Can anyone recommend some games where alot of backstory is discovered through hidden notes you find, terminals or PDA's? The best example I can use is the System Shock games where you learn about the crew and the events that unfolded through found PDA's.
They don't necessarily have to be horror or mystery games. New or old, rpg, point and click, isometric etc.. I just want to immerse myself into a rich world of old journal entries and hidden backstories.

This is most games nowadays, but I'll cite Prey '17, Subnautica and Dishonored.

Horizon Butterface is AAAAAALL about finding notes that explain the backstory before the big exposition dump near the end.

Horizon looked like a game that had a lot of potential to be fun and an actual good game, but the ugly faces made me very distrusting of it doesn't really matter though since I don't own a PS4 anyways lmao

Two games which did it right (means, not force you to read them and actually hide them instead of force them into your face):
Wasteland 2 - every book/note is optional
Morrowind - besides book there are hidden corpses, journals, final notes in various places
Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2 - not just books/notes but dialogues with "easy to skip" npcs.
Done it bad:
Pillars of Eternity - fuck ton of text, bullshit infos (privilidge, gender, gamergate) and you will still not understand the abysmal bullshit whats they dare to call a "clever" story since key infos are missing.

I bought a used PS4 from a local game shop because I was fucking furious about bullshit at work (company zeroed my paid vacation time after telling me I had six months to use it up, and didn't pay me for it). My brother bought HZD for $12 on some kind of sale when I loaned him my system for about two years. The gameplay is pretty good, and the story itself is surprisingly interesting. There's no SJW horseshit in the game, and the explanation for the DUHVERSHITTY is made clear pretty early on. Without spoiling anything, I can tell you that in the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, the (((chosen ones))) are long-dead.

Deus Ex has a ton of background info from terminals and letters and shit that you can get into. Also, if you're interested in audio logs as well the first two Bioshock games are great; the writing is breddy gud and the voice acting is out-fucking-standing.

I've been meaning to play this for a long time. I've never played Wasteland 1 though and I like to start franchises at the beginning if possible.
I know Morrowind like the back of my hand, i've probably sunk more hours into that and Oblivion than any other game. Finding notes and journals in abandoned cottages is exactly the feeling i'm after.

Mercifully, you don't deal with a whole lot of women or soymunculi in the game, as much as you interact primarily with gruff hunter types. The ultimate edition or whatever opens up a northern territory where Aloy bitches about it being cold. The game is easy to break over your knee if you pay attention to your skills. Hidden strikes, and being able to nock multiple arrows are key. Buying/trading for expensive weapons is well worth it, and powerful enemies drop extremely useful modifications for your weapons, which can be swapped mid-combat. If you can play it with minimal or no investment, give it a whirl. Still, the world interactivity is shit compared to Breath of the Wild, but at least your weapons don't break, or even lose their edge. I guess that I enjoyed it? It's hard to tell anymore. Everything is so dull and gray.
I haven't played many other Found Note games, and certainly not too many recent games. A bit of a narrow genre, to be sure.

Horizon Zero Dawn gets a really unfair shake. I do think it's the faces and diversity that made people think it was some sort of SJW circlejerk but it really isn't. The game is fun, especially on the hardest difficulty and with limited or no hud. You can customize each element of the hud for this exact purpose and it's brilliant. The enemy variety is great and engagements, especially early on, feel tense. For a console game, it looks good too. It's impossible to talk about it here because everyone just assumes it's a pile of shit. I recommend it if you ever snag yourself a PS4, along with Bloodborne, obviously. It's always on sale, so you can get the complete version for like $12 or less. It's a good 30-40 hours of content.

well I didn't mean to an excessive degree. I don't think the System Shock PDA's were excessive, do you? Another good example is the random finds in Fallout like the bomb shelter with a skeleton and an audio tape. So not necessarily to advance the story but a little peace of lore to reward exploration.

It's not the faces that ruin it, it's the sheer amount of crafting/side content/fetching, it's like they were trying to do every other open world shitter with the collectables, it's completely cluttered and takes a damn lot of fun out of the game. I didn't buy it, I didn't finish it.

There are no other humans in Subnautica so basically everything is told to you through messages left behind before the crash. Some give some interesting backstory on what the world is like in that universe while others will just detail the last moments of whoever left it behind.

nearly the entire story of phantasy star online is told in found message capsules. most of the messages are not hidden but the deeper lore is hidden behind certain quest lines. there is a hidden flowen message capsule in the episode 1 quest "the retired hunter" that kinda teases episode 2. the soul of steel quest has a hidden alternate ending. and the seat of the heart quest has a full hidden scenario. hidden messages can be found in each. finally in pso episode 3 the title screen has some scrolling text written in that alien looking pso font that when translated actually reveals the final message from principal tyrell (your boss in episode 1) and how he dies.

Not it isn't. A woman and a multi-ethnic team of people helped build the machines and systems that ended up fucking over the human race, then they all had to scramble to build a system that would be able to restart the human race after its inevitable extinction. Ted Faro tried to prevent the next generation of mankind from making the exact same mistakes as the previous generation. He's the chaotic good of the story
