They had one of the employees that worked on the game say on a Russian forum that if you don't support the PC version, they will not make future Metro games for it. Pretty much a threat if you boycott PC. He also says that the controversy was made up by people that weren't interested in the game in the first place. Unless they reveal the numbers of how many pre-ordered it on Steam are lower than what is on Epic, I'm going to call bullshit on that.

Also, if you think this was THQ Nordics Idea, it was addressed that it was Koch Media and 4A's decision. THQ Nordic just approves of their decision is all, forgetting that the problem is the timing rather than the store it's exclusively on. If they did like Ubisoft and gave ample time to say they were exclusively on epic by 2-3 months instead of less than a month away with a huge steam pre-orde time, they wouldn't get the flak they deserve. Gamespot also forgets to mention this little detail.

Had the game been announced to be an Epic exclusive from the get-go people would've been mad sure, but it wouldn't had lasted more than month but announcing bait and switch just a couple of weeks before release and adding Denuvo on top of it? I have my issues with Steam but I can't deny its existence and strength as a platform has paved the wave for the resurgence of PC gaming in the last decade not to mention the convenience of having a million places where to get keys for cheap, game trading, etc. Despite that I installed the Epic launcher back when Epic made the announcement of their revenue share, what a mistake that was, shit is barebones as fuck like Steam circa 2004 and it installed fucking Fornite on my PC… I even took a look at their EULA, which is basically tells you the launcher is spyware plus they can own and monetize pretty much any derivative content you make out of their games.
This shitshow is the fault of Deep Silver and Epic but some of it can be blamed on Valve for resting on their laurels thinking they can still get away taking 30% out of anything sold on Steam and pretending devs wouldn't mind and thinking Epic wasn't going to play hard, especially when owned by Tencent.

The marketing dept will look good on the annual reports every year, it the company is doing well that is, and thusly it is this dept that gets the majority of promotions to upper lvl management. Before long the upper lvl managers are all people like Todd, salesmen who don't understand the product, nor how to develop a good or great product.

I'm older than most zoomers here and I wouldn't mind if a game didn't use anything at all.
I remember when I used to download patches from fileplanet and gamershell and I didn't

But having something that's stood the test of time and proved to be a decent platform
to host the game-files for many years is great.
The worst part about not using steam would be getting the game files,
I don't even have a DVD reader anymore and DVDs get lost and also cost
money to print/burn.
If every game tried to host their own files, they'd run into bandwidth limits
and wouldn't be able to support downloads for years after the game releases.
Steam is great because they already have the infrastructure in place to support millions
of users, but even after all these years, sometimes there are still slight issues of servers
going down or being overloaded.
Why/How would Fortnite Games Store know how to deal with these issues any better or have
less of them?
They should just keep doing what they're good at, because if they keep this up, they might
have the same fate as valve, they made great games at one time, but now they just make
a platform for games and terrible games which flop.

Half Life 2 was the first case of online client DRM for a single player game even if you bought it physically, you still had to keep the disc in the drive even after authorizing it on Steam. It was the original Steam code in a box. Oh you bought a physical copy thinking it was an actual physical copy? Nope, you get a Steam code in a box!
Anyone who has given money to Valve has no right to complain since they voted with their wallets for the developers to be able to get as much profit as possible, even at the expense of the quality of their games and the industry as a whole.
You used to be able to just buy a game, and when I say buy I mean actually buy an actual copy and play without having to have an official account or client which changed when Steam was accepted.
This is actually a perfect time to start demanding games get proper physical releases on PC again whether it be on DVD, blu-ray, or flash drive, proper physical release which means the entire game is on disc/flash drive and doesn't require Steam or some other digital distribution "service", but everyone is too concerned about lord gaben not getting as many shekels. Neither do I, I have a blu-ray drive. They could always put the game on flash drive, in fact I have a few official physical copies that came on flash drive instead of disc, I prefer disc though. PC gamers are supposed to be enthusiasts which is why I find it odd how just the thought of physical copies trigger most of them so much. M-disc blu-rays and DVDs are currently the best media for long term backup when it comes longevity, even beats tape, even regular blu-rays do though. Hard to find a case with even 1 external 5.25 bay these days. Streaming companies such as Netflix' "4k UHD" have the fraction of the bitrate of a regular blu-ray, let alone a 4k UHD blu-ray

China Game's platform is horrible, but I think that if they can get people to leave steam for any reason, those people will be more flexible in the future should a better platform come around. I'm not really sure how GOG's few online games work but I imagine they use stronger authentication than that at least.
