Haven't played Atelier, but it looks nice. I tried the first Valkyria Chronicles game multiple times, and it was just a total slog. I can't speak for the later games, but the first one is just one of those cases where the closest thing to an all-arounder is the best unit in the game and you can just sink all your points into it, and all the specialist units end up being terrible by comparison. It has interesting elements, and it has a big upgrade tree that actually changes the cosmetics of the guns in addition to letting you actually specialize loadouts, which is pretty impressive imo. But the story and the rest of the gameplay just never appealed to me.

VC could be a great game if it was an actual strategy game and didn't give out rankings based on speed.

There's literally no reason to use anyone but Scouts to capture the enemy flag in one turn.

scouts get raped by stormtroopers until mid-late game and especially by tanks. They also definitely cannot handle any fog of war maps or maps with tight corners since those usually come with stormtroopers/generals who can rape them in a single turn

Provided that the Arland series is at least as good as the Mysterious series (and from all I've heard, it's better), I'd go with Arland easily. VC1 was OK but not great, most of the other VC games have been downhill from there.

Sadly, I'm intending to use Rorona to practice Japanese, so it will be a long time before I actually get to a point where I can even try to compare them, and I might not enjoy it as much.

I always liked how the Empire looked in VC, with their medieval armor mixed with fatigues, oversized tanks, and land ships. It’s a cool aesthetic, reminds me a bit of 40k.

I've got 40 hours in the atelier rorona dx pc port now and I have experienced maybe 1 crash so far. However, sometimes I get a weird error message in chinese when a auto-alarm is used in combat. That doesn't crash the game though, I can just click ok and resume the game. Can't say anything about the other 2 games though

Mysterious got best girl (of the franchise) Firis and the only one which is actualy fun as a game, for the first year only. The open world was actually amazing, too bad got scrapped due to casuals probably missing the deadline because searching is hard. Unfortunately there is little incentive to actually fully explore the zones after you get 3 recommendations or after you beat the game, since you already most likely pinpointed where the absolute best stuff is at, and you only complete the map for the sake of doing so.

The third game is too anime, even for an anime fan and the title should be changed to Mary&Sue thanks to the shit plot, the only saving grace is that Firis appears on it, even if she had a breast reduction.

I am not entirely sure Sophie was a game or not. I am pretty sure it have no lose condition at all, making it a non-game

For Arland: Rorona best game, Totori best story, Meruru is ok

This is why I'm using Rorona to practice Japanese, because I expected this (also you can scroll back dialog and replay voiceovers, which is a plus for learning spoken Japanese as well). Of course, I've put about 5 days on it so far and I still haven't gotten to the "make a thing" part yet.

I haven't played atelier games but valkyria chronicles is the kind of game you play once to see how the story ends and never touch it again, I can't say I enjoyed the gameplay that much since it's piss easy

I've actually noticed that in some parts the translations dont line up with the voicelines. This is pretty irrirating. I understand the whole dilemma of the text sounding weird if you were to give a accurate translation, but I would actually prefer it that way.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood that. I'm not quite confident enough yet to play the game with japanese text. I guess the conversations wouldn't be so bad since they are fairly simple. But I would mostly struggle with item describtions. Sometimes they are so vague that I can't really understand them even though they are english. You'd think that a trait called which gives you 100% crit rate is something that can be applied to a weapon, but then i spent 30 minutes of tinkering around just to realize that it only works on attack items
