I don't understand how it's so underwhelming. I get MMO development is a massive undertaking, but it's almost like the developers did the exact opposite of what people would want.
You can't create your own flag, you can't create your own ship, you can't even create your own pirate. The only customization comes from microtransactions. There's only three quests, which are all the same quest. There's one enemy type. There's one boss, who doesn't give you anything for defeating it. There's no factions, no big pirate group to join. Only one location type. No different weapons to find or unlock. No upgrading system. Every pirate has the same tools with the same stats, no matter what. They made it as a streamer bait game, I get that, but that doesn't mean that it has to be so accessible to the point where there's literally no ladder to climb at all.

The problem is that it was essentially 6-7 minigames wrapped up into one game, with all of them having very little bearing on each other as far as choices you could make, and the entire thing was quite short.
The Expansion Pack tried to fix things by bringing back Creatures Mode(The most developed segment by far), but just ended up being GMod/Roblox minigames.
Surprisingly, I enjoyed the DS spinoff far more than the actual game. Paper Spore-io was a neat little game with a story.

More like it was a subpar 4X, strategy, etc. hybrid that failed to leave any meaningful impact. The creature stage, tribal stage, and civilization phase are generally avoided because they're so repetitive and lacking in content. Spore isn't a terrible game (not good, mind you) once you get to the space phase, but the issue is the other 80% of it is lackluster.

I think yearly release games all fall into this category. Imagine a game like pokemon or COD, if instead of rushing one out every year, it would get a bigger budget, more time, and focus on doubling, or even tripling it's content. I honestly think ending with creature would have been sufficient. Once you get to sapient thought it stops being about evolution and starts being about technology- so all the original stages up to and including creature/flying. You can also choose to perform your creature stage in the water if you wish. An expansion pack could have easily added the "technology age" which includes tribal, country, world domination, and space. I would wish though for some automation in the space stage; I can never play space for more than a half hour because of random ECO DISASTER PIRATES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WE ARE INCAPABLE OF SOLVING THIS ON OUR OWN OR BUILDING MORE THAN ONE SHIP and MAKE SURE TO MANUALLY PICK UP YOUR SPICE PROFITS.
