As a fan of the original who played it on release i think it looks cute and charming and have no problem with the "we were into twin peaks at the time and wanted to experiment" zelda being experimental in some fashion, but boy is it funny to see millenials from the 'im such a nerd' crowd going "UHHHH WHY ARE THEIR CHOMPS AND GUMBOS IN ZELDA????"

The art style looks like it would fit better in the sequel to the zelda inspired game Tunic than an actual Zelda game. If it was a new Zelda game in the style, it would still be shit and I could ignore it, but it's a remake to a game I loved and somehow they sucked all the charm from the original even though it already had pre-established artwork for it they can work toward. Being dream like is a poor excuse since the twist at the end is that it was a dream so it ruins that revelation. Even given that everyone, even their grandma, knows that the game is a dream, the art style doesn't work unless they add in a secret Nintendo Power cover land and Nester is revealed to be a secret boss in the game. Even though this style obviously has a lot of technically power put into it, I'd prefer the windwaker celshaded style over this. This would work better within the Kirby and Yoshi games where a kiddy aesthetic would help it, rather than Zelda.

I've been waiting for this remake to show itself, and I'm glad it's going to the switch instead of the 3DS… so in that regard I'm pretty satisfied. Maybe it would have looked more like ALBW on that system, but I don't really have any problems with this style.
The only actual concern I have is if the soundtrack is mostly going to be flutes. I'd prefer some variety.

I originally played the original game on GameBoy. Back then the ingame-graphics had to be abstract and players filled in the gaps with their imagination. A big part of how the game would turn up in our heads was the artwork from the boxes and manuals. Take a look at the first two images, they convey adventure and mystery.
Now take a look at the third image, it's one of the ingame photo quests added in the GameBoy Color remake. It's fucking atrocious. WTF is this shit, even The Smurfs look more dignified. Link is a total pussy, he even looks like a Funko Pop decades before Funko Pops were even a thing. The remake looks like it follows the first remake rather than the original.

What is up with the Switch and shitty GameBoy remakes? The artstyle looks like a cross between the toy look of Pokemon Rumble U/those toy-based Gundam games and the clay look of games like Kirby's Rainbow Curse. Sad to think the next generation of kids will think of this dreamlike, but still melancholy game as mobile looking trash. Interesting it's being remade at all since modern Nintendo rarely allows first party crossovers anymore outside of Smash. Naw, they really had something that looked great with A Link Between Worlds and they should have gone that direction more. But honestly if they fixed the eyes, got rid of the blur (or toned it down), and stopped making everything look so plastic and fake it could be saved. That's how I took it (based off the DX version). If link got trapped in the dream, then it makes sense that other creatures would have as well, where they were transformed/reinterpreted in the dream world becoming much more than they were previously, with their physical bodies being in the same kind of mystical stasis as link.
The alternative is believe that all the characters weren't real, but one managed to pop into existence as a seagull, rather than as a human or some other more sensible form.

Why would anyone be mad about the ending? It's even more baffling than people being upset that "Mario 2 was just a dream waaaah stupid twist ending made everything pointless", where the game's entire premise was that Mario and friends had travelled to/were trying to save the land of dreams.
The ending of Link's Awakening has a similar nature. It isn't a dumb twist that comes out of left field at the last minute, you are explicitly told the true nature of Koholint before the halfway point, and the dungeon bosses keep taunting you that awakening the Wind Fish will destroy the world, including possibly yourself. It's not "Link is having a dream", it's "Link is trapped in the dream of a godlike entity and has to escape, but its a moral dilemma as this dream world contains sentient beings who think they are real, and you might be one of them." Link's actions absolutely did matter, as if he hadn't awakened the Wind Fish, he'd have been trapped in the dream world forever.
The ending actually plays with the concept, as it starts out with Link waking up floating by himself on an empty sea, leaving you to wonder if it really was just Link's own meaningless dream. Then the Wind Fish makes its dramatic entrance, showing that the dream WAS "real" and did matter. And then, beautifully, after the end credits, you hear the seagull cry (and, if you finished with zero deaths, see Marin fly by as you hear it).
Writing that ending off as "it was all just a dream and didn't mean anything" doesn't really jibe with what actually happened.

Just incase anyone actually doesn't get it, the use of dreams as a storytelling devise does not automatically make the story meaningless. Link has a goal in the game. Wake the Windfish to escape this illusionary island he finds himself trapped on. There are actually stakes here that matter. Link's inaction would have kept him trapped within the dream forever. It's not simply a case of Link dozing off and dreaming he had an adventure that wasn't real, and that he would have woken up from in time anyway.

I wish this had the same effort put into it as Let's Go. As much as a mistake as those games are, they atleast did a good job on the art style. A fully fleshed out modernized Link's Awakening has been my wet dream for years and I'm just not feeling the direction they went with the art. Game will probably still be good since the original is amazing, but it could've been so much more.

I think if they took that shiny effect off everything, and maybe applied some kind of filter the game would look a lot better. Another trick could be taking some frames out of animations, for a choppier look. Kirby did that to imitate old claymation, and it really works there.

It's generally true of any Nintendo game that has a separate European translation: the European version will have an accurate translation of what was actually said, and the American version will kind of translate the gist of the conversation, but the actual line-for-line text will be completely different and probably full of memes.

That looks like shit not just because it removes the cel shading, but because it leaves the specular lighting that's designed for the cel shading, so Link's hair and skin are plasticky. It would need to redo the specular map as well to remove the sheen from his hair and clothes especially.
