Let's talk about Half Life mods, both for the first and second game, and about Half Life in general. What is your favourite Half Life 1 mod? What is your favourite Half Life 2 mod? What have you been playing recently connected to those mods? Any recommendations?
I have been playing Half-Rats just a while ago and it kind of sucks dick, being mostly frustrating. The sound design was kind of creepy at first, but the wails got annoying after a while and not very scary. I would say that the main character is annoying as well with how overly verbose he is but seeing that going through the levels just isn't too fun, I prefer to listen to his babbling than to deal with randomly placed reskinned enemies. I'm still going to try and beat the mod in hopes that the sequel is better.

HC2 is an amazing mod, and despite the initial design as "unfair half-life", it grows into an amazing mod with fantastic map design. Highly recommend it to people that haven't played it

the gameplay is 'okay' and the textures are kinda impressive. Least you can give it that.
HR: Parasomnia isn't half bad, but the sound design is a little shit. Environmental sounds may play a bit too often for my taste.
Vending machines are probably trying to imitate bioshock, but the volume is blown out and painfully loud to the ears even with drastically lowered volume. Could be a goldsrc bug on modern hardware, but I don't know.
Have recently been playing Echos, but haven't gotten past what is essentially a grunt fest gauntlet on the highest difficulty. It's a solid mod from what I've played so far.

Point of View and Azure Sheep were two of the best Half-Life 1 mods ever made. But somehow, even some of the way older mods, like U.S.S. Darkstar and the Timeline trilogy are still really amazing, and good to revisit even all these years later. I might be a little biased though, because I've always just enjoyed how Gold Source plays.

In the Timeline series, which had a very cool part where you launched into orbit and later returned in an escape pod, one of the bad endings was to die in 9/11. Burgers protested and shut it down.

I miss mods like these, they were enabled by the fast-and-loose file restrictions and the Quake engine's ability to download missing files from the server. Just repurposing existing assets from the game to do wacky shit.

oh christ you're taking me back now. I used to scour the internet for HL1 single-player mods but god knows I've forgotten most of them. Some that come to mind are Half-Quake, Heart of Evil, They Hunger… there was a good one that came out late that was a really half-decent Call of Cthulhu themed game.
There was another one that I cannot remember for the life of me but involved time-travel, had some explicit sexual content (there's a grunt getting a handjob from a naked hooker), and a scene straight out of Brazil. Remember the mapping, models, and texture work being really good.

Uncertain Principle, Minerva, Dangerous World were pretty good HL 2 mods.

Half Life Krypton is a pretty neat mod, it involves you infiltrating a military base where there is a portal that can take you to different worlds, and you gotta take a portal to each world, to grab some kind of item and return it to the hub, sadly it's in german only, so it takes a bit of guessing.

There's also the 2 mods, Vengeance and Rebellion, they're 2 french mods that take place after Black Mesa, with Gordon working for the G-man, obviously, the G-man betrays gordon and gordon has to ally himself with an anime girl named Rad to take down the G-man.

I forgot to mention, there's actually bits where both Gordon and Rad talk to each other, and it's kind of charming, specially since it's all in french but with english subtitles, there's a bit where you go through a base exactly like Shadow Moses from MGS1, as well as a Mansion like the one in Resident Evil 1, as well as you get one big open city are to explore.
