Annoying Vidya Aesthetics
What video game aesthetics trigger your OCD? For me, it's the top-down 3D view mixed with sideways, 2D sprites. I believe the original Legend of Zelda set the stage for this aesthetic, but other games like The Binding of Isaac have adopted it.
It's jarring to me when sprites become improperly oriented with walls and other structures. For example, when link is walking through a door at the bottom of the screen, it looks like he's laying on his back. If you're going to have a top-down view of a level, you need a top-down view of the sprites as well. Otherwise, do it like Gauntlet where all sprites are oriented with the same head-on, 45-degree angle.

I really don't like the 'realism but still cartoony' style, along with the newer graphical techniques like that bitch from Horizon Zero Dawn or something? You're retarded.
In most cases, rixels are a result of a game running at a much higher resolution than the average old game, say 1080p, with sprites scaled up five or six times. Rixels, which are a result of in-engine rotation of pre-scaled sprites, result in pixels in between pixels, in other words, mixels. See my first image >>16015705 again up-close. The first image is how a rotated sprite would look in that resolution. The second creates much smaller pixels than it should. A very simple way to avoid this is to render a game in a low resolution, then scale the whole screen up, but most indie devs are hacks.
It's not sprite rotation that's the problem. It's how they're rotated that breaks the very core limitations of consoles.
It's the same thing with mixels, too. Many consoles, and especially home computers like the C64, utilized sprite scaling quite extensively, or used double wide pixels to get more colors, and so on. But in most cases, mixels are a result of lack of giving a shit, not an imitation of style limitations. It's usually shit like Celeste, where the pixel art is scaled up six times at 1080p, yet the font, text boxes and portraits are normal-sized, and the fonts are aliased like any other modern game.

NES Remix has given me a greater appreciate for that style in recent years, the boot up screen composed of all the square/rectangle close ups of the characters sprites looks really nice together, would have been good for poster art.

>zany idea of nintendo characters from different franchises beating eachother
This is one of the things Icons doesn't get, Smash was about Nintendo characters first and then adapting attacks/fighting style based off their own games.
At the same time since they used pre-existing characters it means that they don't have to worry about MUH DIVERSITY. SSB64 got away with 1 human woman who you couldn't even see under the armour and with Ultimate still doesn't have to worry about having a black man rep or something because it's just a crossover.
While Icons is like this character plays like Falcon but as a black woman! Here's a goat critter whose Fox! Ice Climbers but they are magic statue creatures who can activate/inactivate one at a time! I'll admit that last one sounds kinda interesting
Icons would have been better asking questions like how would Simon Belmont play in Smash (or other characters that had yet to be announced for Ultimate at the time) and then go from there. Imagine if they could have come up with something like Bowser but in Peach's body type?
Or something truly crazy stupid like a pith helmet wearing centuar who duel wields nunchucks and whose back legs are paralysed so he uses a wheelchair with buzzsaws for wheels. He's a hungry old fighter who just wants to eat the 1st prize trophy because someone tricked him into thinking it was chocolate wrapped in gold foil.

I for one like the style. There are some that definitely get it wrong, but essentially it's western equivalent to "3d anime". Just like anime, it's relatively simple to produce and the flat colors and limited detail hide a lot of imperfections.
Consider Overwatch. You know how everyone here always says it's only good for the porn? The only reason it's good for porn at all is because (some of) the characters manage to be (somewhat) attractive, and the only way that a western developer can manage to do that is with this artstyle.

Tabletop is entirely depended on the intelligence and charisma of who you are playing with. The Genre when translated into the digital medium loses its humanity and the failed attempt to emulate that experience is falls on the writing staff. The amounts of iteration required to properly simulate real interactions is innumerable and the cost of development is is prohibitive. Moreover, the act of story telling is in conflict with the core nature of gameplay. Compound those issues with crippling proscriptions of a half baked political ideology and you have a recipe for disaster.
Making a RPG that is authentic to Tabletop is has alot in common with the meme of open world sandbox procedural generation. Both are also closely tied to Trans-humanist dreams of creating a matrix or holodeck to escape into. On an engineering level these things are interesting and worth investing into R&D but they don't make for fun game experiences. These projects are often driven by mentally ill men who want to cut off their dicks and larp as women.
Also Chris Avellone is a hack and Planescape torment is overrated garbage and the "Golden" age of Western RPG's was a meme because even the infinity engine games where lackluster when it came to core game play mechanics. Infinity engine was propped up by the writing and that kind of experience does not lend itself to huge grand adventures and works much better in confined environments. That is why fallout 1 and its small scope despite the engine limitations is in respect to actual "Roll playing" the only truly fully successful RPG. In this regard Warren Spector had the right idea when he talked about the Ideal "One City Block" RPG.

Poisonous water elementals.. so immune to nature damage. "Electric" attacks are either considered nature or arcane damage (so I am going to assume that you attempted to attack a poisonous water elemental with lightning bolt or whatever it was called, a shaman ability of some sort). "Earth based" interrupts are nature. There's only 6 types of magic in ye olde vanilla WoW (nu-WoW lets anyone attack anything, no more fire elementals being immune to fire). The 6 types being: Fire, Frost, Arcane, Nature, Shadow, and Holy. All can be resisted by players, except holy (which can only be resisted if you're a higher level than the enemy attacking or absorbed with general damage shields, alternatively there is a potion that provides a shield specifically against holy damage). Certain mobs are immune to certain types of magic, though none are immune to holy except that one boss in Blackwing Lair, Chromaggus, I think. He is not specifically immune to anything, he shifts what he's immune to after getting attacked by magic of some kind. Really, your problem is that blizzard didn't put in more damage types. Instead of making poisons their own thing, they lumped it in as "nature damage", and electric attacks are usually nature damage.. so because of this lack of granularity, envenomed daggers and balls of electricity are resisted entirely by the same mob (when only the envenomed daggers should be resisted entirely).

Pixels are actually a grid on a screen you faggot, not some arbitrary unit of square measurement. It's impossible on old screens to render an image that isn't made up of visible squares. Modern screens have way more pixels and higher resolution to the point where "pixels" have colloquially become an artstyle rather than a technical measurement of your screen size. The games looked that way because of the displays they were designed for and hardware limitations at the time. Making a pixel art game with rixels is like making a traditional English fruitcake, and then pouring sugar icing and Hersheys chocolate syrup all over it. You ruined the entire point of the exercise, which was to preserve an older style, by mixing it with new things that make it look/taste like total shit.

Something that bothers me also from sci-fi is that the fucking aliens never look like aliens. They only come in lanky tall dude, beefy tall dude, beefy short dude, generically hot alien girls or regular ass human with shit stuck to their face. This may be pretty autistic of me but fucking god damn, do the assholes who design this shit know what evolutionary ecology is?
>Hey so even though the human form is optimized for a specific hunting-gatherer niche with emphasis on long distance running lets make every single alien anthropomorphic since we suck dicks
God forbid that you cunts are actually creative. Can't have shit like sentient starfish that constantly need a specific liquid in order to move, can't have a race of cephalopod like creatures that comunicate through colors, can't have a civilization made up entirely of slime mold people who can merge together sharing minds, can't have a race of sentient trees whose reproductive phase is mobile and the adult is sessile. Yes, all this shit already exists on earth, but that makes it more infuriating: you can look out the fucking window and see how varied life is but you can't even be arsed to design something even slightly less human. Oh and of course, they are all able to speak, even though here on earth you have everything for sound communication to direct cell to cell communication between species.
I'm not even going to talk about the biochemistry of alien lifeforms since they inevitably have:
>the ability to survive in an oxidizing atmosphere
>posess DNA
>can live comfortably in 1 atm of pressure
>even though the above would be miraculous if found in a real alien, fiction aliens have some dumbass ability like being able to make capuccinos appear out of thin air or some shit
At least mass effect tried something by mentioning that there's races with differing chiralities of aminoacids and sugars, but the problem really is how the fuck do they use aminoacids and sugars in the first place. Oh, okay, so your planet also just happened to develop carbon based life, complete with DNA, RNA and Protein translation, but juuust so happens that you guys use β-L-glucose and D-tyrosine instead? I'll give you everything about most aliens being lazy recolors of humans, but I don't honestly know what you're expecting from the biochemistry angle. I get the standard earth atmosphere and pressure part of the complaint, but what exactly is your complaint about the chirality? What are you asking for? Do you want the writers to detail an entirely different system of organic molecules made of bullshit arrangements of elements? Do you want the writers to detail a lipid based form of genetic information, or do you want something along the line of "It's a silicon based life form" shit, with it either being a computer or basically just swapping carbon with silicon as the backbone of "organic" molecules?
I'd expect every form of vaguely functional alien life to have some sort of versatile compact building blocks for it's genetic information and functional macro-molecules. I get the want for a more in depth focus on alien physiology and biochemistry, but there's no way in hell someone is going to be autistic enough or have enough time and funding to attempt to thoroughly detail a nonexistent system of biochemicals for every single alien race in a game. We'd probably still end up with vague hollow explanations of how alien life works, a clusterfuck of poorly thought out novel concepts mashed together, or a game with a tiny number of alien species.
I understand what you're saying, but I don't think there's much hope of getting a lot of this without generic mystery bio-chemical shenanigans.

I feel like the terminals in Halo, the books in Bayonetta, and the libraries in just about any good RPG disprove you on that one. Though, that's also the part that people seem to miss: majority of people don't give a shit about this stuff. Yeah, reading all the caveats of how things work is a nice "bonus" to for people who like to delve deeper into the universe, but most don't care as long as the gameplay is good and the story is enjoyable. Heck, sometimes it's better if you DON'T explain everything because people like getting lost in a world of "endless wonder" and it loses some of it's fantastical and mysterious properties when someone writes, in every autistic detail, how what you see happening is "physically possible".
You want to know reasons why scientists are the biggest sticks in the mud when it comes to fiction? It's because they want everything to be accurate, but most don't care as evidenced by how George Lucas was able to make billions with light sabers and dinosaurs still appear as inaccurately as they were 25 years ago.

I think part of the reason Smash works is because it's a crossover, unless you make another platform fighter using different crossover characters it doesn't really have much appeal, because then you are basically pandering to the Smash crowd but without the "legacy" or fanbase for the established characters. The "hype" before a new Smash comes out over it's newcomers creates more discussion than the game after it's released.
For comparison Brawlout has a mix of original and indie characters while Slap City uses just the Lumosity characters

It has to be said. Blame Star Trek/Sci-Fi TV series for the humanoid aliens. While games like Mass Effect has excuse of the Unreal Engine only accepting humanoid/biped playable characters. Though this bring up questions of not trying to use some programming tricks like using an invisible humanoid with a multi limbed alien on the outside of it. If Fallout's Gamebyro engine can make train from a running NPC wearing a train carriage for a hat why can't that be done with Unreal?
It's no wonder why games like Star Control feature tons of crazy alien designs since it uses portraits.
