Black Company is regarded as one of the classics of its time. It's pretty old, but if you like the idea of "professional soldiering WHOOPS WE SERVE THE EVIL OVERLORD" it's actually very fun. Has a cool narrative framing of the military company's annalist and chronicler being the main character.

So heres the deal, there's a skill a skill called DASH in the game that lets you move at basically 2-3x normal speed You can start the game knowing this skill if you chose RUSH STRAIGHT AHEAD.

You can learn it from books or you can use a blank scroll to teach it to yourself if you got bad RNG book wise

If it isn't apparent gaining access to the save system is based on chance until you deal with the boss Crow Mauler. Once you've taken care of him you can save at the bed anytime without worry. Saving is something you have to earn. If you want tips on beating CM, I can give them to you.

When most of the game is left to RNG the game feels almost entirely out of your control, it's not satisfying and it isn't difficult, it's bullshit like I said in my original post. I've got grounds to believe I'm correct, too, since the dev himself (posts as orange~ or something like that) has admitted that the RNG is bullshit and will be toning it down in future versions.

I could go on but too much of the game is RNG. The moment I push any interaction button the game is no longer in my control. I can know that cutting off the jailer's arm is the best way to start, but if I MISS then my run is over. I can know that kiting is effective to avoid the flip kills, but if I fail to escape my run is over. I cut off the priests lantern arm so I can safely fight him, but I have to DPS him down or escape before he chants or my run is over. If he hits me with the lantern Im on fire and my health will burn to abysmal levels, effectively ending my run.

Fine, I explore and figure out where to find herbs and foods and those weird bunny fuckers and all kinds of shit, but it doesn't change the fact that the majority of my deaths are incredibly unsatisfying "HEADS/TAILS? Oh tough shit you gambled wrong see you at your last save point" moments, or situations where the enemy landed a single hit and I lost a limb. The game desperately wants you to learn through trial and error, but nearly every error is up to a coin toss and completely erases all your progress.

Look, I like the atmosphere and when the dev tones down the RNG I'll definitely be trying this game again but the game right now is awful. Comparing it to dark souls is apples/oranges btw, DS was reasonably easy. If you paid attention to what you were doing you could handle what you encountered pretty easily. The game doesn't cheat by taking all the control away from the player and making them flip a coin 18 times per playthrough.

The layout of the dungeon is randomized to the extent that it has 2-3 preset layouts for any given "level" or "area" I guess, some are exactly the same. Nothing too over the top like complete random generation. The items and drops of things are different every time but are fairly even, though on my first run I got a shit ton of ale and on my second I had a fuck ton of Tabacoo and nothing to smoke it with so theres that.

Theres a book that has like a 90% chance to spawn in the starting library that lists all of Icons meaning, I think its the Anathoma if I'm not mistaken? Its like the Book of Fears you can find at the start which explains all the phobias. Worm Juice says in the description that its a moderate poison to clear out parasites, so what you have now is a minor poisoning. The game isn't a true-rogue like per say but some things you just find out the good old fashion way of making mistakes. I guess what I'm saying is Yes to trail and error, but also not definitively trail and error for everything.

Pro-Tip:Not all engagements are worth fighting, but every enemy has a weakness where you can avoid the all or most of the punishment. Discovering those weaknesses and methods is part of the fun

Mainly for the lore reasons concerning the way they frame gods so far outside of standard yet familiar reference points. I just beat Crow Mauler after taking a break, was not easy. I lost my ghoul but thats no big deal as he seemed worthless anyway. For me as the Edge Preist i just kept hitting him in the head with Pyromancy and Hurting until his head popped. This was after i cut off his arm mauler arm though. I got real lucky though because he kept trying to peck my skeleton bro after the ghoul died and apparently peck does nothing to the skeleton, so after i got his arm the rest was kinda easy or easier than dying instantly.

The grab is on their second turn and if you miss and fail to run you're double fucked. Its not just the tutorial level, its the place you visit every time you fuck up and die at some other point and can't save because of the Crow Mauler. Its not about being too hard, it isn't, but about shit design based around RNG at every fucking step of the game. At every bookshelf and chest you open its a memeflip where even if you win it you roll for what you get. Some books are a complete game changer that early on; like if you get the whispers of healing or a blank scroll. That stuff is completely in-place with a roguelike but when you're search is limited you can either be broken or gimped and its decided in the first thirty minutes of gameplay and its decided by your flips and the loot tables.

every single game in existance has elements of RNG, do you think the Bosses in Demon Souls just fought in a loop or did they have a random selection of attacks mixed in with predictable attacks?

The RNG out of combat like books and treasure chests are RNG so every game is different, i havent been ridiculously favored either but i felt great landing a toss that streaked tails and got some good stuff after i beat Crow Mauler. Theres a ton of oppurtunity to test that luck if you are dungeon crawling responsibly so i just dont get the frustration. Again he's snagged up on a tutorial and cant let it go that he didnt ace it; i cant relate. You gotta fail to succeed, thats how you git gud. Again its a sometimes. Sometimes the dialogue ends and other times you can continue with a conversation if you play your cards right. Sometimes its just ends the conflict immediately. I would actually agree with you that the Talk feature can be unruly punishing because it isn't always apparent. Sometimes its still worth a try.

The best rule of thumb is if it seems like you could negotiate with it, it might be worth a try. I've seen a few people who did shit with the talk system that should have been obvious but I had no clue, and then some that are less than obvious and one thats virtually a end game secret.

I honestly went both runs only using the talk feature 3 times total both time for party members and HULK SMASHED my way through everything else.

Even with a party of 4 I had no problem feeding everyone even without the cookbook that allows you to craft food that restores 80-100 hunger, there is honestly too many food items in a game called Fear and Hunger. Sanity is a little harder to manage. The only bullshit involved in sanity management is the pipe can only be used by your character, meaning you should save all the alcohol for your party. Once you find the merchant in the city it becomes even easier to deal with.

Every coin flip against enemies can be avoided, part of the FUN is finding out how when you fight them. Every enemy has a sprite and there are no surprise random encounters, so you can avoid almost every enemy if you don't think you can fight them safely. I can only think of one enemy you HAVE to fight to progress and maybe some bosses at the end to get alternate endings, I'm still playing through it now. The coin flips for loot are awful though.

There's a lot to dislike about the game I realize that. I mean there's some stuff that is clearly bullshit. Quite literally, like jumping down a toilet hole with no way of climbing back. (There are often no warnings if something like this might happen either unless your common sense tells you not to jump down a shitter)

But this stuff is not there to disrespect the player. This stuff mostly happens in the early hours of the game and it's there to create a certain mood and first impressions. The game experiments how much you can bend good game design for the sake of atmosphere. The game actually gets more fair the further you get in it and a lot of thought and effort has gone into the game for those who care to see it through.

But yeah, the game definitely is not for everyone. I never thought this game would be anything but super niche experiment with relatively high production values (for a rpg maker game). But yeah, I think many people approach the game as if it was typical jRPG, which is a big problem, because instead of fighting everything and gaining exp, lvls and such, the fights should be avoided for the most parts. There are no big benefits in fighting everything that you run into. Because usually the status ailments just keep stacking up with each fight. And this leads to frustration eventually….

I was actually more influenced by survival horror games like RE and Silent Hill, than roguelikes and dungeon crawlers. That's where that mindset comes.

Are the hit rates that abysmal or am I just unlucky?

Considering head shots kill most of the enemies in one hit, it is way harder to hit it compared to other limbs. With magic you might have better chance. Or if you cut the legs of the enemy first to make it vulnerable.

Oh yeah and I can understand that getting nothing in a loot coin toss can be annoying. That's something I should definitely work on.

That’s normal. You should avoid enemies unless you get something out of it, like saving another character or getting an item. Combat becomes a lot less dangerous once you start getting party members. Even the little girl equipped with the dagger can shank enemies in the legs for you so you don’t have to waste a turn targeting them.

Some humanoid enemies need to have both legs disabled before you can reliably hit their head. It’s better to remove and enemies damage potential before moving in for the kill. Consider the prison guard a tutorial for every other enemy in the game.

there's a bug with backstabbing where the enemy you back stab lives after you kill him.

The enemy im referring to is one of the Dark priests and I think this happened to a prison Guard before as well.

You have to be with her and reach the deepest part of the dungeon so she can become God of Fear and Hunger then afterwards you fight her because she's the final boss and even if you win, you still die, that's ending A
