The new game is literally like an underwater minecraft Challenge but you have to be a sassy nigger bitch. Original map was brilliant and rewarded exploration, the new map has about 100 openings down and they all go to the same places. I played the game when it released (after early access ended). Never touched it during early access, never really played any of the later patches either.

The Leviathans are/were too passive. None of them even kill your Seamoth in one attack, and they take 30+ seconds between attacks so you are never in any real danger. The Sea Dragons in particular are so ineffectual you can just swim right up to them unprotected and they won't do shit.

As for the other (non leviathan) creatures, only the sand sharks are really threatening, and mostly because there are so many of them. Warpers are annoying, but mostly harmless.

I tried the base game a few weeks ago, and I don't see any reason to bother with the expansion. It was buggy as fuck, made my computer run harder than even Kingdom Come:D for some reason, and was boring as fuck with an MMO-like grind where you're constantly on a treadmill of exploring increasingly remote (and unmarked) locations to get menial resources from caves to make recipes that let you go further to more remote locations to get even more menial resources. At least I hear the game has an end-state goal you're trying to reach - but so does Dragon Quest Builders, and at least in that game you actually had a narrative to follow and clear progression that you can either follow along with or ignore until you finish decorating your mud fort and making swasticas with torches so that your declaration of the 4th Reich can be seen from space.

The mutt protag in the base game at least had forgivable origins. In the typical leftist cuck manner, the devs wanted to make a character which had some resemblance to all races. Now, it should be obvious that any attempt to do that will always end up with an ugly mutt, but they tried despite that. It wasn't just overtly pushing a "diversity" narrative, it was about making as many players feel welcome as they could. With that in mind, I at least appreciate that the character, in some horribly warped and distant ways, can somewhat begin to approach what my race looks like. Even though the character looks like a quadroon spic, I can at least see that somewhere (far) down the line, that spic thing had white ancestors. Considering he doesn't look fully black, or fully arab, or fully chink, no one can really say "this character panders to just me." If spics want to claim him, it's because they're a mutt race that looks like something went wrong with one of the real races.

Now, the negress in the expansion. Gone are any and all attempts at trying to relate to the broadest audience. I can't see any of my features, even in any vague manner, in a black womyn. Even if a spic is super dark (for a spic), they can't either. All flavors of asian bear no resemblance. This is a character for blacks, so let's think about how effective that is.

Black men clearly don't give a fuck if the character is white. They go ape mode over DBZ and the characters in that become aryan when they get stronger.

The best part of Subnautica wasn't even part of the game, just fear of the unknown (if you're the kind of person that works for). That all falls apart once you realize that your imagination is leagues above what the game actually throws at you. The gameplay mechanics weren't all that well thought out, and base building and resource management is tedious at best, but making shit can be fun in a very basic way.

This expansion just proves that they had no idea what they were doing in the first place, considering they improved on nothing and just made the bits that kind of worked even worse. I somehow doubt it will get better in any meaningful way in time. I imagine it will just end up being a worse Subnautica, which is unfortunate, because a better Subnautica would have been nice.

I had a suspicion of how this would go down before the EA drop, so I kept my eye on it. The day it dropped on Steam and discussions were awash in people asking the devs what the fuck they were smoking. One of the developers commented in one of the threads saying "we wanted to make a far more character-driven story and bring emotional weight to what's happening in the world, and we found the best way to do that was by having voiced characters interacting," or something to that effect. Half the replies were "this is not what I wanted." And that's to say nothing of the shitstorms raging about the forced diversity bit.

To make matters "worse," I played the game a bit (no, I did not fucking buy it). I wanted to fall asleep at the wheel. It's almost literally a copy of Subnautica's assets (like, 90% of them), with small new coats of paint slapped on here and there (arctic peepers, different colored creepvine, etc). There's absolutely zero point in playing it, you'd get far more enjoyment and fulfillment replaying the first game, and that's saying a lot.

Because the developer actions aren't equivalent.
