It simply had the best gameplay. There were still many problems with the character's movesets or stages not being as good as some of the 64 stages but overall it was still a solid game. Every game after neutered the gameplay for no reason with Ultimate being the closest to a Smash game that actually felt like a sequel to Melee in terms of gameplay. Not as precise but still isn't slow as shit or overly defensive. Yet somehow they've actually managed to add even more clones. Still, the whole roster trumps Melee and there are far less useless moves or abysmal characters like in Brawl. I still think PM is the best thing to come from Smash though.

I don't really give a shit what autists argue. There are plenty of autists arguing about how 10 is the best Final Fantasy. I just don't see it. I see the differences between the different games, and while I don't even agree that speed = good, the few mechanic advantages I see from Melee to Ultimate are outweighed heavily by Melee's shit character balance.
My main in every Smash game is Kirby, because I like the character and played the shit out of him in 64. I hated Melee because Kirby was aids in it. It's only when I tried other characters that I liked it more, but that says a lot about the game.
Like I said earlier, in Ultimate, I can pick a random character and they'll be solid. I can't do that in Melee. I find that much more important than tricks I'll never be able to pull off because I don't take the game seriously anyway.

I would say that entries are different and with the smash games, each game needs to be evaluated on its own merits. Melee is a pretty good game with a lot of tech skill but it has quite a few faults, mostly the tier differences and recovery.
Smash 4 has less tech skill but more rounded recoveries for the roster, but ultimately suffers from a similarly stratified metagame.
Ultimate is not old enough to have a solidified meta and tech/movement is much improved from 4, but not quite to melee

The one thing melee has over 64 and every official smash after it is movement, but ProjectM covers that along with the addition of brawl's advanced tech like DACUSing, and B-reversing/wavebouncing.

Project M, mechanically, was better than Melee ever was. The worst thing about it was that it advertised itself as "Melee but in Brawl" even though it was so much more than that.
While Brawl and Sm4sh were not very good, Ultimate is the first time in a while I'd say a Smash game has been truly quality. I suppose Sakurai finally got it again. Then again, he did bring in professional players for balancing, so that might've had something to do with it.

The items in general got really annoying. Brawl the first time my friends and I agreed to turn off items. We're not even competitive players. I will admit the stagebuilder was fun though. It was limited but I can give it a pass for being the first time it was used.
Project M even to casuals like us was good because the characters were better balanced so our favorite character didn't feel useless. Also it used stock by default.
