The problem is, when you neuter the gameplay mechanics of PM and get Sticker Star or Color Splash, what's the point? If those two games aren't RPGs, then what are they? At least SPM had a deep story, memorable characters and unique gameplay. SS and CS have nothing. They fail as RPGs, as story-driven adventures, as action games, and as puzzle-solving games.

I have you covered anon. For the record, the bitch said at 3:00 and at 6:50:
>Gamexplain: "Something fans noted about Sticker Star is that it focused primarily on traditional mushroom kingdom characters and that there was a lack of new characters. So can we expect to see any new characters in Color Splash, or is it focused more on the mushroom kingdom again?"
>Risa Tabata: "You'll see lots and lots of Toads, but as you talk to them you realize 'oh, these are all completely different people!'. Like, even if you see one Toad in town, and then, when you meet that Toad in another place, you'll know they're the same Toad because of the way they talk and what they talk about."
>Gamexplain: "Will Color Splash include any traditional RPG elements like the first two Paper Mario games?"
>Risa Tabata: "So you know about the Mario and Luigi games, right? So since we already have that series of games that's more of a straight up RPG, we feel like it would be a shame if we weren't doing something that was more different and that was giving something to the customers. And I think that what people like about those original Paper Mario games was, as you say, the RPG elements, but there was also the colorful characters, the puzzle solving, and the humor. So in the new games we're focusing more on the puzzle solving aspects and the humor"

The depressing part about this shit is that no one complained about having M&L and PM coexist as RPG Mario games, no one complained about "too many Mario RPGs". Part of the reason they were probably allowed to coexist would have been their console vs handheld platform separation and then the 3DS ended that with PM:SS.
What's annoying about this ''only one Mario RPG series can exist" idea is that why didn't Nintendo apply it to other genres? Why was ExciteTruck and DK Jungle Racer allowed to exist when they had Mario Kart?

So are the sales of Metroid and Star Fox, but they still pulled those out of their asses. Pikmin never sold, and they made a third one. Sales are only an argument when they're good, hencewhy Nintendo can have three corresponding platformers at the same time - at least two of them were Wii U best sellers.
If Nintendo suddenly decided that they NEED a 30 player racing game to show off online, or whatever other reason, they'd make an F-Zero, and past failures would not dissuade them. They simply don't see a need for it, because in their mind, they already have an online multiplayer racing game.

Paper Mario is an RPG that gets rid of RNG like accuracy and evasion in favor of action command input for the most part. Some badges are RNG based like Close Call avoiding attacks half the time when HP is 5 or less. Paper Mario is still an RPG in stats and strategy. The fact that Potato Motor wanted to get rid of the story in favor of making the game an action trading card game is just sad. Since there's no handheld/console split with the Switch, I don't have hopes for a new Paper Mario game being good. That is unless Fire Emblem Mary Sue whore can fuck off from directing Paper Mario.

>>16021623
>the battle system, whats wrong with it exactly?
I played Sticker Star. Let me give you a run-down of exactly why it's bullshit.
For one, the stickers/cards are your ONLY form of offense. Basic things like jumping and hammering, which Mario could do at all times in previous games, are restricted to single-use items. You run out, you're fucked and have to run. Not only that, you're playing inventory management due to the fact that attacks/items are. The biggest space eaters are the "Things" (real-life object turned into stickers/cards) that act as special attacks AND are usually mandatory to complete some puzzle on the Overworld. Likewise, you have to FIND Things on the overworld then run back to the hub world to turn them into stickers, then run back where the game wants you to use them.
Then there's the lack of incentive to actually fight. Mario earns EXP or levels up outside of like getting more HP at specific points. Your only reward for fighting is coins to buy stickers/cards, but the level already gives you more than enough stickers just by going through a level. In other words, there's no good reason to fight enemies; it's just a waste of resources you could be saving for important shit like bosses, mandatory encounters, or puzzles.
The bosses aren't even fights. They have exactly 1 path to victory: have the specific Thing in your inventory, then they're crippled for the rest of the fight. If you don't have it, you die no questions asked. It doesn't really give you many hints as to what you're supposed to bring to the fight either (Pokey only gives you a brief overview of the arena in the cutscene right before the fight and you're supposed notice it looks like a Baseball Diamond. Except you can't run back to get a Baseball Bat sticker because you're fighting him right now. Enjoy getting spammed with Crumpled status), if they give you any hints at all. Bowser at the end has several Thing-Check phases during the first part of the fight (the second's just a scripted segment where Kersti fake-sacrifices herself to let you hurt Cardboard Bowser). There's no challenge or strategy involved; it's just "have this or you lose. If you do, you win".
All the while, the game's writing is rubbing the fact that DUDE WE'RE MADE OF PAPER LMAO in your face, Bowser is completely silent as an antagonist after being the best thing in Paper Mario, you're getting yelled at by some sticker-fairy bitch, the plot's just "Peach is kidnapped, go rescue her" without trying to flesh it out like 64 did, the level aesthetics are ripped wholesale from New Super Mario Bros, and there's exactly one unique NPC out of hundreds but Toads who have nothing but color to differentiate them.
It's uncharismatic, tedious, and unchallenging. I haven't even played your "Slay the Spire" and I'm certain it does card RPG better than nu-Paper Mario does.

I've always had this idea for a Toad themed RPG called Toad Town where you play as a customizable Toad that explores different randomly generated top-down dungeons. The Dungeons would be focused on puzzle solving and stealth as well as befriending the creatures of the caverns to help solve problems. You'd spend the coins and treasure you'd find in these dungeons on accessories for your avatar or items for your customizable toad house (which other players could visit). The game would be a mix of Animal Crossing, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Pokemon Ranger.
