What are some games with good end games?
I got to thinking with the new Civ 6 global warming DLC, which is an attempt to add in global warming as a final boss to the game. It's really bad because 90% of it is done through a "world congress" and only big bad meanie racist war mongering >:( countries are affected by pro-climate decrees, without it harming capitalist societies' ability to industrialize and modernize. Alpha Centarui did it well in this regard, where the one "sane"/capitalist and UN factions were the most adversely affected by climate change policies whereas the crazier cult/war factions either weren't affected or benefited, making the no climate change edicts a difficult decision even as society evolved away from fossil fuels and on-planet extraction.
Another example is Railroad Tycoon 3, which introduces recycling plants in the late game (1990s) which serve as free money generators when placed within cities, which begin producing "waste" in addition to demanding resources. It's a nice way of flipping everything on it's head, because a successful recycling plant can screw up existing industry chains by causing factories to accept materials from them instead of mines.
Simcity 4 also marginally deals with the issue in the form of landfills, but this is solved with either waste-to-energy incinerators or trucking it to a different city. I always thought it was funny how money and people could move across borders in Simcity but not pollution. Also Simcity 4 and Simcity 3000 both had hi-tech industry as the hardest to get development, with the latter having "'SimMars Research and Testing Facility" as one of the most difficult buildings to get (based upon it's minimum spawn requirements) which is obviously a reference to the unreleased simmars game (which itself says a lot I think lol).

Why would you buy Civ6 in the first place? They marketing machine was pumping their female developers and have such amazing and inspiring quotes in-game from lead female scientists like "There's no WiFi on top of Mt something." Funny though how they shoehorned global warming into a DLC.
There was a thread here on Alpha Centauri the other day. Great stuff. Making me want to play again. The concept of having to deal with a rising threat at end game is interesting, but depends on execution and amount of moral browbeating involved. Didn't Civ2 or Civ3 have pollution start forming around your cities until you could start building recycling plants and alternative energy plants? Hoover Dam such a great wonder.

other than that, the end game for Advance Wars 1 and 2 will always resonate with me, AW1 had a bullshit final boss that you're just meant to lose units to and AW2 throws literally everything it has at you and only by exploiting the AI's build priorities can you even attempt to beat it.

However, they're handled to so poorly (like the rest of the game) that it's a shame. I'm sure there's a mod to fix it out there, but fuck paradox.

Sword of the Stars has some very cool game ending events. The only problem is that they tend towards exactly that, ending the game with no survivors, although they are fun to fight. There's also an interstellar patrol force that appears maybe one time, and the moment they do everyone has to stop all warfare immediately or you get targeted by a fleet-sized UFO with top tier tech. Alexander the Great was heralded by the Egyptians for freeing them of Persian rule. Ptolemy was not Alexander the Great. The Egyptians celebrated Alexander, they staged numerous rebellions against the Ptolemaic infidels.
>Are you mentally defective?
They quite literally did. Where Alexander kept in line with Egyptian king worship, Ptolemy and his putrid spawn created false gods to forever immortalize themselves, rather than the spirit of the God King.
>implying Jews aren't inbreeders
Jews are the most inbred of all the races.

None of the natives enjoyed Ptolemaic rule, they were being replaced by foreigners from across the land, not just Greeks, but Persians, Hebrews, Italics and more. Their revolts were stamped out by the mercenaries, hired from across the known world to trample upon any sense of the Egyptian soul. These mercenaries included Hebrews. The Ptolemaic rulers saw the Egyptians and their ancient faith as curiosities, and kept them as we keep lapdogs today. Egypt under the Ptolemies was an enslaved whore, whose body was sold to all nations, whose children were.

They can all be taken out if you build proper ships and use proper tactics.
You don't really need endgame tech to beat them, but it helps. And it's not easy either.
For the system killer, DPS is all that mattters. Gather the biggest ships you can find with as many lances and torpedos. Interceptig it in space and damaging it to make the battle easier is also reccomneded. Humans have trouble doin that though.
For locusts, you want some hefty PD and group your ships.
Long-range weapons are always preferable. I personally spam photon torpedos. They might be dumbfire, but againt targets that big and slow they WILL hit, and they have a hulluva range.

As tempting as AI is, you can always choose to avoid that path. It is a high risk, high reward tech.
The system killer is also a pretty blatant reference or copy of a thing in the original Star Trek. I can't remember what it was called, but the design and general unknown weapon from some ancient war that destroys systems/planets was in Trek. It is also a bit painful to deal with as the Hivers because intercepting it in deep space never worked for me.
The main issue with them is that the tech/build vs counter-tech/build way combat works in SotS ends up fucking you in the ass if you are knee deep in a war producing ships to deal with, or follow, a specific strategy against an enemy empire and one of those assholes shows up and you need to start to switch up what you were doing to deal with that before things get out of hand. Locust in particular will cause huge issues if you let them grow out of hand because the fuckers don't leave.

If its just a single System Killer and not a Von Nuemann homeworld pumping them out, it will just carve a path through the map and then leave. If you are playing on the largest map settings possible, Locust and Von Nuemann homeworlds become very scary prospects, because the empires on the other side of the map could completely fuck up dealing with them. Locust at least move pretty slowly, but iirc, Von Nuemann can attack anywhere any time, so you might be feeding their production lines every time you fail to fend them off.
