I honestly am less interested with each update. The last time I gave a heck was before all the moonlord post game nonsense. Looking at these upcoming features and it seems to all be cosmetic.
I mean I think it is great that they are continuing to develop it and, judging by the change notes, are focused on listening to their hardcore fans and giving them what they want. Really though it just isn't that interesting for me anymore.

Alternate hardmode maybe. Instead of beating the WoF have an alternative boss that causes hardmode to generate in a completely different fashion. That way they wouldn't fuck up their current game progression and they would have almost unlimited room for innovation.

A completely separate gamemode could work as well, something where the world generates/progresses differently. For example what if the whole world generated like a giant dungeon, with different biomes that have different structure and enemies, and doors that require keys to open.

This is quick and dirty but a very effective strategy. Maybe generate another Hardmode biome to antagonize the world evil, since there's only the Hallow but there's two evils.
Well, since the Corruption is the world rotting and its counterpart is the Hallow, which is this saccharine world of raibows, the Crimson's theme of mutation should be something like the Ancient or something. An area where life hasn't evolved since it started, filled with primordial versions of animals. Think something of a prehistorical wonderland, filled with therapsids, giant sloths, giant bugs, etc.
>>16015026

There are different worlds, as opposed to just biomes that are all different. If Terraria had "seasons" that changed the same area into something different, I'd love it. But this isn't about what I'd like to see, but what I actually like in Starbound vs Terraria.
I never liked the progression needed for boss battles Terraria had. I don't like how you have to craft items to summon a boss, which you need to build a stage to fight said boss in. In Starbound, the bosses are their own separate world spaces. This is a rather weak point, I know, especially considering that Starbound has that godawful story mode now. Keep in mind I'm not putting my best foot forward, I'll fully admit this is all subjective and if broken down terraria is the "superior game".
I enjoy the mystery meat creatures that appear in Starbound, and how you will find that the certain races of Starbound will terriform planets they are on. I'm not a fan of the dwarves and medieval theme. I don't like the glitch in Starbound for the same reason.
I enjoy the mods for Starbound more. Frackin universe and the extended++ mod series are amazing additions.
I enjoy playing Starbound more. It's not something that's easy to explain. It's the same premise as someone liking Dr robotniks mean bean machine over columns or any of the other many puzzle games. Just because something is better by all means, doesn't mean you will enjoy it more than something else.
I like Starbound, I like space, I like turning on some trance music and tunnelling to the core of an ice giant, before flying my ship to an ocean planet to harvest coconut trees.
I also love the idea of their being infinite worlds, many of which having no life on them, and building houses on them which no government, man, or beast can regulate.

This sounds like a marketing team wrote it. If you've actually played Starbound then it sounds even more so because you know it's a lot more shallow than that. You're describing a 100 mile wide puddle as a vast ocean.

I hope so. It would make the most sense even though Re-Logic said a couple of years ago that they had no plans to expand the throwing class. Of course that was before Otherworld imploded so their plans may have changed.
It would be the easiest thing in the world to implement. There are a few weapons like the scourge of the corrupter and the daybreak could be transferred over to throwing just as they are. Maybe boomerangs too.

>a lot of Terraria's mechanics are very simplistic and it can't really change them significantly at this point
It's kind of weird, Starbound had a better system for melee combat than Terraria, on the basic mechanical level, but Starbound's combat ended up being much worse anyway. Starbound lacked mobility progression so you only ever become slightly more mobile in combat than at the base game (double jumps and a short dash), had awful ranged combat with no variety, and despite having a better melee combat system mechanically at its basic level (having shields and a blocking system, a dual wielding system which also allowed for utility stuff like medkits and flashlights in the off hand, secondary attacks, combos instead of repeating the same overhead swing infinitely, and charged attacks on its hammers/axes) it still ended up being the same "hold M1 to spam attacks until the enemy dies, hope knockback keeps it far enough away" combat Terraria has for early game melee, except in Starbound that's the combat for the whole game - spears are awful, secondary attacks tend to be useless, hammers/axes suck and feel unfun to use. Dual wielding is just stacking DPS so it doesn't feel any different than a 2-handed weapon or Terraria except that you hold M1 and M2 instead of just M1, and using the off hand for anything else, like a shield, cuts your damage output in half with minimal benefit, outside of a flashlight. And ranged combat in Starbound just sucks because it uses a sort of mana system, like Terraria's magic, except without any of the variety that comes with Terraria's magic weapons - it's almost all just regular guns, with the occasional rocket/grenade launcher, and without the fun ammo types. Only a randomly assigned elemental effect on some of them, or plain bullets on the majority.

If Terraria 2 gets an enhanced combat system, its gonna need better fitting bosses to go along with it, too. A big problem with the current state is that the bosses and enemies alike all deal contact damage and the bosses end up being too fast and immune to knockback so pure melee attacks are rendered useless pretty quickly with them. I really hope that Terraria 2's bosses are designed around being blockable or something, even a simple system where you can stun bosses with well-timed blocks or dodge attacks to make opportunities to melee them would go a long way in making that playstyle viable and more engaging.
Admittedly, it would probably look ridiculous blocking massive monsters with a tiny shield so at the least having some kinda dodging system would be nice, but I'm not sure how you would go about balancing bosses so that they're equally challenging for all playstyles.

Alternatively it could move closer to a concert system similar to that of that 2d soulsborne mimic, which would be cool but would require fundimentally alteration to the other mechanics in the game in order to compensate for the change in combat.

I never actually played past the first 'boss' on Starbound to be honest, so I'm not sure how much they compare; I don't think Starbound had terrible combat or anything, but the enemies were boring and I hated how they made ranged require MP to use.
Anyway, I just hope they find a way to make melee usable throughout the game so we don't get the nonsense where melee weapons all just turn into ranged ones once you hit hardmode

The only thing clusterfucky about Thorium is the ridiculous amount of NPCs they added, all of which are early game. It forces you to build a lot more early on than most players would probably want to.
NPCs are already a clusterfuck as it is, and most of them are redundant in some way. One thing that could/should have been done differently was how shopping worked. Instead of every individual NPC having their own item shop, it should have been one or two main Merchants whose inventory grows/changes depending on which NPCs have arrived alive.

Starbound suffers from overall shit game design. To start with nothing feels satisfying because hitting an enemy rarely gives proper feedback, it just does slapping and clinking sounds and eventually the enemy drops shit and disappears. Terraria's sound effects feel more satisfying to land and the enemies get knocked around by your hits and then explode on the killing shot, not to mention they give actually useful items instead of just some shitty currency and maybe at best one of several generic crafting items that are shared by most enemies.
Since they're obsessed with making everything take up energy, the game needs to be slower and more methodological and mechanically elaborate in order to work. But the slower you make it, the more it begins to conflict with the idea of combing through infinite bland worlds for generated structures (see: the only worthwhile thing in the planets). I recall the jumps feeling out of place as well for being so high, but if you make them lower you need to add ledge grabs or something. Shields are rarely actually useful from what I recall not to mention having a tiny and vague hitbox and never making it clear what can be blocked and what can't. There's some interesting weapon types but the only weapons you'll end up using are the strongest generic sword and generic gun that you can get your hands on until you find Magnorbs and never use anything else again.
To make matters worse the AI itself turns everything into a meaningless slapfight, I never felt like there was a proper exchange of moves in combat, not that the RNG terrain makes it very easy to do it anyway. It's also not satisfying to have elaborate fights against unmemorable colorful blobs, interesting enemies are a big part of good combat. I don't think they're randomly generated anymore but they're still not interesting at all, perhaps in part because they don't have any kind of special context to exist in, other than the planet type.
It's like they had some ideas of what a good system should have but had no idea how to make use of them or put them together into a satisfying whole.

I like to play new game runs with online friends and do a "Class" system where everyone picks and sticks to a class for the entire playthrough, usually one they hadn't tried before. Pic related is a good example of replaying the game.
Unfortunately, when playing online with others it's either I build everything or we wind up with a horrible ghetto-looking base that makes invasion events incredibly unfun, inefficient, and they take forever to end. Not to mention the nightmare of filling in "holes" right underneath the base for about 300 or so blocks so mobs don't get stuck underground and unkillable. Sieges aren't fun if there's no challenge or risk because of exploiting the AI pathing. If you try this make sure people don't bring in equipment they're not supposed to have yet, it's no fun if people smuggle in weapons.
I think the last thing I came up with an idea for was trying an open world team PVP campaign game where you compete in upgrading your shit/killing bosses/each other.
Terraria is probably the only game I've done the "now play through a different way from the start" thing.

You're gonna want something better than a Beam Sword. Amarok is a bit better, but if you have a Hel-fire make sure you've got a yoyo bag.
I always just make a little cage and rain down shit on top of the Destroyer. Nimbus Rod, Daedalus Stormbow, and Meteor Staff (with mana regeneration potion) all work well. You can also set up some un-bombable ores underneath your cage and rain down dynamite on it.
Once you kill the Destroyer you can make a Megashark, which is pretty ideal for fighting the Twins. I always use gravitation potions for the Twins because I find trying to dodge the cursed flames too difficult otherwise. Not sure how you're outrunning them at this stage unless it's a unicorn mount.
There's a lot of ways to tackle Skeletron Prime but the important part is a nice set of platforms to jump up and down around.

Make a big multi-leveled pit below your platform and fill it up with spike balls and such on each level. As the worm passes through the platforms, each spike will hit him once for each body part. Not all randomness has to be completely random. The "player's choice" result only comes up for one of the three things, which is an optional side objective that you don't *HAVE* to complete. Set out with an idea: build a mini Lizahrd temple on the surface, for example. Whether you do or don't doesn't matter, it's optional.
Everything else is mandatory, but the idea of a player's choice for a secondary objective that doesn't matter, well who fucking cares. You're only trying to achieve the common goal in the end anyway. Beat the game as your class with a settlement in the right biome. Which by the way, fucking stupid as hell if your biome is uninhabitable (like trying to live in a Mushroom biome once hardmode hits).

So, idea for a mod
>you somehow have the ability to put points into various classes up to a given maximum (melee, ranger, mage, more if needed)
>gear has stat requirements to use, beginner trash doesn't but anything that's any good does
>each point in a class confers certain advantages passively, ex: melee gives an increasing %damage reduction
>Because there's an upper limit, you can multi-class but it will result in top-end gear being locked out to you (requirements would have to scale nonlinearly so multiclassed characters aren't totally fucked in the lategame)
>Additionally, armor bonuses are reduced or eliminated, only very rare or unique sets have class effects, but the stats of armor are more significantly different between classes
>Mage is reworked so mana is no longer a thing, instead magic weapons have cooldowns which reduce heavily once you get more points into the skill tree
>alchemy is available to everyone, not affected
>possibly add advanced classes, ex: once you get halfway through mage you can unlock summoner which gives bonuses to number of summons and summon damage, but lacks the cast speed reduction
Just an idea, but would make for a slightly more interesting game I think. While the combat would still be really simplistic, not being able to swap classes on the fly or just be the best at everything would mean replaying and making a choice to be a different class would matter more

These kinds of solutions are basically the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig. They don't deal with the underlying problem, which is that close-quarters combat in Terraria is so dangerous to the point of effectively not being skill-based. You find the same approach often in Euroshmups. Terraria needs serious changes to enemy design and the introduction of more melee-oriented mechanics such as rolls or damage-nullifying guarding in order to address the fundemantel underlying problem. Perhaps it's a game that never should have had melee (at least beyond the equipment several hours after starting) to begin with.

I don't think melee is unsalvageable, even without redoing anything other than melee itself.
The key is to extend the weapon range without making it feel like you're shooting shit. Think of the classic sword slash effect, it greatly extends your range but isn't a projectile and still passes as a sword swing. Take that idea and bend it around in various ways for various melee weapons. Especially spears could have a very long stab effect.
The punching glove and golem fist are other good ideas for extending melee range. Flails also work very well. The problem with these weapons is that they're so damn underpowered compared to ranged weapons, they just need an overall buff. Just take weapons that have a long potential reach and use them for melee weapons. What about a chain sickle that makes a very long overhead curve and ends up at your cursor, or a whip that's like solar eruption except it "explodes" at the very end of it's reach and does much lesser damage otherwise.
The ichor sword and mushroom spear have very good melee-like special effects. Especially the "spawn shit/cause effect when enemy is hit" should be in most melee weapons.
731ce3 No.16027706
Actually Daybreak has an interesting idea aswell; if you hit the enemy it will keep taking damage for a short while afterwards. That could compensate for the fact that the enemy may be out of reach for a moment.

I haven't got very far with it, but looking at the stats, you can run multi-class in a way since stats have some overlap with what they effect, although it doesn't have armor restrictions of any sort.
To be honest its a pain in the ass to start a game with that mod since you start with negative damage bonuses and the only way to level up in the beginning is mining, plus I think that even though the bosses have higher stats to go with the mod it may get really unbalanced later on. I'm on expert and so far it doesn't seem too broken but I'll try play through it fully, and like the other anon said it at least makes for some kind of interesting playthrough
>>16027601

That's what I would like to see changed, too. Also the fact that 90% of the hard mode bosses fly around and that combat on the ground has a weird 'friction' to it doesn't help either; The minute they decided people could have wings is probably where true melee weapons became useless.

First, the only reason it does anything at all is because of the ranged/magic effect. That's the cheater solution to the "melee problem". Melee weapons suck? Just turn them into ranged weapons then lol
Beyond that, I'm not sold on it being the highest. It definitely doesn't outperform the Last Prism in boss quick-kills. Whether that's because the DPS is lower or it just takes to long for the pumpkins to start hitting I don't know. Should be really nice underground against multiple enemies though, since they switch targets and travel through walls

However, for the first ~80% of the game that isn't a problem. Things like the Arkhalis and Fetid Baghnakhs are exactly the opposite, being insanely short range weapons. Flails on the other hand have more reach but something about the way they work still seems fundamentally melee to me.
Your weapon selection should change as you play the game. Melee early game, ranged late game, with some overlap in the middle seems like a fine balance to me.

The sheer incompetence of Starbounds design is frustrating, because theres a kernel of a good idea burried underneath it all, if you try the Frackin Universe mod you can get a glimpse of what the game could have been like if the developers werent soy guzzling retards. Among other things that mod adds a huge amount of new terrain types, many of which are severely hostile to the player and require proper gear just to explore, and theres some fun to be had actually gearing up and getting to explore those places, but thats the limit of it, it devloves into a slog after that, and the Frackin' U developers are massive crafting autists so actually creating the gear you need to explore even the most basic of hostile planets will involve 6 or 7 different crafting stations and 20 different materials so you can expect to sit on you ass building a fucking laboratory for most of the game.
>Since they're obsessed with making everything take up energy
This shit right here killed the game dead, especially the ranged combat. Every gun and bow in the game shares an identical "reload" time making any weapon with burst damage straight up better than any other weapons, since there was no meaningful distinction between them other than one does more damage over time and one does more instantly, either way you'll end up spending the same amount of downtime not doing any damage because youre waiting for your energy to recharge. You feel completely powerless during this downtime because youre sitting there with your thumb up your ass waiting for your energy pool to recharge, and its not like you can just switch to another gun, it shares the same resource pool. In better designed games you either at least have the agency of pressing a button to reload and can thus feel like youre doing something or dont have to worry about that shit at all because the weapons have their own resource pool, theres no reloading, you just have to control your supply. Then you have to factor in that techs and other things also consume energy and the fact that melee weapons across the board do far more damage than ranged, and have no limiting resource that prevent you from using them, and theres just no reason at all to ever use firearms,

Even that can go badly depending on the game. Most of the big genres like FPS, RPG, etc can suffer from RNG maps; it fucks with the atmosphere, and can really fuck with the pacing. The ways to avoid that is to either have an extremely abstract map so the brain doesn't pick up the pattern nearly as easily as a slotted together series of 3D maps, have the player be pulled back far enough such that it isn't an issue like in a 4x, or for the game to be focused on the player altering the map in some way shape or form, like a city builder.

I almost bet that how you will acquire them will be that they're sold from the Demolitionist while in a desert biome after Skeletron is defeated or something like that. Unless we end up with a desert merchant of some kind.

Seriously why would anyone waste their adamantite or titanium bars on this piece of shit? It sucks at being a good magic armor and it sucks at being a good minion armor. I still remember the good old days where the underworld was the final frontier. Ash blocks dropped to the ground while mining, trapping you in a cramped space where lava slimes and imps spawned relentlessly. Mineshafts crumbling at every block you take while slimes spawned pools of lava every time they died to completely fuck you when trying to dig or build. Great memories man, wonder if there's a download for that version of the game out there

Some kind of "brutal" extra difficulty to add onto expert would be pretty neat and I'm sure people have tons of great ideas for it but judging by how slow the update releases have been lately it might be too much to ask for. I would kill for a difficulty where enemies can completely wreck your base if left undefended though.

All of them.
It would be meaningless anyway if you could go to the spawn to avoid getting your base in danger.

They need to stop supporting this game and move on to a sequel or fully updated version or something; the current engine has become way too bloated and coupled with its limitations it is only becoming harder and harder to mod

That's really strange. I know for a fact that I have this one world where the Witch Doctor is way to the right in the jungle, almost to the beach, and the Martians spawn on top of him when I'm away from base. And I've got another world where I moved the Nurse away from base so I could farm martians safely. If she dies they stop spawning at my arena.
>>16060167
>They need to stop supporting this game
No.
>the current engine has become way too bloated
That's part of what this update is about, fixing the engine.

That's not really the dev's problem.

Shallow combat, unrewarding dungeons that consist of maybe 2-3 rooms if you're lucky, no reason to actually dig into a planet, fucking protected objects and dungeons in the base god damn game, and so on. Game was rushed despite having all that kikestarter scam money and being in development for so long, Tiy is a fag and a conartist.

Starbound's combat is fun with mods. Melee is trash, despite some of the special attacks being neat to use.

It's about equal IMO; Terraria has a better early game, but Starbound has better mid-game.

It's still more fun than ranged, considering every single ranged weapon uses the same energy meter, that you use for movement abilities, as ammo.

Stamina systems are very common in action games. I do think the default cooldown before regenerating stamina is too long, but it becomes less of an issue once you increase your stamina pool.

Wrong. Only the sphere mode and sprint use energy and all other movement abilities are free.

But they're also usually well thought-out and implemented, and used in a way that makes sense. Starbound's system is just a lazy excuse for chucklefucks to not design and balance an ammo system. It's as badly designed as most of Starbound.
