Sounds like you've been reading mostly nukige. The writing and characters in those tend to be forgettable because they're only there as the barest framework to build sex scenes around. It's a real shame because writing is the only advantage VNs have over other mediums but 99% of nukige do not take advantage of this and as a result make for a less good fap than just reading a doujin.

Sekai killed it with their agressive licence acquisition. People don't want to start translating something for fear of C&D or it being picked up for an official translation. By genres I mean things like nukige (tons of sex scenes), moege (cute girls doing cute things), nakige (emotionally touching VN), utsuge (heavily depressing VNs), and charage (moege with character development). An erotic VN is simply one with sexual themes sometime down the story. Most outside of nukige only have several over the span of 30+ hours of content. Usually they're at the end of a girl's route.
Saya no Uta, Kara no Shoujo, and Tsukihime are all adult VNs with great stories. They should be on the VN starter kit in the OP. If not, then you can most likely find it on Sukebei Nyaa.si/pantsu.

People don't really care how accurate/good it is as long as they can read it. But they don't want to use a machine translation or script because it's not convenient. What astounds me is not people simply buying their games on Steam/Denpasoft but funding their Kickstarters. After getting kicked in the dick after 20 kickstarters, people still support them and even make comments in the comments section saying they're worried about how Sekai will handle the project. It's like not giving them money never actually became a thought to these people. Sekai has more than 35 unfinished projects. This isn't even counting all the physical versions and ports they are late on sending out every time. Yet people still give them money.

You'll need both to hook and translate the game.
Start up ITH first and then TA. Then start up the visual novel. In ITH look for the game's exe and accept it. The in-game text (Japanese) should show up after clicking on the game itself to progress the text, and if it doesn't then open the little bar on ITH and scroll down until the text appears legible. In TA you'll want to choose Google for the translator and keep connected to the internet to work.

RNG level ups is horrid in earlier games but shouldn't be a problem in any game past 6. You don't have to restart unless your lords or a story vital character dies early on. Many of the games can be beaten with story characters only for endgame if you know what you're doing. But you're right on the stories being average at best. I would put Front Mission, Utawarerumono, and Front Mission above Fire Emblem. But Radiant Dawn is still a great game in my eyes.

Zero, the real Zero mastermind of the franchise, is an old man with Alucard glasses who for the entirety of that game was just off-camera. Atelier is mainly RPG/alchemy simulator. Scenes are short and not that critical to progress. They're not exactly ADV style since your MC appears as third-person, it's not from a POV.
There are two particular 'side series' of Atelier that you might want to check out:
On the heavier gameplay side you have Mana Khemia. They're technically part of the "project A(x)" series of Ateliers. It's basically school life alchemy simulator with one of the best turn based battle systems. Both are on PS2.
Then on the heavier VN side you have Ar Tonelico. A 'side' series conceptualized by the composer in the Atelier series - Akira Tsuchiya. The madman even made a whole constructed language for it: Hymnos.
1 is mainly turn based, 2 has some real-time elements but it's still turn based.
Anyway, the heavy VN elements are present in the 'Cosmospheres', which are short (but multiple available) sections where you dive into your companion's 'minds'. The Cosmospheres are exactly what warrant Ar Tonelico's entries in vndb.org.

Forgot to mention something about Sol Press and how they've been handling Kickstarter projects. They have a few VN projects under their belt and have managed to finish two which were Sakura Sakura and Newton and the Apple Tree. Sakura met many delays but turned out well while Apple also had a few but turned out fine too. They censored the game for a Steam released but proceeded to release 2 patches. One for the ecchi jokes that made it mature and another that added that in along with the R18 material. Outside of delays, both projects turned out well. Meanwhile Yotsunoha is constantly being delayed because the studio handling it went bankrupt and they had to get another team to translate it so it's in development hell. Just keep in mind it's a long game. I mean looong. I had it on my old hard drive, so it's gone for me now, but depending on the setup a single map can take an hour or longer, and if you're not rushing through content, it will feel like the game never fucking ends. You think you see a twinkle of plot resolution for something in the distance, and then it opens up a whole nother fucking arc.

The lewd certain-girl-only outfits are hard to miss, but if memory serves, you need to unlock or craft them using specific amounts of materials that require several maps to obtain. The outfits shouldn't be difficult to "uncover" as in find/unlock whatever, it just might be tough to craft.
If you only started the game today or yesterday, I don't expect you're going to be getting around to accomplishing that until tomorrow at least.

Something like that. I'll give a few examples. Fruit of Grisaia, the first VN in a set of 3 is $40, it's 50 hours long, feature 5 different routes and a common path so a lot of work went into it. It's a good seller.
Kindred Spirits, a niche yuri VN is smaller in size but they spent a bit of resources getting the license and voice acting for it, so it's at $45, not going to make much back so they'll price it up when the original was $30 I think.
Something like Wolf Tails is $10 because it's only a few hours long and Demon Master Chris is an RPG and is sold for $15 which is a fair price I think.
So yeah, they're usually priced on length + if they're niche or mainstream. You can always pirate of course.
Couple of more things:
VNDB is your friend, has every title ever made, including western ones.
You can go into one blind but if you get say Euphoria and don't read the tags associated, you'll get poop. Read tags and you won't get burned.
Find what you like, I'm not much into horror but love good character stories like Majikoi.
Some VNs have had anime adeptations, usually the VN is superior.

During your journey you find out all the girls are used goods that the counselor had raped repeatedly and schemed to get sent to his camp for some more raping (the protagonist getting there being an unforeseen complication to his plan). One of the girls was actually turned into a drug addict and the resident school whore by him.
At one point you all get catapulted by a serial killer and taken to his rape dungeon, where he proceeds to fuck the school whore while the protagonist is chained to the wall (she does this to buy time for them to escape), and the protagonist finds another girl he met during a cave-in in there as well, and she too had been raped for weeks.

It's a VN mixed with a town building/tower defense game, and if you lose a particular battle, the game goes from the white (vanilla) route to the black route. This route basically has the MC becoming Hitler. It includes drugging, rape, gang bangs, and the MC mentally abusing and pimping out women who were like sisters to him in the white route. The girls are surprisingly well written, so be prepared to have your heart break when you see the things the MC puts them through considering what they had already gone though after losing the battle.
Another interesting thing about Make Me Lover is that it features a waifu creator that lets you choose what the main girl looks like. Every porn game should have this option as there's nothing more fappable than a girl made to your specifications.

You get to engage in all kinds of erotic and spicy plays with your harem of 100% loyal onaho toilets. I like how they do alot of extreme stuff while still keeping a bright and light-hearted tone in the game, something that Miel's pretty good at.
If you like raunchy and extreme stuff but also like games that aren't too dark or if you have a lot of niche fetishes like me then this might be a game for you, or if you simply just want something quick and dirty to fap to.

All the heroines get pretty much equal screen time, I think Risette, Giselle and Suzuka "himecut" get most scenes by a slight margin.
