Soldier 76 retconned into a cock squatter is not the reason why he's played less. He's currently the least rewarded hit scan and midrange character in the game. He's the easiest to use and has high uptime since he can heal himself, but compared to the rest of the cast, he's like chopping down a tree with an axe while every other character uses a chainsaw to accomplish the same job. Why would you pick soldier if you can aim decently with widow or hanzo or mcree or ashe? I would even take Mei over soldier as my right click can land consistently, I can self-heal, crowd control, and have more utility than soldier. Factor in the meta since the cum guzzle reveal occurred and you have the answer. I don't even pick soldier to counter phara or pharmacy. I just switch to zen or dva and pray to baby jesus that the shitters on my team can focus fire.

Blizzard has a lovely system as of late for making new heroes for the sake of countering other heroes. Which is awful. Don't get me wrong, there was always heroes to help counter other heroes in the beginning, but it was nearly has hard as it is now. Playing Reinhardt with an enemy Brigette is near impossible unless the person playing her is crap. There are many examples of that, which I think is a big part on what killed the game.
