The game was completely broken though. In combat the targeting system is shit, combos never work since the enemy tends to block them everytime. The only viable strategies are shooting the face with a bow or spamming right mouse button (which is easy as fuck to do).

On top of that, animals are buggy as fuck, NPC's are buggy as fuck, the world seems oddly empty outside of major towns and the game has zero polish. It's like they just decided to stop development halfway through the game and release the alpha.

That's literally not even how combos work you dipshit, your opponent has to not block your initial strike before you can combo out of it. The entire combat system is waiting for your opponent to leave a particular guard open, then punishing them with a combo when they fail to block your first attack, which is surprisingly realistic in a tactical regard. It's a janky game but the combat is easily the best part. Only bad part is most of your opponents are shit tier babies and finding worthy opponents becomes harder which is also surprisingly realistic

Even then, if every single copy sold at a 50% discount, it would have still technically pulled a profit, but only technically.

Though the issue here whether the game pulled enough profit to keep a studio alive. A $10 million profit means they don't have the money to make another game that takes $36 million to develop. Though they would have hopefully been able to make future games cheaper due to their new-found experience, tools, and assets, there are a lot of factors that are unknown. If we had the data for what platform sold exactly how many copies and at what price, along with the same data for DLC, we'd be able to project how much profit they thought was too little to continue on with.

Seeking money from a publisher sounds exactly like the kind of action that would be taken by a studio who wants to make a game but feels they cannot fund it. They would otherwise have to seek a lender that would readily drop $30+ million dollars with a favorable agreement. The alternative situation would be that they were just done and wanted to cash out, and that Kingdom Come was their end game.
