The other day, I saw one guy who recommended playing FEAR without the bullet time/reflex ability, despite of the fact that the latter is supposed to be one of the most integral gameplay mechanics in the game right next to the crouch button.
Tried it out, and god be my witness, I had a fucking blast with the game. Machine Pistols actually being useful and even surprisingly effective weapons for a change, much more adrenaline during the firefights, and whatnot.
Can Anon recommend any other self-imposed handicaps or other, unintended ways of playing a game that actually makes playing it more fun, as opposed to just upping the difficulty for the sake of upping the difficulty? Just refusing to use certain abilities, or RP stuff, or whatever it is.

122333 challenge in FFXII, you keep your characters at their starting levels and focus entirely on the skill board, classes and equipment to beat the game, sounds hard but it's more of a test of patience than anything, still pretty fun since you're forced to use all sorts of weapons, armors and spells, not just the strongest shit available.
No exp critical mode on KH2FM, actually pretty easy once you learn how to dodge and block, damage scales so you won't be having hour long bossfights/random encounters.
Mythic/LASO difficulty on halo games, balls to the wall hard on 2, 3 and reach, manageable on 1 and ODST, iirc nonexistent on 4 and 5, never played those two so i can't confirm.

Metal Gear Solid V with the Infinite Heaven mod, and you deploy with zero gear. Basically subsistence mode.

Ironman + that mode which makes you reincarnate as one of your squad member when you die. Permadeath is a bit too unforgiving for a game like stalker but with your squad members basically being your "lifes" it's actually really fun. Gets really intense once your whole squad is down and you're all alone and desperate to find some allies to join you.

Mega Man X5. On it's own it's probably the weakest X game next to 6 and 7. Fun fact, that same runner and his couch came back for Ratchet and Clank 3, and were also incredibly fun to watch, in terms of commentary, gameplay and the runner purposfully did a harder & slower but infinitely more satisfying way of ending the final boss's fight(ejected out of the spaceship and literally used wrench attacks to kill the boss).
Combine that with that at the end of the run, the runner went up and sang opera with a really good voice. Too bad the actual opera song(I'm not familiar with the correct terminology) had terrible lyrics.

Megaman Battle Network 2/3 with the following ruleset:

It forces you to use folder combinations that would be outclassed by ridiculously powerful PA and navichip based setups. In 2 especially it gets to the point where bosses and enemies have so much HP that it becomes a challenge to modify your folder to maximise damage instead of other areas like defense or efficiency. I was running a 5+ code grass stage+fire chips folder during Magnetman's scenario just because it was difficult to get S ranks or beat magnetman with my previous 1 code folder. Your folder can change a lot over the course of the game.

I'm currently playing mount and blade with no cavalry. not for me or any of my units. horses you grab from enemies mid-battle is acceptable, but only to . my character is focused on strength and agility.
this alone has made this the most fun playthrough i've ever had.
this playthrough i also decided to not side with any kingdoms specifically. i act completely independent, however i use the tides of war to go against the arabs while never attacking any of the white kingdoms. the mongols i havnt attacked yet, but theyre my next target after the arabs are gone. then i will work towards siding with anyone that declares war on the mongols until theyre gone. once there are only white kings left, i will likely take the side of whoever is most powerful.
this playthrough has been very unusual as far as outcomes go. nords and rhodoks are the largest, followed by swadians, and snow slavs are the smallest faction spread across the map in forts and their only city rivacheg..

I installed alot of the sexlab mods for Skyrim, one of my favorites is called defeat. Now, defeat does a lot of things that other mods do just as well or better, but has a single feature that no other mod has ever touched which I love and makes me play Skyrim in the most unintentional ways.
It allows you to kidnap and carry around sexslaves on your back, in a sack. In conjunction with prostitute mods and all that good stuff, you can take your sex slaves and whore them out in town. Let me give you my latest work.
I walk my nordic ass into riften and instantly get shit in for talking to maven blackbriar. So, I creep into her house at midnight (no easy feat considering half my mods make guards into actual sentries) and walk up to her in bed, before clocking her something fierce. Passed out, I press K to get a "assessment" of my new slave. Seeing as maven is regal, in a position of power, and barely used (frigid cunt) she was worth a pretty penny for each fuck. So, her bound and gagged in my sack, I hit her balcony and parkour my ass to the ratway. Once safely hidden, I encased her ass in a skintight locking transparent bodysuit, and obnoxiously large locking matching heels, with locked blindfold. now, even if she did manage to escape (part of another mod, which really adds to everything) she is hobbled and bound to get lost. Time to get to work.
First stop was at the potion sellers shop. That old bastard enjoyed maven blackbriars brown rose to the tune of 400 gold. And as a bonus, mavens own daughter enjoyed the show, tipping me 50 gold for my trouble. (This was quite odd to me, considering that the mod that handles prostitutes also handles getting the guards alerted if you do something bad, ie solicit someone in front of their spouse, or child. It's apparently based on the invisible relationship tracker in skyrim, meaning old maven musta been quite a bitch to her.)
My good time was quickly halted when I got a massive bounty for whoring out maven in the local tavern. Apparently mavens only friend is the lizard bitch, or perhaps she just didn't enjoy someone cutting into her business. Either way, from that point on, mavens three holes paid my way from riften to markath.
Now, I know what you are thinking. This isn't a new way to play, just adding another feature to the blank game that is Skyrim. You misunderstand me. I'm merely a humble manager. I do not even own a sword. Whenever I'm accosted by ruffians and charlatans, I merely dropped maven and let them have their way with her, til they de-aggro and I can creep back and sack her up. And why do I do it, if not buying swords and potions? Simple. I buy all the modded in real estate, and very expensive crap. Once maven was getting coppers on the septims for her body, I took her to the top of a mountain and released her, albeit not from her restraints, just her contract with me. She ran directly south, which is quite bad seeing as riften was east from us. I sometimes visit riften, to see if she ever made it back.
She didn't.

I play Dark Crusade planning a route that would allow me to take the spaceport ability last, that way it feels like I actually have to build up my honor guard as I go along and gives the AI the ability to act more and be more engaging instead of you rushing the space port to lock everyone down. My very first time playing FEAR I almost never used bullet time because I tend to forget that it was even there. The same with my first time playing Max Payne. You could say I'm retarded it's fine but I always seem to forget these gimmicks exist because of how limited they tend to be and I get by just fine without them.
