I don't know exactly how Princess Peach became their ruler, but it seems like she relies on wise Toadsworth for advice on a lot of things. Perhaps on governing and etiquette and such. Even back in Super Mario RPG, she still had a close Toad adviser (Chancellor) who helped her out with ruling the Mushroom Kingdom.

Non-RPG Mario games that have actual good narratives/story/context:

Probably the best Mario story and most wholesome. Establishes a really good and cute relationship between Yoshi and Mario that goes back to their earliest years as the Yoshis work together to help reunite the brothers and take them home, introduces a great villain Kamek that also is an advisor/caretaker of Baby Bowser which was a good idea and good dynami (too bad they kind of overuse him as of late), Baby Bowser characterization was great, Mario finally being reunited with Luigi is cute and overall fantastic ending

>Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land

Rare moment of continuity from a previous Mario entry, showed Wario's resilience to get what he wants despite his ass getting kicked last game, showed a light connection to the Mario Universe that most spin-off adventures generally don't have (Peach is referenced due to the Golden Peach Statue, and Mario appears at the end of the game), had the balls to have Wario's entire motive to steal an already stolen Peach Statue in order it to hold it for ransom against Peach for quick cash, didn't bother to attempt to make Wario seem like a good guy compared to later entries, and depending on how much money you receive you win out hard in the end, either getting your own castle or even a planet. Your anti-heroism is for the most part rewarded (compared to Wario Land: Shake It where Wario get's fucked at the end for a gag). Still the best Wario Land story.

>Luigi's Mansion

Amazing atmosphere, good introduction to one of the best Mario villains King Boo who had a decent plan that almost worked and showed he had a legitimate murderous grudge against them, showed a good brotherly love as Luigi works up the courage to go through the Mansion to save Mario, good characterization of Luigi (that is sadly overplayed nowadays, but was good at the time), Bowser being in the mansion was a good twist, very dark lore implications that seemed to have implied the actual death of Bowser and his resurrection at the hands of King Boo (that they later handwave nowadays with "i-it's just a Bowser suit", but back then it was far more vague and I feel it was purposely so), Yoshi's Island-tier wholesome ending when Luigi is finally reunited with Mario.

>Mario vs Donkey Kong 1

While I don't like the Mini-Mario story as much as the simple "Pauline is kidnapped" one, the cutscenes show a very fun adventure that the rest of the MvDKs don't have. Showed some decent characterization of Mario's goodwill, where despite Donkey Kong acting irrational and stealing the Mini-Marios Mario still worries if he's okay when he falls off the building after the first final battle. Very heartwarming ending, where instead of Mario continuing to chastise DK for his actions he decides to forgive him and give him a Mini Mario which grow fond of him, nicknaming him "Monkey Man!" and saying "I-a love-a you!"

>Super Mario Galaxy

Routine Bowser Kidnaps Peach narrative, but definitely the best version of it they have ever done. The grandness of traveling to the "Center of the Universe" to save your "Special One" evokes a great feeling I didn't expect in a Mario game. The bizarre ending where the universe resets in a black hole as the lumas sacrificed themselves for the birth of a new universe was great. Rosalina's storybook was pretty good too. Unfortunately they fucked it all up in the sequel.

To answer your question honestly, I think the character and backstory of Mario is pretty simple, yet changes as often as the character himself.

>Early Mario

Pretty much your blue collar everyman. Was a carpenter in Donkey Kong, a construction worker in Wrecking Crew, and most notably, a plumber in Mario Bros. He could even be a villain when needed, as seen in Donkey Kong Jr. His design was based on convenience, a big nose and mustache to draw an easier face, and overalls for a simple body. Then, Super Mario Bros. came along and they pulled a fish-out-of-water story. How comedic for an Italian Brooklyn immigrant to find himself in a classic fantasy kingdom complete with a princess kidnapped by a dragon. Of course, to provide explanation for the teleportation, pipes can be seen all across the kingdom in a droll reference to Mario's plumbing career. These can be seen as Mario's "Popeye" years: clear archetypes still finding their place in the medium. Simple, yet charming.

>Middle Mario

Now established as a platformer star, Mario's main games now stick to a common genre, but vary wildly in aesthetic. Compare Super Mario Bros. 3 to Super Mario World to Super Mario Land to Super Mario Land 2 to Super Mario 64. Spin-offs now begin to appear such as racing, board game, RPG, tennis, and golf. The series has proved successful enough that consumers now associate the name with quality and are willing to experiment with titles of other genres under the Mario name. The first major story retcon comes with Yoshi's Island, showing Mario and Luigi were always Mushroom Kingdom natives. Donkey Kong '94, an "expanded remake" of Donkey Kong now clearly takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, as does the spiritual successor, Mario vs. Donkey Kong. These are Mario's "Looney Toon" years: several characters with consistent actions and personalities that take roles as necessary. If Bowser and Mario were cowboys in the Wild West, you wouldn't ask "is this a prequel? Are these their ancestors?" you would just know these characters are reprising the same roles in new "continuities". Mario has already become a pop culture icon.

>Modern Mario

Mario, now risen as a video game icon, stagnates and standardizes. All spin-offs, from Mario & Luigi, to Paper Mario, to the sports games now have the exact same artstyle as the main series, starting with New Super Mario Bros. Compare the four New Super Mario Bros. games with each other, and then contrast with how dissimilar the first Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario World actually are. Spin-offs refine and perfect the main gameplay, driving feels great in Mario Kart 8 and hitting the ball is satisfying in Mario Tennis Aces, but completely fall apart in extra modes, general "personality", and any feeling of love and care. These are Mario's "Disney" years: Mario now has one artstyle all games must use, new enemies are completely bland, and games feel more designed by committee than ever before.

Despite this, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey were rays of light in the darkness. Very creative, fun, and controlling Mario felt good at all times. Hopefully, Odyssey proves the series is not as creatively bankrupt as it can seem and younger developers can add the passion and drive Mario is seriously missing. It is also worth noting that Super Mario Odyssey seems to retcon again that New Donk Kingdom was where the original Donkey Kong took place all along.

Plenty of people wonder why there isn't a Wapeach or Wadaisy. Those people have not realized that the Giana Sisters are the canonical wa-princesses.

Super Mario Bros. 1's story deserves more credit than it gets. It has a lot of elements that make sense but aren't called attention to in later games. Bowser is a wizard who turned most Mushroom Kingdom subjects into inanimate objects. Goombas are Mushroom Kingdom subjects who instead sided with Bowser, so he didn't transform them. They do remember this, certain games remember not to have Goombas appear outside the Mushroom Kingdom, like the guys in Mario World actually not being Goombas because it's Dinosaur Land and not the Mushroom Kingdom. Also, cool little bits like all the Bowsers except the last one actually being transformed enemy decoys. I also like the idea that the blocks that give items/coins, and thus don't break completely, are the ones that used to be Mushroom Kingdom people. They're helping you. This also means that, no, Mario isn't killing people when he breaks bricks. The ones that break are just regular bricks.

He was a construction worker, but after his pet ape caused so much trouble across three games, Mario's boss, Foreman Spike, got butthurt and started fighting him. That's Wrecking Crew. It's how Mario got fired from his construction job, and why he later had to become a plumber.

Also, Mario might have been "born" in the Mushroom Kingdom, but nothing says he couldn't have traveled somewhere else for the Donkey Kong games. Donkey Kong Land has DK (who might be Jr or Jr's son) go back to the same construction site from the original game. Of course he also goes to all sorts of other places that are in all sorts of countries that clearly aren't the Mushroom Kingdom.

Well Toads seem to be relatively high status since many of them are nobility or directly serve the royal family. Goombas are clearly the underclass, which is why they sided with Bowser when he came to liberate them.

The set-ups are fake and everyone knows this. However the invasions are real because both the Mushroom kingdom and Koopa kingdom play "war games" with each other. When the princess gets kidnapped it's a call to arms to train the civilians of the kingdoms with scenarios disguised as levels for Mario and Luigi to go through. The medical tech is there with 1-up mushrooms and extra lives that any Goomba stomped in the will always be brought back back. And when that Goomba runs out of extra lives they switch Goombas with more. Usually the war games end before any real harm comes to the invaders.

In times the Mushroom Kingdom has to team up with the Koopa Kingdom it's always in RPGs where there are hit points and no extra lives. This is where the real risk of death are at.
