But it's not really a harem route. It's just the player gaming the system to max the affections of a number of heroines within the allowed time limit, and the game is unable to recognize this is what they're doing. It's pretty much the Bethesda school of roleplaying.

The writing has degraded a LOT from 3 to 5. We went from subtle writing about death permeating dialogue like "It [your room] is easy to remember because it's at the end." to "Niggas, we gotta stop bullying, the evil adults are at it again." Persona girls are still good, they always have some good ones; Futaba honestly makes 5 worth playing imo. But I would sooner recommend going back and playing P1 instead of P5, you'll get better gameplay and way cooler lore.

I've recently completed 4, and have started playing 3. I don't have a reference as to what Persona was beforehand, but I found them to be fun games. The biggest pain in the ass has been how MP/SP is handled. There's not too many convenient ways to get SP items, so you end up running out by the time you're at the top floor and have to go to the next day or pay.

I've said this a lot, but Persona is an incredibly love-it-or-hate-it series. Some people like all the games and think they're great, some people think the earlier games are great and the later ones are shit, and some people just hate all of them. Personally I'm a fan of all of them with the exception of the first one. The first one is forgettable and shit and garbage and there's a reason most people talk about P2 when talking about older Persona games.
Mechanically I think the series has only gotten better. They got rid of that shitty ass shuffle time bullshit from P3 and P4 and replaced it with negotiations. Story-wise, I don't think P5's story is horrendous like a lot of people say it is, but I do like P4's story better and nothing has beaten 2 and 3 in terms of story.
I guarantee you most people wouldn't hate Persona as much as they do if the series had absolutely no attachment to the SMT name. SMT and Persona are different series falling under the Megaten name. Persona is an SMT game in the same way Smash is a fighting game: it isn't.

These scenes are largely irrelevant, though. Due to the way the story works, even characters at Lv.1 SL will still virtually suck MC's dick at the lategame. Especially notable with P5, where after the lolcheating scene it's just a few more scenes until the HAPPY GO LUCKY ROAD TRIP
Gameplay wise there's also zero penalty.
Just mingle up with whoever you want and laugh at the scene where the game tries and fails to punish you for it.

There are two Persona 2s; Eternal Punishment and Innocent Sin. Innocent Sin was never officially translated but it has a fan translation patch.
The Persona games from 3 and onward are massively different from the first three. You might not like the "new" Persona games just because you liked the "old" ones and vice versa.
You should try P2 Innocent Sin for a few hours and decide whether or not you like old Persona, then try one of the newer games and decide whether or not you like new Persona.
This is very much a "love it or hate it" franchise.
Persona 3 has an objectively superior rerelease called "FES" and a release on the PSP which has a femal protagonist route which is in some ways inferior.
Persona 4 has a version called "Golden" on the Vita with added content which some felt clashed with the tone of the original game. The vast majority considers the new character added into it to be absolute, irredeemable shit. It's a matter of debate whether or not Golden is the superior version.

Marie may be a divisive character that people either extremely hate or not, but Golden is still the definitive version of Persona 4 imo.
One extremely good thing about Golden is that unlike the original, there is no fusion hell. When you fuse personas together, you can pick and choose which skills to pass on. This is miles better than letting the RNG bullshit decide your skills at random.
Other good things about Golden are that the months extend past December and you can participate in Golden-exclusive events like Valentine's Day and going to the beach. Your party members also get their personas upgraded to a 3rd tier, and their dialogue during this final upgrade is pretty great. It gives good closure to their character development as they talk about their strengthened resolve in life.

Marie is shit, but Golden is definitely the superior version of P4. There isn't even any doubt about it. And for putting up with Marie S Link we actually have the, cut from vanilla, Adachi S Link which gives him a much better development as the "bored sociopath" compared to vanilla.
The only reason anyone would even consider Golden to be inferior to Vanilla is someone that don't own a Vita suffering from sour grapes.
