Playing Etrian Odyssey and one of the missions had you spend five days (3600 steps) on a certain floor. If you leave the floor, the mission is over. There is little to actually do there except fight monsters (and you can't avoid these anyway!) The only real way to beat this is to find the somewhat-secret area where you can walk without getting attacked. And so you press directional buttons for 3600 steps…and the reward is some shitty chainmail you can buy anyway. If you didn't find the area, you will very likely die from the random encounters before you ever come close to finishing the mission.
Any other examples?

In Might & Magic 6 there's a bullshit quest where you're tracking down a runaway noble. His location on the world map changes depending on the tour schedule of a circus he joined. The only hint where he might have gone is a throwaway line from an NPC who's implied to be untrustworthy. The circus plays no other role in the game and you get the quest 50 hours after you've learned to ignore it.

Relic weapon quest in FFXIV original version is the absolute worse thing in the history of video games (and I completed it for every weapon in the game).
you had to penta meld your shit (shit had like a 5% chance of success and every time it broke you had to start all over and costs millions of gil every time, you lost the item and the materia), you had to solo with a broken weapon for like 10,000 mobs to feel some meter up on each weapon, among other incredibly gay shit, near impossible speed runs of the dungeons, and killing ifrit xtreme at the end.

The spear isn't that good because it can't combo for shit, but it's pretty fast and scales well with strength so it's really easy to hit max damage with it even in a 1/2/whatever game. It gets outclassed by Masamune, any of the latter ninja swords and greatsowrds depending on the element simply because of comboing and the damage cap. It stays useful a bit longer in zodiac but that's not saying much since you can assfuck Yiazmat with ninja swords since they got a massive buff and can do even more damage with dark robes. Think massive comboes with each hit doing at least 15k damage.

At least in Chrono Trigger there's an understandable reason in that you're fucking with time and paradox the chest in opening it first later, but it does require either being aware of it, or making that particular leap. In tomba 2, there is a quest where you have to find a lost ring. The information given is cryptic at best and the search area is gigantic. Said area is accesible from anywhere in the game, and in the second stage, you may access it by simply dropping in any bottomless pit.
Bottom line is, you have to drop in a very specific part of the stage in order to find it, its not accesible by any other way.

That reminds me of Gurumin. There's a collectible hat/accessory system to the game and each of the items give you unique buffs, most of them useful. Each of the hats is found in the various stages, hidden in various ways. One of the hats is a samurai helmet and it is obtained on a stage with a room that is an homage to Donkey Kong, with the camera switching to a side perspective and rolling rocks coming down ramps that you have to jump over. There is a cryptic number display in the very next room which doesn't seem to do anything. That number is a counter, which counts the number of rocks that reached the end in the last room. So what does this have to do with the stupid hat? You have to wait until the counter reaches 999 and then a chest containing the hat appears. Waiting is not a fucking game mechanic.

Taking Reynauld to the Greatwall, an endgame area with two cyclopes, two chimeras, and a bunch of bandits and a fuck you ambush of Sulphur Saurians at a river crossing. You can grab and carry him to run past the most dangerous sections, only the last Chimera in the Barta Crags will be trouble as it has a huge aggro radius that covers the main road up to the edge of the Soulflayer canyon portal. Another similarly difficult quest is to escort Adaro to the Shadowfort, offered even earlier for worse rewards with only one path available at the time of the quest's earliest availability, crawling with bandits who can oneshot you and a fuckton of hobgoblins. Funfact, the reason why there seems to be an endless wave of hobgoblins/direwolves is because their encounter areas are usually saturated with spawns, easily more than can be loaded in at once, so more "pop in" as you kill their compatriots, though they were technically always there just unloaded.

It would be a good chipset in the early game because it increases wrench damage and recycle yield, but both of those are completely obsolete stats by the time you get it, which won't be until late game. And as an additional kick in the nuts, if you try to skip the quest and just enter the code so you can get the prize in the early-mid game when it would actually be useful you get a joke item instead that detriments you in the ways that the real one helps you.
