Cant give answer because I never got to play the specialist game, even when I wanted to (Only specialist game I got interesed, too bad GW canned it , and still no news of the new version). In any case, games are Real Time tactical games, so its not turn based, if that is what you mean.
Speaking of tableboard. I got at its time Tabletop simulator (And havent used it yet, to be fair), but dont know if there is available a mod of BFG, and if there are people to play it, or at least an AI to play alone….

Who else has seen the newest Astartes fan short? Part Three came out a couple of weeks ago.
Personally, I don't think I'd be called a fan of 40k, as it seems like knowing the lore is tied into the game. I tried to get "into it" several times, but I think the lore is so much of an over bloated mess, that it could sit next to Nurgle. I think 40k is better suited with less background, and more pretty explosive purging of heretics and/or xenos, or preparations for pretty explosive purging of heretics and/or xenos. And Astartes captures these two sentiments almost perfectly.

About Battlefleet Gothic 2 - I saw that the Tau of all the people got two factions for themselves. What's the difference, gameplay-wise?
Knowing Tau, I expect both will be extra-shooty at long rang and weak in melee/ against ramming attacks, but I really don't see why you'd need two different Tau fleets unless one is attached to the Farsight Enclaves and hence has a radically different combat doctrine.

Your guess is incorrect. Even with an SSD you'll still be spending 2-3 minutes waiting for 400 or so minor factions who don't matter at all to finish their turns.
BFGA2 is kinda disappointing. The core gameplay is exactly the same - which is good - and the (3&1/2) new factions all look pretty but everything else has taken a turn for the worse. The UI is some god awful mobage-blue bullshit. The little skirmish campaigns are gone now meaning 7 of the 12 factions are multiplayer only. This is the biggest gripe I have with the game since I have absolutely no interest in MP. The campaigns that you do get are retarded in several ways. Off the top of my head: There's a (soft) turn limit, there's no way to disband a fleet so if you want to get rid of one the only way to do so is to suicide it into the enemy and there's no way to transfer ships between fleets either. Also there's some retarded anticheat software so if you wanted to use CE to send 10 Battleships into one skirmish or something you can get fucked.

I always thought SS IG was pretty bullshit because you have the steady Baneblade convoys, relatively regular enemy attack waves (most enemy stronghold missions have little to none), artillery strikes, and garrisoned buildings up the ass.
Then again, there's the Tau stronghold in both DC and SS where the Tau magically vomit up a Great Knarloc every five minutes.

Campaigns for other factions are going to be DLC. They haven't said it yet, but they will be. They only chose one faction that has more than one fleet type to pull from for their fleets. Imperium was going to be in it no matter what, but the Necrons and Nids are an odd choice other than to use them for more promotional material for ads because every other faction that could have a standalone campaign was in the first game in one shape or another. Yeah, you only had Corsairs for Eldar and the Protector fleet for Tau, but they were still in the game in some shape. So, you can bet your ass there is going to be an Eldar campaign DLC which will be miserable from how fragile those ships are that uses all three of their factions, a Tau one, an Ork and a Chaos one.

>Fleet sizes are limited so at level 3-4 you only can have a bunch of cruisers tops, unless you could mass produce escorts, that although not useless and can be deadly, arent very durable and can be easily destroyed, becoming a waste of valuable resources.
>Ships reparations is overall long, so you will be multiple turns just to make your heavily damaged ships ready for battle. This will happen a lot.
>Meanwhile the enemy can always reinforce their fleets whatever they want, and also upgrade the system defenses, while you fucking struggle for having an economy to even do anything

I know turning the battlefield into an AoE spam fest is what terminators are supposed to do, but it doesn't translate well into good game play, I think. Especially against a faction whose "swarm everything with melee" strategy is best countered by an AoE spam fest.
Game should have designed around being a tactical FPS with a limited arsenal where funneling Genestealer swarms into kill zones to compensate for limited weaponry is a primary strategy, and where individual squad member commands are a big mechanic, possibly giving the player control over two different terminator squads.

DeathWing is a good game, but one of the problems it has is that the design of the levels, plus the enormous quantity of genestealers that are thrown off at you, and which dont die at 1-2 shots of the main bolters makes that, unless you activate Friendly Fire (which is really difficult because its hard to NOT hit your allies in tight corridors, and/or when being overwhelmed by hordes), is more rentable to use AOE weapons or High rate weaponry, over the normal weapons. Thats the only problem I have with the game.

Agreed, the game needs to be incredibly difficult with limited ammo, a supply line possibly from the outside, and techmarine help if possible. Driving the enemy into one cavity zone via sealing (electronically or physically, or welding) off should be the idea of the game. Have a few missions sealing off, or play as a side character who will die sealing off a sector doing his duty. Just like the Death of Integrity book.

The 'Crons are worse in some ways. You get systems that will actively drain you of resources until you upgrade them. You also get some systems that give a nice windfall, but that is about it. There are ways to see what upgrades will do, you have to hover over the "abilities" of the system. The campaign is set up specifically so you can't avoid this too, since one of the systems they want you to conquer has that negative on it, and the final system has one that increases Imperial and Chaos threat level by one for each turn it is owned. The starting fleet limit is also rather limiting; two escorts and a light cruiser, no more. Even if you have room for more, you can't have them because of the escort limit that is based on number of line ships.
The upgrade for escorts to give them 25% more health seems like it would be necessary for much of the campaign, but it only comes into play when they level up. That 25% more health also doesn't translate into much and you can't actually check their level outside of a battle, I think.

Yeah, in late game, although it can have its times, its overall very easy, because then you got good weapons, learned to save/earn cognition points and leveled around 3-4 tech-priests in a non-dumb way. I played pirated game in 1.0.6, so unless later patches have changed, game becomes really easy at that time.
Still, the game is good, and is well done, I loved it. Mechanics are good, soundtrack is amazing and fits perfectly into the Mechainucus part of Warhammer 40K, and the plot did its job. I would recommend it to any 40K fan.

1.0.8 was the patch that nerfed a lot of weapons by decreasing damage and increasing a few in cognition cost, 1.1 is where they changed the level 1 lexmechanic and explorator trees. The game is still fairly easy once you fully spec out a few tech priests like you said despite the nerfs. I'd recommend anyone pirating it to get 1.1 since it adds new hidden missions and irons out a few bugs.

I haven't played that game, but I did play Star Hammer and that used that type of system. It worked out pretty well, and it was more or less my issues with the plot that made me stop, that and the fact that the game had a very reasonable, but annoying way of snowballing one way or another in the campaign. The plot issue was that it felt pretty annoyingly leftist; so you play as a stronk womyn captain/admiral with a hotshot female pilot and a cowardly male scientist for early crew. The snowball issue with the campaign is that if you lose a ship, it is gone and you don't get more ships until set points in the campaign and it is very much set what you get. So I could see it getting out of hand quickly if you weren't good, and becoming too easy if you were good at it. Its kind of sad because the basic gameplay was good.

That was really crazy. The fleet limit bullshit is a given, but what made this mission so hard was that the Two Titan-Roks barely could damage each other over a long period, even if that was suppodely was would make the player be relieved & given a chance to make this mission. what the hell?
>>16053023
Funny, I barely passed that mission almost in the situation like in the posterior mission. With Spire, and maybe another fucked ship, only alive. Orks are a pain to fight when in great numbers, and unfortunately, in their missions, thay always have a shitload of ship for some retarde reason, while you are fucked by the ship limit by battle.

Chaos is just simple and not really hard, Eldar ship can be very damaging, but are fragile, Necrons are few ships and not really resistant in the end; Now Tyranids , just like in the Ork special missions, when I fought the Ancient One, I almost loosed the mission, because big shit was really hard to kill, and there were always hordes of cruisers coming at you!

Finally beat it and the mission after, thus putting the ork menace to an end. The key with space whales is to pace yourself - stay in a corner while playing frogger with the whales, so that ork reinforcements trickle in one at a time (and, if you're lucky, get damaged by whales on the way to you) whereas yours arrive immediately. Even then the mission is fairly hard, but nowhere near as much as if you went for normal engagement. Remember to pick your targets and utilise troops as much as possible to take the beefier cunts out of comission without having to whittle them down with your guns. Also, make sure you use bomber squadrons because the pack a massive punch (at least on bigger ships) and orks have very few turrets to deal with them.
You can use the same tactic with the second ork mission – just stay at map bottom, deal with the waves one at a time as quickly at possible, and if you're lucky, one of the roks will destroy the other's subsystems, making the fight easier (even then, it's a battle of attrition. Do not go in without a proper beefy fleet)
I like how every tool they give you is usable under certain conditions, so I never end up spamming just one approach. Torpedoes are good if you have the skill to use them, boarding is excellent against certain targets, bombing runs work miracles if you can strip the anti-air, ramming is always viable, nova cannons shit over basically everything (but limited ammo and you got to place them carefully so that the enemy doesn't run away). The ork missions feel like a litmus test where you got to utilise all that shit to win the war of attrition they put you through

Now balance is something to be worried indeed. Necrons precisely are really underpowered for what they should be, while being few in numbers, so its easy to kill them. If they will want the game to have a lasting multiplayer, then they have to fix the balance.

I don't agree. I know that homeworld or the original imperium galactica are not something you see every day but speaking strictly mechanics both BFG games are ass. There's no tacticool feel like you'd see in nexus:JI or even that new space hammer game and there's no fun thru sheer lasers and degree flying about like you'd see in your average RTS. Empire at War did a far superior campaign map, story campaign AND amazingly enough, space battles.
What you have are ten reskins of essentially the same ship per class, per faction that have AI that's retarded on it's good day. Combat that's dull. Abilities that are underwhelming; really, you can't group torpedoes? Your bomber wing is five craft? and a "global" map, the idea of which I love but that's mostly for show with fancy graphics but minimal stuff to do. When Chapter Master, which was a free, hobby tier horror show of a game did that much better you really need to ask yourself why am I keeping Joe McCan'tdesignforshit on the team.
The fact that it's a buggy mess doesn't help, either.
>Space Marine & DeathWing EE are good/Above average games
Again, I don't agree. Space Marine had some amazing memes and laughs that came from it and it was fun for a round or two in multiplayer but it grew old real fast. It was what you'd get from gears of war if you made it even more retard friendly. DeathWing was among the worst games I played in my life, and I'm not even holding the shit graphics or the bugs all that against it.
This guy >>16062711 has the right idea: all those games are very basic, very simple and would fall flat on their face even harder without the WH40k setting and name. And that's nothing new, before there were Rites of War which was a shittier Panzer General, GorkaMorka which was more of less Mario Kart and that crappy necromunda game which was yet another neutered DOOM.
>Mechanicus
That game did two things right in my book: it plays with something not really explored anywhere else: the cogfags and unlike BFG it has a decent amount of customization to satisfy that catch them all and muh min max autism.

I'd say chapter master, but yeah. They're fairly different games, with different scopes and different styles. Final Liberation is probably the best of the lot, with Chaos Gate a decent enough X-Com/Laser Squad game. Rites of War is a more streamlined Panzer General 2 but it has it's charm, mainly because it puts a spotlight on less explored themes of Eldar and Genestealer infested PDFs. Slitherine tries but it's more of the modern style of 40k games; for example most of the unit roster is something you'll never, ever build because it's redundant and you've got something slightly better already or it's plain shit.

Anyone tried it on vanilla / modded version?

Also, destroying the Eldar main base in Dark Crusade its definitely possible - it just requires a lot of patience. The AI doesn't rebuild the fire prisms, so you basically have to take them out one by one with heavy anti-vehicle units (in your case, Heavy Destroyers or massed Immortals).
If you play as IG, you also can "just" spam earthshaker rounds from your basilisks at the Eldar buildings and vehicle while using the the scan ability of your HQ(s) to act as a spotter.
This all being said, there's no real point in it. Destroying all buildings of the Eldar nets you the same ending as holding the portals does, but waiting out the countdown takes less time than destroying the base. Matter of fact, you'll probably have to leave one of the strategic points uncapped if you actively want to destroy the base for one reason or another.

You mean Dawn of War III? I'm still fucking pissed off about that. Okay, the original Dawn of War was a pretty good generic RTS, Dawn of War II, although different from the original in play style, was still a fun Company of Heroes clone with a neat progression and loadout system that made it unique enough to be its own thing. DoW III was a fucking atrocity because the devs wanted it to be a MOBA first and a DoW game second. They sacrificed a well-loved franchise on the alter of cheap gimmick games that only gooks play. And the worst part is, because DoW III was such a flop, we wont ever see another DoW game.

Honestly i'd love TW:Warhammer more but any fucking TW game past Rome in terms of campaign is fucking awful.
Most OG TW fans will probably know what i'm talking about so i'll try to explain for those who haven't played any game before ROME 2,
Like seriously I could spend maybe a full hour ranting about all the terrible shit but I think the three things that kill it for me the most is:
>Provinces divided into sections, usually three, There's various reasons for why this is an issue, one of which is that the only part of the province with a good garrison is usually the capital, the other parts of the province can't be upgraded nearly as much and almost turn into just pure dead weight, the reason for that is due to public order.
Public order instead of being a settlement to settlement basis is province-wide.
Why would this in any way make sense? It didn't make sense in ROME 2 and it makes even less sense here, could you think of a reason the people inside the walls of ROME would get pissed off at some fuck-off colony being claimed by your people? It's even worse when you have to start re-conquering the lands and suddenly the entire province is pissed off because of the provincial-wide public order.
So you'll have these long periods of time where you have to just sit on a settlement making as much happiness related buildings as you can to ensure your people stop getting pissed off for no reason or else a fuck-off rebel army will materialize from thin air and burn your shit down.
>Agents are pointless
You can't even argue this one, can you name the amount of times you actually used a malicious agent action besides "STEAL TECHNOLOGY" If you even had a remote chance at it, the problem with agents Pre-Shogun is
1.Their actions are too fucking expensive, you'd probably get just as much done by buying a new army.
2.The chances are too low so alot of the time the money would be a waste.
3.It's ultimately pointless, say you Assassinated a general, now in games like Medieval 2, that would be kind of a big deal, you can't just buy another general from thin-air, in every game past ROME 2, generals are literally expendable, even more so in Warhammer due to the fact Legendary Lords never die. So the most you could do with actions like assassinate is have one single unit card removed from a battle.
Funnily enough, in Shogun although Agent actions did cost money, it was actually affordable, doable, and worth the risk due to the effect it could have on enemy armies.
Ultimately the only actions from agents that remain useful is the veterancy increase action, and replenish wounded action, since it's free and it can't fuck up.
Speaking of Generals,
>Generals are essential for doing literally anything,
Besides already needing to take up alot of income for just merely existing, Generals aren't just a support you can use for your armies, they are a fucking REQUIREMENT that must be in every army, you are not allowed to divide whatsoever and this all kind of ties back into two of the main problems.
Because you need Generals for basically picking your own fuckin' nose, you can hire them at any time, meaning you don't got to breed sons, adopt or occasionally hire like Shogun 2, you are just allowed to buy them at any time, general got assassinated? Very quickly hire a new one.
The other reason why this is bad, remember the whole province garrison problem? Well because of the way armies work now and how they MUST have a general at all times, instead of doing something logical and dividing a army into 3 separate armies to help defend a province, you instead must hire 2 generals (Say goodbye to your hard earned income) and then place the units from your original army into these generals.
It's even more disgusting when you realize Warhammer's campaign map mechanics are mostly just repainted ROME 2 mechanics.

Yes. The newer the game the more of a pain it is. It's got more DRM, more always online tier bullshit and they have a tendency of purposely made tiny patches that they've stated as much are designed to mess with the pirates by breaking the mods. They also purposely killed most of the modding scene in the pursuit of the greater DLC good so the mods generally end up harder to install but less complex overall the more recent the game.

This isn't even a game by game comparison; for start it's over nine thousand units with AoR mechanics in their native (dead) language name and a small encyclopedia for it's description vs lol I rehashed some stock models and what else am I supposed to do when it's easier to pull teeth than edit the map?
As for the micro patches that's easy enough to verify. More so for a fucking steamfag.

For BFG Armada 2, which fleet is best for each faction, or at least, which fleet composition is good enough for a beginner in a faction? Been playing ranked, but with imperial (Navy, Astartes and mechanicus) mostly. I can say that for Astartes, using fully Strike cruisers with board torpedoes is really powerfull, almost OP. Been testing Imperial with Overlord with Armaggedons/Lunars, and is good when taking torpedoes & ramming upgrades. Mechanicus is a weaker faction and its harders, at least trying with mostly carriers.

This review of BFGA2 is spot on on the problems the game have righ now. In resume:
>Gameplay is all about cheese to win
>Battles and scale are too small
>Bigger is best, no reason at all to take smaller ships
>Campaign is badly paced
>Missions are for the most part boring
>Voice acting is terrible
>Mentions the devs being petty and not wanting players to play how they want
Specially the last part is 100 %spot on. Most of the problems the game have are really easy to fix, but many weeks after the release, yet the devs havent done it, they just released a hotfix, and just a BETA mode for a bigger 2vs2 ranked (No 1vs1, or skirmish).

They brought in GW writers. The only thing I am happy about is that the Necron lord you play as is a pretty alright guy. The prologue did not give me a lot of hope because it had that weird forced urgency. The first game played up the urgency very naturally. Everything felt like a very natural, and depressing, progression from the previous step.
>the feel
The space battles are supposed to be weirdly reasonable in 40k. They are closer to LoGH than Star Wars. Which is why scale was not as important, and things like a Craftworld could be fielded in game. Armada did not follow that, and while the launch trailer of the first game was a pretty nice thing, that was not how it was supposed to work. It is a fine complaint, but I don't think he would like what the lore would be.
I agree with all of what he is saying, though. I'm not even sure why the battles aren't larger given that the reduced number of ability usages and the like should mean there is more emphasis on larger numbers and expendable ships.

>The space battles are supposed to be weirdly reasonable in 40k. They are closer to LoGH than Star Wars.
More or less yes. In the tabletop game manual, its said that the game is a 2D representation of the in-universe void warfare, which is big in scale & given a more 3D style (Even tought ships still dont have a lower spinal weaponry for some retarded reason, leaving the underside aof a ship always unprotected. This is one of the few gripes I have to WH40K related to void warfare).
>I agree with all of what he is saying, though. I'm not even sure why the battles aren't larger given that the reduced number of ability usages and the like should mean there is more emphasis on larger numbers and expendable ships.
Exactly, yet the devs think that having more than 5 big ships is too hard. BFGA1, being more focused on a battlegroup, and more based on the tabletop, mean you didnt controlled that many ships, but each ship was customizable, and formed part of your own custom battlegroup. But with the sequel being more about Battlefleets in theory, should be more about bigger fleets, and although the game require micro-managent to be good, you dont need as much compared to the first one.
>>16125358
Indeed, BFGA1 campaign was well done. Excellent feeling, with a variety of missions (Some type of missiond not being good or enjoyable types of missions is another matter), while the way you controlled a Battlegroups, that you couldnt always deply all ships, made that you had to choose well which ship to use in a mission, plus thinking well about the upgrades given.
The sequels campaign is flawed because of dumb choices by the devs (Ship limit per battle, few variety of missions, and two game modes only, and with the necrons being weak, and tyranids OP), although if the Ship limit per battle were removed and the non-imperial campaigns fixed, it would then be good enjoyable enough; But still one could see that the campaigns in BFGA2 should have been more repayable, and more options given.

Game is not a turd, it could be good, but devs are scratching their balls, so the game now is mediocre.

Yeah, it isn't a 100% comparison because there are very short range engagements. That bit just bothered me since the cutscenes depicting only what amounted to knife fights was starting to drive me up the wall. I liked it fine in the launch trailer for 1 because it was well done, and it was a trailer that gave a general overview of the game. Cutscenes do not need to held to game mechanics.
>(Even tought ships still dont have a lower spinal weaponry for some retarded reason, leaving the underside aof a ship always unprotected. This is one of the few gripes I have to WH40K related to void warfare).
If I had to guess, it is because having no weapons on the bottom of the ship made it easy to recognize what the ship could do at a glance in a tabletop game.
