Word of mouth is extremely strong and has an extremely large range this day and era.

People tend to talk about things they think other people don't know about, sharing it on social media, paradoxically making it more known.

10,000,000 players in less than a month. Zero trailers or journalist coverage before hand; just vague murmurs about Titanfall 3.

By circumventing the conventional means of marketing Apex Legends might have just stumbled into the next evolution of marketing.

For example: If Apex had came out with the traditional market structure. (a big reveal, and a few months time before release.) Things would have gone very differently.

People would be saying to each other:

>Oh, that game is by EA.

>That game has micro-transactions.

>That game doesn't have the things Titanfall had.

>It's just another Battle Royale.

>/v/ would be complaining about the pozz.

>Everyone would find something to hate.

It's clear that the industry is full of scams, exploitation, and fraud these days and most people know it.

Even on /v/, anons spend half of their threads talking about the "meta" of the industry, rather than the games themselves. (Thus the phrase "/v/ doesn't talk about video games")

The sheer amount of money and technology being thrown into the industry has grown so large that consumers have become hyper-aware of what goes on in the industry.

Even on the normalfag level.

So what Respawn has decided to do is not given consumers time to reflect on the game. I'm pretty sure that this was Respawn's call and not EA's. The Titanfall fandom is completely heart-broken right now, and Respawn knew that they would be very vocally displeased with Apex. This is also why i think the leak was a real leak because the devs knew that "Titanfall BattleRoyale" was the last thing TF players were wanting to hear. The leak only came out 2 days before and referred to a "Titanfall" BR which Respawn didn't want.

What was instead give time to form was:

A) Gameplay and polish (Respawn is very good at what they do and didn't sit on their ass after Titanfall 2)

B) They gave streamers early access

B is very important for the following reasons.

1.) It allows devs to soft-release and tweak the game in a controlled manner. Catering to the wants of streamers.

2.) It gives streamers the ability to gain an advantage over their peers by being able to practice the game before hand.

In Apex Legends streamers like Shroud were give over a month to play the game beforehand.

What this does is essentially give streamers the power of, critic, salesman, and gatekeeper all in one. A symbiotic relationship between influencer and corporation.

So now Streamers, acting as patient zero for a games exposure, have become the new way to debut a game.

The losers in this new era of marketing.

1. Tradition ad makers, they of course become less important.

2. Journalists lose out big time, with Streamers taking full control of the cultural zeitgeist.

3. Consumers. Consumers always lose when it comes to marketing.

The spreadsheet showing the differences between the marketing budget of Anthem and Apex Legends must be staggering.

In the coming days, if this formula is repeated and shown to have success, it could become the new "experimental" standard.

Why give consumers the time to reflect on a game flaws when it's almost guaranteed that those flaws will go viral?

This is not to say the Apex's success is entirely unearned. Respawn are known for being very good at crafting fun FPS games.

But either way, Marketing has changed.

R.I.P Titanfall 2 my favorite FPS game :`(

Reminds me of Logan Paul wanting to make a start up company where he manufactures "YouTube friends" by investing in the talent. Like how Disney grooms child actors and musicians instead of finds them. Streamers will be no different. As of right now streamers are mostly honest. However the moment money starts pouring in to mask shills as genuine streamers just like how, MCNs manufacture vloggers instead of finding talent, people will start to distrust streamers. When that happens and no word of mouth can be trusted by any source expect who knows where you can go for genuine opinion.

>anons spend half of their threads talking about the "meta" of the industry

Ironically I don't think it is meta enough, and that's why there are so many threads about it. Apply some critical theory; the "games industry" is just one facet of a condition, that's why indie developers and triple A's do the exact same things. It isn't economics, it's the cultural zeitgeist, and streamers don't "control" it, though I don't think OP meant that literally either.

It's the post-modern condition we live in: simulacra, copies without originals; signs and signifiers in constant confusion; and collapse of all historical metanarratives. If we consider things like SJW writing (a la the cast of Apex Legends) to be an aspect of the liberal progressive agenda, it becomes even more apparent. The last real historical metanarrative to collapse was the American spread of mixed-economy democracies to the third world, which never once succeeded in spite of, or because of, numerous armed conflicts over its course. The progressive movement is a retreat inwards which banalizes otherwise hostile/incompatible "agendas" like Middle Eastern cultures to instead focus on "internal reform" in first world countries that don't need it but are more accepting of it.

Current industry practices are an inward focus on hard-R gamers who don't need/really care about social justice, microtransactions, new hardware etc. (given that they are just as satisfied with Call of Duty in 2018 as they were in 2008), but are more accepting of it anyway. This partly delves into the condition of simulacra as for most people playing games now, there is no "original" state of video games, only the one they were born into, and so differences in kind are intangible. For those of us (I say us because I mean me) who were in large part socialized through games (Everquest groups, TF2 servers, forums, etc.) the difference is MUCH more tangible.

Even here on 8chan there are viral marketing shills that want to make datamining threads. It's gotten so bad that sometimes it's hard to separate genuine praise from shill posting. The only genuine topics to discuss is hard criticism of games. And hey that's why I come here.

Journos are nuking comment sections. YouTube is censoring comments and dislikes. Epic Games has a shitty review section that no player who bought the game can leave feedback on. When all positive feedback is shilling while negative feedback is censored then you can bet the conversation here will be negative sided. This is literally the last place players have to vent their frustrations with video games and the industry as a whole.

This is exactly what i was thinking. I was going to include it in the OP but I couldn't find a place to write it down without messing with the flow.

Their is going to need to be a leak that completely exposes Youtubers and Streamers in the future.

It's going to be much harder though, unlike journo's they usually have control over there communities.

e.g twitch has good goy subscriber chat + mods, and youtube gives youtuber's the ability to delete comments.

I don't know what they equivalent of the Zoey Quinn leaks will be, but it will have to be big and probably won't happen in our life times.

The Quinn leaks happened because Game journo's were a small tight nit group of faggots. E-influencers are to large and varied to be taken down at once like that.

Things in the industry will need to homogenize, with "problematic" streamers and tubers getting pushed out, before any real damage can be done to them by the infamous gamer gaytors.

Marketing used to be honest about being obvious marketers. I learned in marketing classes that this is the best approach to marketing due to the honest you bring to the customer you're trying to sell too. However marketing has become more deceptive and predatory. Marketers learned in the 80's that if they can sell to the impressionable youth then they will have loyal customers for life.

Modern youth do not watch TV. They watch YouTube and live streams going to see their genuine honest content creator shitpost. Lately there's a trend of content creators that call their viewers friends rather than fans. The content creators that call their viewers friends are clickbaiting boobtubers paid by media to advertise and get ahead in the algorithms to stay on top. To a tween that wants to make friends for social capital they befriend these content creators by subscribing and buying their merch. Content creators that call subscribers friends don't care about entertaining you. They care about money. And if you want to be popular on YouTube and Twitch then you have to make the site views as well as be advertiser friendly. Gone are the days of viral video and word of mouth. It's about gaming the algorithm.

You don't post videos on YouTube to say what you want. Everything offends someone and it'll get you banned. Instead you only post videos on YouTube now to game the system and make money. Most of the rising YouTube stars are tame advertiser friendly channels with the exception of videos getting shared on chans before they're deleted. And the worst part is that these rising stars are not genuine individuals that are here to post vlogs about their life. They are groomed actors raised to be influencers disguised as people wanting to be your friend.

Ten years from now we will start seeing friendship services for those unable to make friends naturally due to everything being online. The algorithm will dictate which actors you will connect with based on your personal data. Whether these will be human or AI, I can't say. I can say these mega popular best friends in the app will be the Jones's in the trainer anon posted. People living the American dream because they are paid to sell it to you.

Wrong. If you think the bigger streamers will not make it fun for the big bucks you are nuts. The shitty AAA regains the payoff cycle. The only to fix all this is to spread the culture of no preorders and no politics.

379502  No.16104380

The future is all about the (((influencers))). They are all over social media and streams, often not even disclosing they were essentially paid for to promote a product. At least with streams you can mute the audio and just watch the gameplay to get a somewhat realistic idea of what a game is like (at least at that time before the game is patched 5436345 times). Not that you should actually watch any of those shills, but if you had to it would be better than a straight advertisement from the devs/pubs themselves or at something like E3, which is guaranteed to be nothing but lies.

>Apex is popular because word of mouth

The rest of your post is right, but it definitely did not get any natural buzz. EA has been running a nonstop ad blitz about it all weekend, it wouldn't surprise me if the marketing budget was roughly on par with other big releases. This was clearly a well-planned and organized release.

It's also worth noting that this only works for a FtP game. The entire hook is "check out this new game that big name streamers are playing, and it's FREE. just download now to join in the fun :^)" People don't tend to drop $60 on that kind of whim, and I think advertising a major release is still going to be the more successful approach for full price games.

I don't really think this is new. Skyrim, Minecraft, and League of Legends all did the same thing. Out of no where, pushed by streamers, shilled more on places like reddit than journalism sites. It wasn't until they caught on that the traditional media started talking about them.

This type of side stepping of game media has been happening for a while. I even think it has to do with why game "journalists" have been so hostile lately. They know they are going to be made obsolete in due time so they're trying to focus on issues that streamers won't cover, like social justice poz.

See Ghostbusters 2016 or Battlefield 5 it's the combination of factors that really kills things. so the real variable is whether or not Game Journo's will join in on "Exposing them" to keep their own jobs which will cause the inverse effect and make people defend them or call the attacks bigoted which inversely will only encourage people.

It's still good and the most played loadout.

>intentionally released at a tremendously bad time by EA to kill the game

circumstances of the launch don't relate to the game itself.

>p2w DLC weaponry

wrong.

If you had played the first game you would know that it had a retarded "burn card" system where each player would randomly draw cards that would completely break any sense of balance.

For example you get get a card were you would get a titan at the start of the match.

The only thing i can agree with is how poorly they handled the class system in Titanfall 2.

In the original game their were three classes that related to the size of the titans.

Ogre class being big tankers, Strider being a light weight mech, and Atlas being a meduim sized mech.

The classes in Titanfall 2 weren't really classes in the Overwatch sense but were handled more like subclasses of the original three.

The Ogre class originally had three subclasses:

Scorch, Legion, and Ramm/Bison. (Bison was cut from the game's developement and was originally supposed to be a heavy brawler.)

The Atlas class currently has three subclasses as well.

Ion, Tone, and Monarch.

Then we have the Strider subclasses:

Ronin, Northstar, and the supposed third Strider class. Most people speculate this is "Archon"

What I would have liked to see is groups of subclasses more clearly organized by weight class.

I'd also want many more options when in comes to the weaponry of the titans, having certain weapons shared across weight classes or multiple weapons for certain classes.

For example Scorch could have his projectile launcher, a big ass flame thrower, and a molten tar spitting gun. Then players could mix up the weapons they played with.

Titanfall 2's campaign knows that you are playing as a self insert dude with a giant robot chasing after a doomsday weapon mcguffin.

It's self-aware but doesn't waste time trying to correct itself with preachy bullshit justifications of whats going on in the game.

Instead of wasting your time with bullshit nonsense it gets strait into the action with very creative level design and a genuine fellowship between BT and cooper gets formed in the process.

I guess Pacific Rim is actually worse than i thought thinking back on it. Considering it had a long ass 30min exposition dump intro, and dumb "wacky ayylien science" bullshit.

It never clicked with me why /v/ likes so much the Titanfall 2 sp campaign. I, too, found it extremely mediocre, generic and forgettable. It wasn't horrible, just mediocre. If there's one good thing to say about the campaign would be that at least it's not pozzed, at least I don't remember or noticed anything of the sort.

Still, for a board that boasts so much about having higher standards and hating on modern gaming, the love for a campaign that had most if not all tropes from 7th / 8th gen dudebro shooters, sure is weird.

I thought maybe nowadays a more honest discussion about it could be had, because soon after the game came out and I've played it, when discussing the campaign on /v/ back then I was under the impression I was arguing with paid shills, but nowadays I see they were probably doing it for free. It's one of these things I'll never understand.

>muh self-awareness

b0dde1  No.16108697

I don't see it as a total loss for the consumers, only retards buy games at launch and suffer from potentially throwing money at a game that turns out shit.

Whilst streamers are easily influenced by dangling some money in front of them and are willing to be a bit less critical so that they in the future continue to get special early access, they're harder to influence this way than journalists. People writing for a company are beholden to their employers which have the final say, streamers market their personality and face more than most journalists who mostly blend into the publisher they write for, which puts a larger focus on said streamers to keep up an image of being fair and trustworthy when it comes to reviewing new games.

Lastly if game companies realize how much they can save on marketing we're either going to see more games come out (spread out the money to multiple projects) or a higher budget for the individual game(s), potentially increasing their quality. I'm sceptical towards the latter, I feel like companies would rather make a bunch of mediocre games and hope something sticks and a large budget doesn't mean the game will be better since most devs, especially in the AAA scene, are incompetent cucks.

It was largely elevated by the base gameplay and a gimmick being introduced and expounded open each level, like how the factory level is one giant toybox for the parkour system to shine by also giving you routes which can branch before converging much like a classic Sonic the Hedgehog level, and the time travel level about flipping between timelines was very well realized

But /v/ shills Titanfall 2 in general. For free.

>>16108891

>a gimmick being introduced and expounded open each level

You say that as if it's a good thing. If at least the gimmicks were original or done better than other games, but they weren't.

Titanfall 2 wasn't the first game to have parkour mechanics - OG Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia have it, and did it better - and it wasn't the first fps to have platforming segments, routes, nor did it better than older games, either. Time travel / time manipulation was much more interesting in games such as Timesplitters, Timeshift and Singularity, in all of them it felt less gimmicky than in Titanfall 2.

>It was largely elevated by the base gameplay

Which wasn't very good or appropriate for a single player campaign, though I suppose that could have been addressed with better level design and enemy placement.

You see, I know that's a subjective thing and perhaps it's just me, but one of the problems I had with the campaign, is that lots of times it gave me the feeling I was playing a multiplayer map with bots rather than a proper single player campaign. Maybe because the gameplay is often as >>16108879 said, go fast or die. I suppose BR kids enjoyed it.

If this is news to you then you are a casual gamer and you don't matter.

If you don't like apex then you are probably bad at the game.

I've been playing cod2, cod4, cs1.6, css, csgo.

I understand that most people here are casual console players or casual pc players whose closest thing to competitive games has been overwatch or rainbow siege or even csgo.

These 3 games are infamous for their matchmaking, they allow the players who are terrible at the game to get games with other people who are terrible and get a few wins regardless.

There isn't a better game than apex out right now where your reaction speed, accuracy and quick thinking actually matters. The game is good, because it's polished and well designed. You guys are either bad, bad losers or just contrarians.

Maybe the marketing is different, but it's extremely easy on the eyes and allows individual response with its long time to kill. When I was watching somebody play with the Wingman pistol, it plays very nearly like original Halo with legit improvements. I think they may have captured the old lightning like this, but I don't know how long it will last given its repetitiveness.

I can't imagine EA retained the staff to remake weapons and shit heroes, like mobas require, so my guess is they'll kill the game on first balance patch by nerfing the numbers on strong weapons and hero skills.

>we're all Shills of the EA now

Only if you play EA games.

Seeing Blizzard dying was great, Kinda shitty that Apex became popular and EA rising again.

EA has the sports fags though so it would never go broke sadly.

This is communist tier writing and if you are from around here and got carried away by emotion make sure to never write like that again

I have no obligation to like anything no matter if it's good or bad

It might be the best free battle royal out there I have no problem saying that and the rest of you niggers would be wise to recognize that I am saying it's the best BR out there not the best game out there before you come shouting at me, but it killed Titanfall 3 for the time being and 2 was fun .It's good in the terms of forcing other companies out of their monopolies and now they will either compete to make better products or more likely all get bought by Tencent and fake that they are competing,I wonder what will be Tencent's next move

Battleground's seem to be dead because the devs fucked up and outright stopped developing it,Ring of Elysium just lost it's ace up the sleeve of being a somewhat well made free battle royal that isn't Fortnite and Epic just got a competitor that might win on the fact alone that it isn't know for housing all people below the age of 15 and building. If EA want's their game to live a little longer they have to add options to stay with your squad for the next game or add them as friends after a match

If someone has info what's Tencent's buying power and if they can outright buy EA?

"We" might not like it but in the genre of BR right now EA is the only opposition to Tencent,Which basically means that Jews fight the Chinks or at least pretend like it

Then why hasn't Synthwave/NewRetroWave become mainstream yet?

Thousands of YouTube videos, resurgence of 80's music, but it's still kind of underground and most normalfag NPCs don't know about it.

>The worst part of it all is that when word of mouth becomes the most effective marketing this amplifies how much "ANY publicity is good publicity!" works in your favor, since this kind of publicity almost exclusively spreads through word of mouth and is pretty much the cheapest you can get. Publishers create problems and controversies ON PURPOSE just so that people talk about it. Anthem is the perfect example, their demo was so messy that all of Youtube talked about it. And this sort of shit happens all the time lately.

Not really. Mass Effect: Andromeda had amazing word of mouth but all the nonstop jokes and ridicule just destroyed sales. Even the journos felt compelled to give it lower review scores lest they become a laughing stock. Everyone who knew about Lawbreakers also knew not to touch it. Lawbreakers was a very well-known game that sold like absolute shit. "Any publicity is good publicity" is just not true.

In fact the entire problem AAA developers are facing is that "they'll buy what we see fit to give them" is starting to fail as a business model. Marketing is losing their hold.

Titanfall was never good. It was just a failed attempt to be the killer app that would have made the Xbox Done relevant.
