 progressions felt perfect since it was completely up to the player, the game simply told you when it may or may not be a good time to try and take a target out.

I think it all depends on their success in the pc market. I think they realize that pc is a safe vector for them, where "home entertainment" is much more volatile and competitive.
I believe their strategy is to get a foothold in pc by eating into steam's share of the market. If they can do that, then I think you'd see Xbox change into some kind of hybrid device, like one of the original steamboxes, or an Nvidia shield .
Like a pc streaming device with the capability to play (some/most) games directly for those poor fags who can't afford a good pc.
But I definitely see them trying to focus on pc more in the future. But anyone with a sane brain should be moving to Linux at this point, so idk how that will go for them.
