I'm playing the penumbra series, and holy shit, why is it anyone likes it? I'm currently on black plague and I'm just breezing through it with little effort.

I played overture several years ago and back then I found it cool, tense as fuck and the puzzles were challenging. Now it just seems boring and piss easy. I'm just jumping around from puzzle to puzzle while the gay monsters chase me fruitlessly since you outpace them and even if they catch you you can tank 3 or 4 hits before dying, hell you can even bully them with crates.

tl;dr it's a fucking walking sim littered with moderately easy puzzles, handholding and not meh horror.

I don't disagree, but they were far more effective at being horror than most other late 2000s games. They've aged pretty poorly and the fact the first few were made by like five Swedish guys really shows.

Which is kind of sad, given that there are some genuinely good RPG Maker horror games (i.e., the Crooked/Boogeyman series). Doubly so considering they somewhat keep the point & click tradition alive while it's effectively dead in most mainstream games.

I actually went in expecting something vague like Lisa or Yume Nikki. I don't consider those terror, just abstract, and they are enjoyable on their on. Ao Oni was just convoluted puzzles with jump scares out of it's ass. Shit like Ib at least had a mediocre story, Ao Oni is below that.

But will THAT Leon eventually develop into the Leon everyone liked in RE4 or is he gonna be going in a completely different direction now? Art style aside, I just don't see how REmake Leon will become our Leon.

To be honest I hope we get a a reboot universe that sees more of Raccoon City and the surrounding area. Maybe even delaying or stopping the nuke or just visiting neighboring cities dealing with their own outbreaks.

That path could show Leon growing into his RE4 self or just not have him end up that way altogether.

NuRE2 Leon is still as much of a dweeb as he was in the original. The only thing really off-putting about his character in this game is how much he swears. Claire is a lost cause. She's loud and angry a lot and swears more than Leon. I don't understand Claire's characterization in the remake.

Does leon not get the magnum early in numake 2? You could drop that fucker with a full magazine in the original, and the magnum has no other real use anyway so it's not like it's a waste.

0a2aef  No.16045263

>>16045143

You can get the magnum pretty early on if you know where to look. I got magnum ammo about two hours before getting the magnum, myself. I don't think I got the magnum before encountering Mr. X, but it's not like he's all that hard to avoid. The only time he's really a problem, or any enemy for that matter, is when you're in a narrow corridor. Enemies have strangely long range in the remake. Ammo is a little scarce for the magnum if you don't make more. I think I collected maybe 30 rounds throughout my entire Leon A playthrough, and I missed very few items in that playthrough. I saved my magnum ammo for the Mr. X fight at the end.

it's an ok game despite having little "game" in it. it has a great atmosphere, decent bgms and weird as fuck visuals. the gameplay revolves about exploring and finding items, you find everything and you win. the "plot" is cryptic as fuck and nearly all speculation. honestly speaking it entertained me for a while and I really enjoyed the atmosphere it set, it was a calming and kinda freaky experience for the most part. it manages to make you curious enough to keep exploring to see new areas and shit. I got pretty annoyed by the fact some shit is really hard to figure out and it's hard as fuck to get your bearings like this anon mentioned >>16045602 but getting lost is kinda part of the charm of it. one thing I can tell you is that when I finished with it I was kinda bummed out that I was done with it and there wasn't any more to see, so make of that what you will.

Likewise, the 'combat system' in Overture is designed to be clunky and borderline unusable, only to be used as a last ditch attempt if you are in serious trouble. you swear what? I was and that shit could only scare a 12 year old.

literally only the first encounter with the monsters is sorta tense because you don't know what to do how they act and shit but once you realise the dogs can be killed effortlessly after you manage to hit them ONCE because they go limp like sacks of shit and you can even teabag them waiting for them to get back only to get whacked again to the shadow realm, and that the alien penis-in-stomach monsters are total slow ass pushovers and fucking disappear for good once you enter a loading screen door, you just end up running and jumping around without a care in the world, they're useless and they cannot hurt you.

I'm assuming you mean games that are of the horror type. Some games have some incredibly terrifying segments but they aren't horror. That said:

>Blood Bath Bay

A free game, your goal is to platform and collect 30 snails. The water is murky and pretty big fish wanna eat you, so mind your step.

>Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Did that statue just turn to look at you? is the room suddenly blood? Better save just in case. This game is good at keeping you paranoid about EVERYTHING.

They speed things up a little by giving you an item early that unlocks most the area. Mostly because Mr X isn't only in the police station any more. And Leon B makes no sense when Claire A shows Mr X getting his ass kicked by Birkin. Post care park Claire A was golden. Nice nostalgia with some tense moments. Go there with Leon and it turns into The last of us and a DLC promo. It's a real shame.

What did you guys think about SOMA? So far it's one of my favorite games. The setting and story are just really dark and interesting to me, and it feels like there's tons of lore to find as you make your way through the stations. I guess that's kinda what I want in horror games, to get immersed in the story and setting rather than having to constantly run away from some unkillable enemy. SOMA has those too, but it's not like they're around all the time so you do have chances to kinda explore and figure out what happened.

d11aa3  No.16077957

I thought it was pretty shitty tbh. There's a really hard cut between stealth sections and walking sections which ruins the atmosphere cos half the time you know you're safe, the environments are extremely claustrophobic so you're crouching round a table like a benny hill skit but then you also know where the enemy is at all times so there's no surprises. The guy you play as too is such a fucking retard. His constant lack of understanding of even the most basic concepts was annoying at best.

I also didn't find the setting or premise anything special and I don't think they utilised it very well. I remember there was some evil ghost that haunts you later on that represents the infection or w.e and you get a choice to unplug its sphere and I don't remember it mattering at all or really coming up again and it never really came up before.

Last week i gave up on Yomawari after the piece of shit crashed 10 fucking times, all in the same spot, i downloaded it many times from both pkgj and nopaystation and it still crashes, and i don't want to start over, sasuga NISA.

Today i decided to play the PS2 version of Silent Hill 3 in hard mode face it, the PC port is ass even with patches, i got to the first boss fight in the game and when i pressed L1 to move to the side while aiming heather just stood there shooting the worm and got eaten, when i reloaded the save and tried strafing i found out the L1 button is broken even though it was working fine just a few days ago then again it is a shitty translucent bootleg dualshock 2 that i got for 7 dollars on some flea market, i don't know how to solder and i don't have a spare controller so SH3 will have to wait until next week. I ordered a wireless controller from amazon for $13 and it should be here in 2 days, but i'm still keeping the old one in case i need to cannibalize the buttons or something.

At least i found a copy of Code Veronica X in good condition for cheap, it came with the manual and a blue ps1 memory card with a LED that lights up when you save, there were also a few beat up dualshock 2s in there but i didn't know i was going to need them, if they're still there next friday i'll grab a couple.

personally I dislike "stealth" sections in horror games because I feel like they become very easy to cheese through once you understand how the AI works. Once you learn the route or what to do, they become trivial and just kinda annoying, so horror games the rely of invincible enemies tend to fall flat after a time or on repeated playthroughs. Invincible enemies are a thing in SOMA, but like you said, you're not always being chased or hunted. Which I think is cool, because it lets you explore and figure out what happened rather than just run from safe area to safe area and miss most of the map. That's kinda why I've avoided Alien Isolation for now, I don't want to have to sit around and wait for X minutes every time the bad guy shows up, I want to feel immersed and creeped out by the world I'm in.

The MC being an idiot and not understanding the premise is sort of irrelevant. I found the plot and lore behind it all to be really cool and interesting. I do wish your choices in the game actually mattered, but they don't really, outside of what you imagine happens after the game. It could have used more puzzles too, as it is it's a bit of a walking simulator. But still, I love the lore too much to dislike it just based on that. The interaction between Simon who doesn't really understand what's happening vs Catherine who understands everything but is unwilling to explain fully creates a lot of tension, because over time the player figures it out and you realize why Catherine is holding back. On the first playthrough I think most people fall on Simon's side, but afterwards you realize what Catherine was doing and why she obscured things.

The WAU subplot is one of the most disappointing things, because you really have to read terminal entries to understand why you might want to kill it. If you just listen to Catherine and ignore everything else, killing it is meaningless. And whether you kill it or not, the game doesn't really change. That and killing yourself are the two real choices you get in the game that might possibly have an impact on the ending, but neither changes anything really.

Maybe i just don't have the balls to kill a loved one, not even my dog, i've never even considered it.

>Assuming you're playing blind, every boss in SH3 is a huge bullet sponge on hard mode, ESPECIALLY the final boss.

I've played it at least 5 times, but never in hard mode, i don't think ammo will be an issue though, the katana is so fucking good i can kill everything with it, even god, without getting hit that much, he only gets me with the arm sweep, i mean you need to do exactly that in order to get the beam saber in new game plus, the only boss i use a gun to kill is alessa and even then only because i find her annoying.

>Hoard everything for it, because there's almost no supplies in the entire last area

Really? Maybe it's because heather doesn't get a rifle and thus has to waste shotgun ammo on bosses? The rifle was more or less the dedicated boss killer ala resident evil's magnum, you didn't get much ammo for it but the few rounds you got were enough to put down every single boss in the game.

I think God melee attacks much more often on hard, making it nearly impossible to avoid getting caught eventually. And you can die in a couple hits, while it's going to take several minutes for the katana or maul to kill it. However, there is a trick where its arm swipes will pass through you if you stand in a certain spot, I think around its left wrist as close as you can get. It's absurdly precise though.

Soma would have been a lot better if they took out all the monsters. Because the environments are so small learning the AI is very easy and its really just time consuming more than anything. They also all have pretty terrible designs, I feel like the infection ruins a lot of the body horror because all the monsters just look like a jumble of random parts glued together for no real reason rather than strogg style body mods or hellraiser cenobites. The first monster you bump into is some dumb lumbering thing with legs and a flashlight for a head but you can't really see a person underneath so it just looks like a dumb robot.

The MC I just found really annoying, I hate it in games when the character you play understands less than you do as the player and it's the basic stuff he doesn't get that annoyed me the most. He just doesn't understand the difference between copy and paste and cut and paste, it's not that complicated dude.

There are some cool concepts in there and the way the WAU treats "preserve life" is one of them but like most of the game it doesn't go anywhere and they don't really play around with it through interaction. It feels a lot more like a book where you're just being told about these concepts but you never get to really take part in them other than one maybe 2 cutscenes, if that even counts.

As a side note SOMA looked way cooler with its pre-release trailer. It looked a lot more giger biomechanical and alien. It somehow became a lot more toned down and boring human facilities.

It's been a while since I've played but I remeber there being flashbacks/callbacks to Mary lashing out at him. I've never known anyone who became terminally ill way too early in life, but… no one signs up for that shit. James married a happy, healthy, beautiful woman and the disease transformed her into someone angry and sick that he couldn't physically love, and he just had to deal with it as a loyal husband. Mary was the one who became ill but they both got screwed. I interpreted that his main priority for killing Mary was a desperate attempt to get his own life back, and "mercy killing" her was a flimsy excuse to justify what he did.

Angela had the most depressing arc by far. "For me, it's always like this."

Lets be deep and hipster about this. People who identify with James are idiots and not getting even 10% of that games true emotional interaction. Not because James is emotionally stunted or he's a murderer, but because James is not the character who matters in the story as much as Mary does.

Mary is a woman who loves someone so damn much but is sick, she's a burden and knows she's holding back the person she cares for most in the world. He's going to be alone and he's struggling to deal with it, struggling to deal with a problem he isn't responsible for but can't walk away from. When you hear Mary's letter in the ending and she's apologosing for being sick it resonates extremely hard with people in a similar situation. Any one with a disability, chronic or terminal illness hears that voice in the back of their head speaking. The one that tells them to go become a hermit and distance themselves from everything they care about. To prevent yourself tormenting what you care for most you have to hurt them and walk away and then they will hate you for it and drag you back as hard as they can. It's perfectly written, it's very well delivered and it rips apart a very sensitive nerve that you don't want touch and only ever explore in your darkest moments.

It's one of the few actual moments in SH2 that has depth. Not a flaming stair case or some fat guy in a meat locker. Real world, actual reality depth that doesn't have to rely on stupid gimmicks in a game or get ruined by a boss fight afterwards. It's not some self imposed depth that totally didn't com from a 3 hour youtube video about lamp posts representing Jame's dick. It's raw, emotion with no way to read around it or spoil it's meaning. It's just a dying person saying what all seriously sick people feel deep down and keep closed off from the world.

Anyone with a disability that feels that way can be considered emotionally abused. Otherwise guys like you are rightfully seen as condescending assholes.

I can sort of see what you're talking about. I've got asscancer, so I've had thoughts several times that I've been on a burden on friends and family but not once have they ever told me I was. I will tell you that Mary's letter hits me much harder now than it did in the past, before the cancer.

A disability as livable as a speech impediment doesn't really have any place to talk in a discussion about the guilt a crippled and dying person might feel about the people they directly rely on to survive.

That's true, getting a shitty deal in life automatically means you feel like a piece of shit sucking the life out of everyone around you. It's true of having terminal cancer, but also of having any disability! Self respect and will to live just stops being an option the very instant you stop being a normalfag.

i never knew the proxies were blind until I read the wiki after I beat the game once. If you play like they can see you it's pretty tense. Overall though I think the monsters just add tedium to certain sections because of how cramped everything is. But that's part of the reason I dislike invincible enemies in general in horror games, they usually just railroad you in a certain direction and force you to run by so many places you want to explore. They're scary, but usually just because getting caught means dying and having to replay areas over and over.

I thought the story was the main high point of the game, because it seems kinda plausible to me. It seems somewhat grounded in tech that could actually work some day. It's not so simple as to be boring and cliche, but not so advanced that you can tell the writers were intentionally making it sound complex to avoid having to explain it. The story, combined with all the terminal entries and notes, it all fleshed out the last few months of life in the desolate place and it just felt so creepy and hopeless and depressing.

They have a psychic sense to know when you are looking at them or their general direction.

This thread can still go on for another week, so i'm bumping it with an useless blogpost.

My wireless dualshock 2 just arrived and it's not the one i ordered, i was supposed to get one that looks exactly like a legit controller, but i got this "3-in-1" piece of shit that has old PC controller buttons 1 to 4 instead of the PS2 layout or even the Xbox's and had some pieces inside loose the rumble motors, i was surprised that it even came with those, anyway it supposedly works with PS2, PS3 and PC, but i am not gonna use this for anything but my PS2 so i swapped the face buttons from my broken controller to this one and fixed the motors, it works surprisingly well, however it uses AA batteries instead of the advertised AAA, so i have to buy another pair of eneloops.

I was expecting all the buttons to be digital and the thumbsticks to have massive deadzones, but i used a padtester homebrew, GT4 and ACZ to test it and the controller works almost exactly like a legit dualshock 2, how do i know this? Because it turns out i did have another controller: the one that came with the slim PS2 i bought in 2010 that i never used, but after trying a wireless controller i can't go back to a wired one, still it's nice to have a brand new dualshock 2 in 2019.

Only someone who hasn't experienced it would consider that. There's 2 more posts in the thread by people who are seriously ill and they get it. If people are 100% supportive and caring you will feel like shit for them wasting their efforts on you. There is no way to prevent people feeling this way at points because it's reality. You are a burden, you do make things worse for people, you can't not do this. It's part of the package and it's no ones fault.

Hope you recover mate. Wouldn't want you to suffer the same fate as Total biscuit. No one should spend their entire life reviewing PC menus

Chernoblite looks interesting. Survival in The zone with spooky shit could be cool.

Since my family is destined to succumb to a degenerative disease or illness half the time (two sides of the family) that will kill them I've already seen the attitude shift Mary makes and every time it's because others in the family encourage them to blame themselves, or they say nothing at all and let everyone stew in resentment as they seek outlets to not feel useless. A healthy family discourages that attitude or helps with acceptance since my family is shit I'm well aware how wrong you are.

Okay Mr Mind reader. I'm sure you're the one people turn to in their darkest hour. You're totally the one who understands the inner feelings they keep to themselves.

Do you think people haven't experienced those exact scenarios? "Oh you're not a burden ^_^" when you first start dating someone, then 6 months later when your illness gets a bit worse you can see the sparkle leaves their eye and they're worn down by it. Or when you have a serious episode and you see your family exhausted afterwards, because they watched helplessly as someone they cared about suffered? "It's okay, you're not a burden ^_^" doesn't mean shit to you when you see it in their eyes. And it's not resentment, anger or anything of the sort. It's someone suffering watching someone they care about suffer and having no way to make it better.

Pro tip faggot. I've been on both sides of it. I know you're full of shit and have nothing to do with the day to day care of the family members you're probably making up. Seeing them at barmitzvahs doesn't count as having sick family members.

Who says I am? I've done the same thing out of spite, my family is shit I'm no exception.

> family members you're probably making up.

Me (soon it's genetic), Dad, dad's dad, Dad's mom is dead so not a clue about her, Mom, mom's dad, Mom's mom, aunt (mom's sister), all my cousins from my aunt's side plus they have some sort of degenerative muscle tissue going on (childhood friends) but that stopped in early childhood. My mom in particular was slowly dieing from her body not absorbing iron and wasn't even aware of it because she already had other problems so she didn't notice until she lucked out with a not shit doctor. Incidentally I am apparently a Jew so that explains a lot.

So far the only healthy people I know in my direct family that i keep in contact with more then just one family gathering a year is my brother because my mom's a bit of a whore and people who married into the family.

But enough blogposting, you don't shit about what a true James is like.
