Cheating in online videogame should only be permitted when you use it to harass people. I have had loads of fun aimbotting and killing everyone i see, changing my name to theirs so they kick the wrong guy, hearing them raged at me when they can do nothing. I cheat in games where the cheats make it more fun. I have mods in JC2 that extend grapple range and make parachute boosters more useful and give infinite ammo. In GTA:SA I use infinite ammo cheats, JUMPJET, recently installed a mod that triggers satchel charges by pressing a button instead of using a remote. Though I completed the campaign in both without using mods or cheats.
I also savescum a lot in games with heavy RNG elements, Rimworld and Kenshi and such. Losing a completely trained up character to a random stray bullet that just happens to instakill them from full health is not fun.

I don't see the appeal of cheating in multiplayer games, the gratification in those comes from beating the other player using your own skill and knowledge of the game. I can see why cheating to grief might be amusing but its not or me and most griefers are 14 year olds who just do it to yell "U MAD??" to put on their epic youtube rage videos. Old school cheats that changed aspects of the game were entertaining, I liked to fuck around with them but as a self imposed rule I'd complete the game traditionally first.

Every SP game I pick up, I play through it on the hardest difficulty without cheats. Reason for this is because I want to mke the game stretch out as long as possible so I can get my money's worth.
Once the game is beaten and the credits roll, all bets are off. If it still interests me (which also depends, as I tend to shelf almost every game I beat for good unless something really special compels me to keep playing), then I go absolutely fuckin' ham and turn it into my playground. Pretty sure everyone does this.
>multiplayer games
I have no interest in cheating in multiplayer shit. Even the whole "epic lulz XD" shit, for the sake of pissing people off. That's not fun to me.
Two exceptions on this rule, though:

GTA4 and GTAV are fucking notorious for cheats, hacks, all kinds of shit. GTA4, you needed a trainer in order the game to be palatable online, because everyone else had one. If you didn't have one, then you're not going anywhere or doing anything.
In GTAV, R* went full jew with GTA:O cash. I never bothered to load up trainers in GTAV because I learned my lesson in GTA4, in that mods turned the game into an unstable piece of shit. Thankfully, moneydroppers are a dime-a-dozen, and fuck paying real money for fake money. I play the game legitimately, because I think it's fun; but anyone who doesn't play GTAV without hackerbux is a certified sucker.
>exception 2: co-op
Some games, I like to play with a few co-op friends. Depends on the game, but when hosting certain co-op games, I see it similar to being a DM for some D&D. If we're all playing Divinity Original Sin 2 and one of our four guys is struggling, I don't mind using console commands and injecting a little bit of gold to ensure that everyone's having a good time. But has to be pretty sparing, last resort kind of stuff. It's really a contingency to keep any showstoppers from happening, since I want everyone to have a good time, no matter what kind of co-op game I happen to be hosting.

Here is something about cheating you didn't know:
Winning a game by cheating gives more satisfaction to most people than winning legimately. That means, winning + cheating is a better drug for risk taking gambler type of a person ("dopamine addict" not sure if this is even a real thing, TBH). It's not hard to understand, if you think it as a delta-graph of how intense situation is compared to the release of the situation. The situation here being playing a game. Player who cheats has higher stress, and thus bigger "deviation" when the stress drops, and that makes a big difference in dopamine levels. This works mostly in multiplayer games, but some get the boost in single player also. There must be a study about this topic that clarifies this, but I have not seen it, though not really been looking either.
Back to the topic: I modify .ini:s and .xml:s in single player games, to make a game better for me, but I never cheat in multiplayer. I like to play fair, and seeing hacks and exploits sometimes make me drop the game.

I liked to cheat on Dark Souls II (and also III to a lesser extent) so that I didn't have to grind away for hours making new builds for invasions. With soul memory and limited red eye orbs the game was pretty much asking for me to spawn things in, not to mention making a legit new save would take like 30+ hours.

Sunless Sea: Just add 0.2 to basic speed and the game is good again. I mean it. It's that simple.
Durkist Dunges: Just up the "able to carry to "#treasures"100" and suddenly it becomes a better game. Also lower the cost of basic shit like torches, fuck the prices! You own the place!

I've only cheated once, with Ys Seven. The final boss is a big fuck you where you're forced to use all seven characters for the three(technically four) phases, in a game where you're limited to three per party and one of those slots is Adol who is unreplaceable, where non-party characters receive less XP and do not gain skill XP and where every character that isn't Adol plays like absolute ass and are only forced onto you by a gay rock-paper-scissors damage type mechanic that gets negated by Adol's ultimate weapon by the end of the game. Said ultimate weapons require 50 of something called a Soul Stone, which is like a 50-50 drop from resource nodes in the final dungeon that respawn really slowly.
So this boss, phase 1 is you fighting a four headed creature. It slams down two or four of it's heads, either firing four projectiles at diagonals or a slightly homing projectile. The latter is undodgable if all four heads decide to use this ability. You can only hit the heads when they do this attack, not when they do their other, easily dodged attacks that do nothing but waste 10 seconds of your time per attack. These heads have a shitton of HP, and once one of them is down the monster goes into stun mode and you can whittle away at its even larger HP bar(You do this like five times). I should also mention you're locked into a party with the shittiest character in the game, a slow ranged character that has very high cost abilities(only one of them is useful and requires a full bar) and a slow melee character(only one of them is useful and requires a full bar, and also said useful ability takes an eternity to play out where the most damaging part is at the end, so either you don't hit the heads with the most damaging part unless you flashguarded or you lose out on precious stun bar time because it doesn't pause during normal skills, just your Extra skill(ultimate attack)).
Second phase is a boring as fuck projectile boss with the same deal. You wail on it a lot until it gets stunned and then you fuck up the weakpoint. This part is a lot more bearable than the previous because you get a really fast ranged character capable of building up stun gauge and ability gauge as well as a slow melee character who has a really powerful extra skill.
Final phase is actually two. Phase one, dodge attacks from the center while attacking 6 really tanky nodes at the edges of the arena. It's boring and easy to mess up because the center can hit you with a fuck you one hit laser.
Phase 2, you fight the center part supercharged. This is basically the only good part of the fight.
I couldn't bother grinding so I just cheated unlimited extra gauge so I can skip to the final phase.

Typically just to bypass grinding. Usually in the form of removing weight limits in games where you scavenge everything, or giving myself gold. Not actually buffing my stats or any other direct form of cheating like giving myself items I shouldn't have access to yet. That kind of cheating removes the challenge from the game, instead of just mostly getting rid of the grind.

Well i read this whole thread nope-ing at the cheating storiea but then remembered my own. Once upon a time in a galaxy not too far from the present day there was a game called Phantasy Star Online I&II . Its arguably one of the best rpgs to date and I still play its newer title (only avalible in moon rune with patcher).
In pso1&2 there was an item dupe bug where you could convince the game to let you have the shop, the bank, and your inventory open all at the same time, and drop/deposit an item at the same time to make 2.
The game had lots of grindy mechanics, but none as awful as "Mags". They were little robots that seriously boosted your stats and were equipped like gear. After months of perfecting a mag (and ruining countless others, you had to feed it in game items and on a timer, only 3 at a time, and at higher levels, primarily 150+ it got shitty) i duped that fucker and gave it to all my 2 friends that played it so they didnt have to wait around for 300+ hours in game to be able to do content with me.
Also tsumikiri J best weapon fuck that single slash trash sword, a bkb/mkb is fine too.
Fuck that game was good.

If an external program or modification (mods are not inherently cheats obviously but can be) prevents tedium and/or is a quality of life thing I will always use it. This includes crosshair overlays, scripts, other little things that might give a little edge. If a game has an exploit or something where you can get free shit you better believe I'm going in on that too. I don't fuck around with shit that actually gets you banned for a long time, though, unless I'm pretty certain I can get away with it.
Here's pretty much all the reasons I've cheated before if I'm being honest:

It's funny how some devs say you're cheating by unfucking their shit. Remember those colour mods that came out for the yearly CoD a bunch of years back? They made the games actually look nice by adding other colours than grey and brown, and fucking activision declared it cheating because it let you see shit better than vanilla.
Back when MWO was still in beta and fun, I'd run a modified .ini which removed obnoxious fog they added for "balance". AKA giving joystick forumdads a chance against kb+m users by reducing vision to Turok draw distance levels. The map was kind of pretty too, if I was the map designer I would be pissed at what they did to it.

I cheat in MGSV because getting S++ troops and hundreds of thousands of resources required for making advanced security systems and facilities is obviously designed to make you grind for 1000 hours and play the shitty fobs.
Fuck them. I use cheats for 100% chance of godlike S++ troops on the field, each container gives me 999999999 resources and FOBs, weapons, etc are instantly made with no need to wait for the stupid timer.

I save edit in Terraria so I can make cool builds out of bricks that would require several world resets if I wanted the right amount. Also do it for those 0.1% drop items or the fishing quest rewards which you need for some craft recipes. Looking at you cell phone.
I also save edit in Pokemon to get my dream team from the gate so I don't have to spend half the game using shitmons I hate. Adding 999 elixers and pp max to your bag and also cuts out a shit ton of time you'd waste going back and forth to the pokemon center to refill moves.
I use console commands in Morrowind to fill in a lot of the gaps of role playing, like I'll add something to a shopkeeper and pretend I ordered it. More immersive than staring at the wiki and homing in on a specific pair of boots tucked in the corner of an ancestral tomb in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. I'd also console in a lot of furniture items to decorate some of the dungeons I'd clear out to use as homes. In Skyrim I'd often use the console to do absurd shit like spawning in 10 dragons at once to shoot down with infinite magicka. There were also a couple of requiem builds I played that got so good I'd spend some time spawning endgame bosses into the arena just because it felt so good to go all out against them.
Finally porn games. In porn games I cheat like mad for obvious reasons.
I think that as long as you impose limits cheats can actually enhance your experience. You're the only one who can choose to challenge yourself.

In SP I usually only ever do so to undo/neutralise blind mistakes that would take in-game ages to correct, like buying something stupidly expensive in a grindy cash tight world which then turns out to be shitty and there's no way to sell the item or reload a workable save.
