The gameplay has been improved significantly and the story choices affect the ending far more than just good/bad. You have to perform wave defense fights when the Little Sister is gathering Adam, which sounds like a chore, but I found it fun since I could really plan out traps and methods of attack. Story is never going to top the twist of 1, so it's more about complimenting it and fixing the parts that 1 was weak in. End fight is just a ton of mooks, but Bioshock really doesn't work for big final boss fights. If you liked 1, at least give it a chance.

I liked the both Bioshock 1+2. 2 had better gameplay but there was heavy asset reuse and didn't have the initial awe of exposure to the setting that the fist had. wave defense works in the style of bioshock because the games are all about preparation. You have proximity mines, traps, turrets, and the game expects you to use all of them to get through the situations. That's the thing that makes Bioshock 2 the best Shock game. SS2 forces you down a route and evades all criticism by suggesting it's about choice when in reality there's a handful of skills you need to progress and a number of them are so useful you'd be stupid to ignore them - Bioshock and 2 get over this pretense and 2 especially realized it's much better to make something that's all around fun, encourage players to engage in everything, and feel more rewarded because you engaged in everything.

Plus the combat isn't a piss easy joke.

That's true for the Protectors after the alpha series. Alpha Series were just roided, brainwashed men in suits. They started actually grafting the subjects into the suits afterwards, presumably to avoid having to deal with extraneous human detail– eg, hygiene, hair, etc. So the suit is effectively their exoskeleton.

First and foremost, it reuses Rapture. The place was full of leaks and the society in it had degenerated into drugged up freaks and endless ruins. There's no good reason for it to have kept going another year, much less ten, yet here it is that much later. Secondly is, as you said, not quite so deep; instead of genderswapped Ayn Rand talking endlessly about the great chain we have little miss Susan B Anthony prattling on about bullshit despite having nothing to do with Rapture's creation and also no noticeable rebuilding having been done. Third, the three jerks you can choose to murder or mercy barely do anything to help you after the choice, making the matter a fleeting one at best for flavor or ending. Fourth, you always have to fight the big sister regardless of helping or harvesting the little sisters; if she was reluctant to attack or kept her distance after you help them it'd make more sense, but she goes apeshit regardless and only at the end has any measure of context for her existence. The last point i can think of after having not played it for a decade is the audiologs don't sound as charmingly old-timey as they should or like the first game's were; the only ones i can recall offhand are a few dumb bitches spouting insults about their husband and the beehive queen mincing endlessly about how great she is and how shit everyone else is by comparison.

In short, it feels like a quick cash-in to a popular title, kinda like Dark Souls 2 or the later Katamari games.

Story was complete shit, the little sister defence missions were godawful and it lacked in atmosphere. That said, a few things were vast improvements compared to 1, mainly the hacking, the gun upgrades and the ability to use both weapons and Plasmids. The enemies however were still complete bullet sponges though. I unironically enjoyed Infinite more because it was an enjoyable arena shooter even if the story was a clusterfuck.

Given Rapture's history, why not try? A completely brainwashed junkie army that is constantly receiving orders/being monitored by a telepath would be a serious threat and the perfect army. Lamb not only realizes the power behind the hypnotic suggestions ADAM can induce, but is also able to pull enough of Rapture together to send expeditions to the coast to pick up little girls that can act as future little sisters.

Considering that, she's by far the most dangerous person to ever enter Rapture and allowing her to live is the dumbest decision anyone (except her daughter) could make. Ryan and Fontaine always thought in terms of profit, just in bringing products to market. Lamb wanted to turn Rapture into a war machine for an offense on the surface, whatever that would look like.

On that topic it'd be really interesting to see a Bioshock 3 set in 1979, set against a backdrop of a drugged up US (and one unaware of AIDS) Lamb could put drugs into coastal water supplies then send in splicers to serve as missionaries/cultists that could spread her ideology until the formal invasion occurs, ala Xcom. It'd be exactly what Ken Levine originally wanted Bioshock to be (PI having to save some Senator's daughter from a crazy cult, modifying himself with their drugs for the purpose) in the directors' commentary he did with Dorito Pope.

Come to think of it BA2's bad ending more or less turns Bioshock into an anime tier series where a crazy teenage girl controls an army of supersoliders, other less crazy teenage girls who feed off prepubescent girls and full auto security bots. She'd easily be able to terrorize the world until Rapture is nuked (which would be trivial to do, since Rapture lacks any sort of aerial defenses hence why Jack could fly in before the first game).

It's an interesting setup for a third game at least. Too bad Infinite blew it.

Genuinely great gameplay. Lots of fun using the function and number keys on my keyboard to rapidly switch between plasmids and weapons. Terrible story, though. Didn't like the strawman libertarianism that remains from the first game. The forced conclusion to the story was also a disappointment. Would have handled things differently.

Considering that people don't get where I'm coming from, I'll post a review that I made in some normalfag website last year.

<The epitome of the worst of modern game design.

<Main Character: Why is the main character one of those Half-Life style silent protagonists? You hear him talk in the opening scene so why is he suddenly mute? With games like Portal 2, you feel like there isn't anything add to the conversation but Bioshock feel like the main character is a literal mute and everyone else is ignoring his numerous hand gestures.

<Twist: The twist doesn't make sense and it is super pretentious and hypocritical. This wasn't some kind of commentary. Remember this was from the guys that coined the term Ludonarrative dissonance.

<The Choice: You're going make one choice and stick to it. The game has garner a lot of praise due to this "moral dilemma" except the game does so much to get you pick the good option. Besides the whole moral issue, the game does a poor job incentivizing the evil choice. Adam isn't really that necessary and you have no idea how much Adam you will get from the process. You only know that harvesting gets more Adam than rescuing. You don't even have a vague idea like "You'll only half the Adam.". Also, the first person that you meet that wasn't trying to kill you tells you not to do the evil thing, gives you a non-evil alternative, and killed the last person who tried to do that evil thing. There is also the whole bias to the status quo. People should stop patting themselves in the back for not killing fictional little girls.

<Gameplay: What I hate about the game the most is how obsessed it is in controlling the player's experience. You can't horde anything. There is tons of ammo lying around but your character will only pick up a hand full. This is to make sure bad players can always find ammo and good players won't be rewarded for being stingy with ammo. This also applies to money which has a rather small wallet cap for a game about Objectivism. There is also the quest markers, vita-chambers, lack of a "Shut up, Atlas!" button, and how the game "teaches" you how to use fire and electric magic. Seriously if you need to be taught using electricity on enemies standing on water hurts them, then you probably shouldn't be playing video games.

I would also add that there is no option to destroy your damaged turret so that you can control a new one. You can't shoot it while it is under your control thus you must remove it from your control then kill it.

Gameplay was an overall improvement, graphics were nicely improved and actually made the game feel like a horror title instead of a sci-fi thriller.

I think the stories are about equal for 1 and 2, but I will say that I especially like 2's story because it was probably the last triple-A game that had the balls to portray a communist as a ruthless megalomaniac (i.e. true to reality). My absolute favorite audio log from BS2 has to be "The Voice of the Self":

<Awareness of self is no miracle, Eleanor… it is a trick of the gene, an endless inner refrain, asking: "What's in it for me?" To serve the world, we must grow deaf to the self. Are you ready? Now, stop listening to my voice. Stop listening. Stop. Difficult, isn't it? Human verbal cues are defensive coloration – camouflage. Play this recording until you no longer hear the words. Then you may observe the people for who they are.

Immediately after this log stopped playing I fell completely in love with BS2's narrative, and, dare I say it, with Lamb's character, too. Whether the writers knew it or not, (and I like to think they did), they managed to capture the purest distillation, the most central tenet, of the communist ideology in that one 45 second recording.

"Voice of the Self" is communism laid utterly bare. The pathological need to tear down established norms, traditions and systems, not because those systems aren't working; hell, they could have worked for literally centuries: cultural and ethnic homogeneity, the sovereignty of the nation-state, the nuclear family, gender roles, the basic fucking reality of sexual dimorphism…yeah, those all served humanity just fine for MILLENNIA, but they just need to go because IT'S THE CURRENT FUCKING YEAR, what could you possibly have against PROGRESS!? Why would you cling to these social constructs that have sustained your bloodline since time immemorial, DON'T YOU KNOW YOUR GENES ARE LYING TO YOU!?!?!?!?

BS2's narrative and the character of Sophia Lamb are the best appraisals of communism I think I've ever seen in a piece of mainstream media. I'm actually kind of surprised it was released unmolested.

Without the story, Bioshock is nothing: hence why B2 is not worth playing. They're absolutely standard FPS experiences with a moody skybox and an interesting story to push you further.

If you worship the little details that differentiate one FPS from another, like inventory and skills while 99% of the gameplay is identical, you have still to outgrow the 'shooting is fun' phase.

hate the game all you want, the multiplayer was really fun. obviously, it was going to die out quick, but it felt like something that should have been in the original to begin with, everything just worked exactly as Imagined they would online, and it was a blast for those few months the game was really active. One of the things I miss were the audio logs and the announcers trying to hype the players up for their factions before the game, wish more online shooters did that

Also, playing as a big daddy in single just didn't translate well into the game. I don't remember playing too much, but I played on the hard difficulty, and splicers with pistols and SMGs fucked my armored ass up, while it took forever to take them out with my supposedly all powerful rivet gun, that ended up being a reskinned pistol. Playing as a boss enemy, devs should have structured the game around that fact, not reskin everything to make it big daddy-esque, when in reality you might as well have been playing the same guy from the first game again, for all the difference it made

Also, I remember reading in the previews how if you worked against the big sister, or did things she didn't like(I assume harvesting little sisters, ect), she would attack you randomly. Did that still make the cut, or was she reduce to a few random scripted encounters?

yeah, you don't need a good story if you have good gunplay. It's not perfect but it certainly feels better than bioshock 1, which felt very clunky.

I remembered really enjoying this game when I first played it years ago on console, so I yo ho hoed it and tried both one and two again on the pc

Fuck was it bad

Somehow everything just went to shit and I don't get it. All the quality of life improvements were designed for console, and 1 ended up getting the better PC port simply because I could select the gun and ammo I wanted when I wanted it from a menu. 2 forces you to scroll through everything manually or memorize the correct button. The enemies felt stale, the big daddy fights were tedious instead of tense, and I just ended up facetanking everything while smashing it or shooting it, even on the highest difficulty, which was pointless because you take more damage than Jack did when he got the fucking big daddy suit. The story was basically a fan fiction of 1 but with pseudo-religious commies, and overall it just felt like a fucking waste of time, even Minerva's Den which was supposed to be a "best of" from the devs with all the unused ideas, and in the end you're still just a scrounging nigger instead of a hulking underwater death machine. Big Sister fights were a fucking mistake.

If they were going to make this game fun, they should have dug into Lamb more and really hyped up the fact that this was an insane cult that was planning on fucking up the surface, as well as upping the overall scale of the game. Playing as a big daddy should have meant that lesser splicers essentially exist for you to crush into paste while real threats would come from traps and coordination they'd set, as well as other big daddies, and eventually high-end splicers like the Brutes and Houdinis. Fights for Little Sisters should have ruined entire areas of the fucking game, and you'd be encouraged to do the whole gay moral thing by either demolishing the areas and letting the sea in, or showing restraint on your one-daddy rampage by not kicking everyone's shit in. Realistically you should have also had YOUR little sister who could be upgraded independently from you, and her actions ultimately shape her as you ravage the dying city and escape because fuck you Rapture. Ryan Amusements was a shit level, and so was Persephone. Honestly it's one of the worst executions of a series of fantastic concepts.

TL;DR It's shit but could have been not shit.

I want to defeat a Big Sister in combat and then make her take my plasmid-enhanced Big Daddy Dick

I actually liked the concept of playing as a big daddy, some of the underwater sections were visually cool, too bad they never really did anything with them. The story itself is forced and retconned in, and the levels and gameplay have been slightly more streamlined than system shock and the first one. I didn't hate it, but I can understand why others did.
