>made me wonder is it that does make a crossover a "good game"
The answer you're looking for, is impossibility.
The best kinds of crossovers are the shit we will probably never see in our lifetimes, because the things that need to cross over the most, are mutually exclusive from one another due to competition.
Though with Smash, seeing Sonic in a fucking Nintendo game of all things, and seeing him and Mario beat the shit out of each other is the kind of thing that 11-year-old me has always wanted. I wish I could go back in time and show Smash to myself then, when everyone was having arguments during recess about whether the SNES or the Genesis was better, and who would win in a fight between Sonic and Mario.
BroForce was pretty good for the same reason, seeing not-Arnold teaming up with not-Sylvester Stallone and other 80's action heroes. What'd be even better is if we got a Riddick-style game that features the likenesses and collaborations of all of those dudes, before it's too late.
The other kind of impossibilities that would make for an incredible crossover game:
>marvel vs. dc
>duke nukem, doom, serious sam
>ninja turtles teaming up with the power rangers
>wrestling game that features the entire rosters of the WWE, WCW and WWF from any given year
>twisted metal meets rock'n'roll racing

This also. Consistency is absolutely fucking everything. Otherwise tie-ins become as awkward as that Star Wars shit in fucking Soul Calibur.
But what's even worse are the crossovers that are plausible to happen, they just haven't.
>final fantasy meets dragon quest (maybe the chrono series so toriyama's art is consistent with DQ?)
>devil may cry meets bayonetta

Combining several RPG franchises would be the stuff of dreams, honestly.
>final fantasy
>chrono
>mana
>phantasy star
>skies of arcadia
>tales
>final fantasy tactics
>fire emblem
>der langrisser
So long as there's consistency in artstyle and quality all throughout, it'd be pretty fucking incredible. I'm sure there's some other good crossover ideas that I've missed.
Sorry for the blog, bros. I've been thinking on this exact topic for a few weeks now.
