How many of you have played with the Mod of Balance?

I usually find the GBA version to be piss-easy, but this hack put the fear of G-d back into me.

>wander into Marsh cave at level 7 with a Paladin, Monk, Battlemage, and Sage

>by the time I make it to the second floor everyone's been poisoned or stunned at least once

>remedies cost 600 fucking gold back in town and I'm not going all the way to Pravoka for Mind Balms

>Sage is at half MP, only one that can heal

>get to the third floor, start looting

>random group of zombies manages to stun my entire team and kill them in 2 turns, except for the Paladin who dies in 4 turns

>reload and try again

>get poisoned literally 20 times before I make it to the boss

>Sage is out of MP and healing items

>Paladin eats a 100 damage hit from a piscodemon, his max HP is 230

>there are 3 of them

>get wiped

<reload and go actually prepare to play the game

It's got that sense of freedom that none of the other FFs even really tried to replicate. It's a shame, some of them would really lend themselves to nonlinear progression, given how complex character progression can get in the later ones. I always loved how you could use equipment to cast spells, they should have kept that as the series went on. The white mage is a man you fucking faggots.

It's a hack that rebalances the game, but also allows you to pick from 12 classes instead of 6. Each class was basically split into magic and physical-oriented versions of themselves that use the sprites of the upgraded classes. For example, a Battlemage is a Black Mage that can wear heavy armor and use swords and axes, but he's really slow and has lower HP, MP, and INT.

I've looked around, but I haven't found any. It's why I went with the GBA version again. There are a ton for the NES, though, if you want a different flavor.

>>16118991

It's pretty rough in the early game, especially if you're buying spells. Monsters drop way less money now, but the gil in chests were mostly unchanged. The shops were changed though, so as early as Elfheim you can buy some really good weapons and armor for tens of thousands of gil. There are some new spells as well, including some Monk/Master and Ninja ones. They're not too great, but they are fun.

I'm doing a full retard run right now with Warrior/Master/Rogue/Ninja. Nobody can heal and only the Ninja is really capable of casting offensive magic. The Master can buff himself and debuff enemies, though. His MP is pathetic, so he can't do it much.

I played FF2 with it. It was a great experience.

a0b500  No.16120656

I don't see the point of difficulty mods like this, JRPGs are more about stats than tactics so all you're doing is increasing the grind. There's challenge runs where you hack the game to get 0 XP but that's more about finding that an oversight the developers didn't notice, usually an item, spell, or ability that isn't dependent on your level, and abusing it all the way to the end with little variety.

I believe I have played a wonderswan port for j2me and I believe it was pretty balanced tbh. Don't see the need for any mod to fix the balance unless GBA version was casualized to the ground. From what you are describing it might be the case of what >>16120656 is describing.

>Because I've already beaten the game several times and I want something fresh?

Play another game then?

>Why are you questioning my intentions?

Because I don't see the point of beating the game several times, then go for a balance patch of a casualized port and then somehow make it the focal point of the thread, when in CY+deviation from CY not that many even played the game by itself.

And that's ignoring the fact that FF1 is basic and everyone who is into jrpgs has pretty much experienced most of it through other games, due to how everyone copied the formula since the game came out.

76eb4b  No.16123970

>>16123958

Then just let the thread die and don't post in it. You could try and branch out into other games in the series to maintain the conversation, or you could stop posting. It's a pretty natural progression of things.

Not really seeing how misdirected the OP post is and even then, the only other game in the series I've played is FF2 WS J2ME port and the game was steaming hot garbage, couldn't get past the initial third of the game.

>Battlemage

>Monk

>Priest

>Archmage

>Sage

>>16124066

FF1 is arguably the closest to a roleplaying game the series ever gets, since they immediately started taking away player agency in favor of more pre-determined characters, stories, and dialogue. FF1 is the only one in the series with any degree of nonlinearity, since you can go anywhere as soon as you beat the Lich. It's very worth diving into the later dungeons early on in order to pick up some choice gear, but the monsters are very likely to fuck you in the ass. It's more choice than you get in the rest of the series. The very beginning and the very end are fairly linear, though.

That's part of why I'm doing a no healing magic run. I had to beeline for the Priest Staff at level 17 so I could have the Ninja heal the party to save on all the potions I was spamming to get through dungeons. 99 potions was usually enough, though. The Citadel of Trials was so fucked that I had to port out as soon as I got the staff, I had to come back 5 levels later to get the rat tail.

I don't know any JRPGs I can do something similar in nowadays.

The general style of the remakes (dating all the way back to WSC) has problems, but more specifically Knight, White Wizard, and Black Wizard got screwed over the hardest. In NES FFI Knight looks like the pinnacle of a man, in the remakes he looks like a fag with a cape. The wizards in NES FFI both take off their hoods. The black wizard looks like a powerful evil sorcerer and the white wizard looks great too. These styles are just totally lost, the wizards just get fancier robes in the remakes and the black wizard's face is covered because no one dared to suggest they should go off of what had become the "brand" of the black mage.

I think the Master got shafted the hardest besides the Black Wizard. Just look at this shit, they took the Monk's shirt off, only to put it back on! But look at the NES Master, this Bruce Lee motherfucker knows he puts out the most damage in the game with those boulder arms of his, and then they make him go super saiyan? The slicked-back jacket look is weird, but I think it's far more tolerable than putting him in DBZ battle armor and spiking his fucking hair up.

66a1e7  No.16143906

>>16143859

Those new sprites for the iphone or whatever modern remakes are fucking atrocious. Never saw them for more than a couple glances before and I'd rather not see them ever again. Ignoring the more general changes to the advanced classes, I honestly like monk's redesign for WSC, even if it doesn't hit at the idea of "karate man" as well as before. Maybe it helps that GBA/PSP/etc have a much longer endgame that lets the stats of the Master actually get shown off since by the time Black Belt becomes better than Knight in NES you should be killing Chaos.

I've just about finished with his FF5 mod. It's a bit confusing. He claims that his mod makes passives carry over regardless of class, but only a few passives actually do.

I didn't find the random encounter rate was higher than vanilla, but you do get more xp since bosses actually yield a lot. 63 seems excessively overleveled though. Ability Point Bonus doesn't carry, Equip ribbon/sword/bow doesn't carry. I did master the relevant classes. Not sure about +30% hp/mp. Fortunately the thief and geomancer passives carry.
