I mean it's wworth it because no emulation issues

You're better off with a hacked 3DS, that thing has the GBA hardware inside so you can inject GBA games on it and there'll be no difference from playing it on a actual GBA, you also get DS games if you buy a flashcart plus whatever emulators you want, the 3DS catalog isn't bad either, and you don't have to buy batteries for the 3DS.

>what hardware you have
>how tolerable you find using said hardware
>what you want to play
>how much money you are willing to spend
If you only want to play a handful of popular games but can't stand the shitty screens you're most likely better off just playing it via emulation on whatever device you're using to post here
If you want the best possible experience in every way then you're gonna have to look at getting yourself a NGC with the GB player accessory (using the GB interface software and not the default one) and a flashcart or whatever backlit handheld you prefer with native GBA compatibility and a flashcart.
If you want a nostalgia trip with your old GBA you just found then you're probably better off forgoing the flashcart and just find / buy the two or three game you feel nostalgic about.

If you want actual controls, accurate emulation, or easier link support, sure go for it. I use an EZ4 with my Lite for battery + better screen, and SP when I do Pokémon trades. I'd like a better flashcart but it's okay for most games.
Otherwise, the console emulates very well. Unless you're trying to link with Dolphin, you probably won't have issues emulating. (mGBA or VBA-m are the best emulators. Former for accuracy, latter for features but still fairly good emulation )

>Unlike other Virtual Console-branded releases, GBA games are not emulated, but rather they run directly on an ARM7TDMI processor core; the "AGB_FIRM" kernel running on the other CPUs is responsible for emulating the Game Pak, applying a video filter, and allowing the brightness to be adjusted or the game quit without manually rebooting the 3DS. Many save types supported by AGB_FIRM (many of them having been discovered in September 2017, after injection became convenient and accessible to most users of custom firmware) were not employed in the ten official GBA releases, but can be used by games unofficially "injected" into a GBA VC title.

I certainly am not saying there is not, none of them are perfect. I'm just stating which actual pieces of hardware are making it out of daily affairs. The DS Lite has a fantastic battery. It was stowed in storage for maybe five years. Popped right on. The only hinged device that has not failed. I'd prefer to not have to work on or buy a new shell. Unlike the GameBoy where it mostly comes down to replacing a screen, long as somebody didn't keep batteries in it forever.
