As I've gotten older and taken on more and more responsibilities, I have slowly come to the realization that I'm not going to have the time for video games that I once did.
That said, I've started to get into more platforming titles and other single-player games that don't require hundreds of hours of grinding. Its kind of freeing to be honest. I can actually have fun while playing and not have it feel like a chore.
Anyone else go this route? If so, did it feel a lot like a detox?

I'd tell you to stop playing grindy rpgs, but the bad news is that rpg elements and grinding have spread to every other genre in gaming. It's now a cheap way that modern games use to the bloat the number of hours it takes to see their end credits.
Your pic's filename implies you own a Switch and like 2D games. Consider playing Shantae and the Pirate's Curse next.

Never understood how anycone can not have time for their hobby. You have 24 hours in a day. Unless you're pulling 16 hour shifts 7 days a week and spend every second of your freetime next to your gf/wife or kids, I just can't fucking understand it. Especially when games these days autosave basically all the time and old games can just be emulated and savestates used; so you can pick up and go and then stop abruptly and lose absolutely no progress.

You just have to be okay with spending a long time on one game. It's still fun if you keep in the right mindset and occasionally take a break to play a bit of another game before returning to your long one.

Arcade games were always my calling, so I guess I'm the opposite of OP these days. It's nice to play a game with a convoluted control scheme or deep systems. I started playing Strike Force Centauri the other day and the control scheme takes up half the keyboard, made me feel like I was piloting a proper mechanized suit. I would never waste my time on something like a JRPG though.

I used to play lots of RTS but recently started to gravitate back to turn based war games and even board games like chess .
Online multiplayer is just too draining under energy and time constraint I am under right now and I already milked out single player campaign of most franchise to its limit.
Slow paced turn based strategy games are so comfy as it brings my childhood memories and also function as something like good book that I can stop and return anytime I want without slightest feeling of obligation which can be quite liberating.

Challenging as in you actually have to think and react. You are likely going to die at least once to half of them. You can't sit there and face tank them. It isn't difficult it is challenging and forces you to learn the movesets. None of the early bosses are though so don't go talking about the challenge of a game you haven't completed. I actually went a different route. When I was a shitty highschooler, I was tryhard supreme. Quake, UT, Starcraft etc. - my sole motivation was to wreck others and have a shitty attitude about it.
Now, I recoil at the thought of playing shit online unless it's strictly online co-op. Co-op is a huge factor for me these days, and I can't get enough of it. There's something infinitely more appealing about playing with bros (but never hoes), instead of wrecking some 12-year-old assfuck who is out-aged by fucking World of Warcraft.
I can appreciate simplicity in games, especially where a good platformer is concerned. My real big thing has become zen garden types of games, like Planet Coaster, House Flipper, The Sims, etc. - games where I can build and design these little cozy environments and see how this little world responds to them.

Modern games feel more like movies to me than anything else, the lack of challenge results in me becoming bored very fast. I've been playing much older games from the SNES/Genesis era and having a blast. They're much shorter so it isn't a huge investment to get into them and their short length results in no filler whatsoever, just excellent gameplay from start to finish. Modern games seem more concerned with quantity over quality which is completely backwards, trying to fool people into thinking they're getting more value simply by cramming it full of useless excess stuff.

I've been playing games like this not because my time is limited, but because games made by bigger studios these days are so mediocre at best and awful at worst. They all got this profit over creativity mindset and it's very clear. I mean, these kind of small game devs obviously want profit too and need it, but I feel they at least try to balance the two and they never let the want for profits hinder their creativity

168 hours in a week:
>subtract 40 Hours for a 9-5 job on weekdays (implying most people don't work more)
>subtract at least 30 minutes a weekday for travel to & from work if not more (2.5 hours)
>subtract another 56 hours for sleep (if not more since most people doze when half asleep)
>if you have kids they likely eat up at least 2 hours a day between meal preparation, driving them around, etc (very likely more if they're a baby, etc)
>toilet, shaving, etc, maybe 30 minutes a day
>those times when you just sit down for a while and rest, probably another 30 minutes a day at least
Leaving you with about 48 hours of potential free time a week, which is left to:
>engage in any other hobbies which are likely more rewarding
>do general housework+DIY
>get sent on shopping trips (an incredibly effective way to burn free time)
>get interrupted incessantly for small things by the kids/wife
The last one in particular can make playing games less appealing, or at least make you less likely to play for a significant length of time, since your "gaming inertia" is removed so you're more likely to just throw in the towel and do something else. Overall unless you're a neet the amount of free time you have if you're a parent doesn't drop significantly (maybe 20 hours or so) but you're much more likely to have other things invade your free time. And even then this is with conservative estimates for work hours and time taken for round trip to work (15 minutes both ways is pretty much best case scenario).

Sure, I've become allergic to games that waste your time with shit that's either not enjoyable or just repetetive grinding. Playing something short and sweet like a shooter or even an on rails shooter like Blue Estate or House of the Dead in an evening or two is far superior to the 900 hour shitfests that they sell to kids these days. Most games seem to be focused on adding a bigger number of hours on the back of the box these days though, so many times I stick to older games, especially when it comes to platformers.

oh fuck off
it's extremely simple: japan is small and dense with huge urban centers packed full of people who are within walking or short train ride distance to to one of a relatively small number of arcades. japanese people walk around a LOT, you have so much more foot traffic and so small shops and things like arcades can thrive because it's POSSIBLE for a person to stop and step into your place, buy a couple things or play a few games, and then move on
by contrast the USA is the exact opposite: we are a huge country with more people spread out across a much larger area. even in the urban centers we do have (which are sprawling and still not very dense compared to japan's) we lack public transportation almost entirely–nevermind that what we do have is clogged up by niggers who will kill you for your payless shoes. because of that, everyone drives everywhere and it's inconvenient to pull over and stop at a shop or arcade on your way to another place, so nobody does. this is why the USA is consolidating all brick and mortar retail into walmarts, because it's simply more convenient to drive from A to B to A instead of hitting several smaller shops, or walking around inside a shopping mall
arcade machines are big and expensive, so it's a pain to ship them across the whole country, and plus, nigger and wigger kids just break everything they see in their environment while japanese are generally more respectful of their living space.
all these factors combine to explain why arcades died in the US and carried on in japan, not DA JOOZ!!! you absolute fucking mongoloid
