Somewhat important. You have a total of 12 elements of faeries. Metal is one of the strongest and most moddable, you can give a fire fairy water attacks and nature defenses, depending on the rainbowy circles which I still haven't figured out how they work.
Just like Pokemon, it can turn into a spam fest of swapping each others weaknesses. If you picked water then your opponent will swap his fire for chaos.
It can also turn into a spam fest of KOs because of some specific overpowered defense abilities.
The most punishing combination is Light+Ice, it give you the most advantage over every class of fairy, missing very few.
Beyond canceling evolutions and assigning 2 offensive and 2 defensive spells for a total of 4 spells, there isn't THAT MUCH customization.
You could specialize your party to do tons of hex/curse effects, but often you'll prefer min/maxing with the highest defenses (which water, nature, metal, light has) and the fast and highest damage dealer.
Psychic is the most annoying type because there's a spell which teleports you randomly across the arena when the opponent hits you.
Zanzarah's combat is a first person pseudo shooter. You charge up your attacks and release them onto your enemy (or else the attack blows up in your face, like a bomb/or any grenade)
While the stat effects are many and diverse, they're no Magic The Gathering level of interesting and the method with which you attack your opponent is just 1 simple instant lazer. There are no projectiles, aoe, hack n slash, bombs/traps, magic walls, etc.
