Standards aren't bad. It's how lots of games aren't even capable of living up to said standards. Cover systems made sense with shit like Operation Winback where the controls were fairly clunky and needed to give the player a safe option, it doesn't make sense when we're in 2019 and 99.9% of third person shooters do nothing but hold on for dear life to their cover systems because they have nothing else interesting to offer.

It's less about the control scheme itself and more about the fact that the average fuckwad cannot be bothered to learn a new control scheme (I'd argue this is what really kept the majority of normalfags from playing video games for a long time) so all of the AAA games copy the controls so they can target the same audience. The biggest impact is obviously the FPS genre. Every FPS must now cater to a ridiculous indirect control scheme where a player controls their field of view by using a stick to tell the camera how fast to accelerate. That is totally asinine. There needs to be 1 to 1 input for that, be it a mouse or gyro. Gyro got very close with every console except Microkike adopting it, but none of the devs attempted to promote it at all even though it is objectively better, to the point of making specific games like RE4 way too easy. As usual, we suffer because only the largest market demographic is targeted.

This is true. You have a ton of casuals entering the market, as well as bunch of older gamers either giving up the hobby or just not having the time to invest in getting good anymore. So a standardized control scheme is ideal to appeal to both markets. On top of that, anything that isn't crammed full of microtransactions doesn't really care how much time you spend with it or whether or not you get good. They want a high turnover rate. Impulse buy, consume, buy next product, consume, and so on. Keep that cycle going. And even those which are crammed full of microtransactions are going to go with the standardized control schemes because everyone else is… if the deviate, they risk turning off the consumer before they have a chance to get invested and willing to buy XP boosts and lootboxes.
Games don't sell because they're good games anymore. They sell because they're just light entertainment to be experienced.
