I'm holding out hope for Halo Infinite. Halo 4 wasn't that bad if you just play the first half and mostly suffered from trying to make the game prettier at the expense of level design and AI. I actually really like the moments between Chief and Cortana. The writing in four, at least with Cortana and Chief, is the only area Halo 4 surpasses the Bungie games. Remember how they handled Cortana's conflict in Halo 3? That was far more obnoxious in my opinion. I can see why you don't like it, though.
The biggest problem with Halo 4 and 5 for me is that the Flood are gone. They were the existential threat that loomed over the whole story, without the Flood the stakes in Halo would feel a lot more immediate, not to mention mixing up enemy types. But you can't exactly bring them back and their replacements, the Prometheans, are just shittier Covenant with a lot more exposition.

The problem with Halo is that Bungie gave the players the impression that only the Chief can save the day. It's only after ODST and Reach that they showed that it was possible to play as a marine or a spartan and still be able to make a difference. The later games only made the core systems more interesting although I think after Halo 2 there wasn't much more to expand with the mechanics, just refine them and create more situations to explore them. Some of the additions in 3 and on felt tacked on but vehicle hijacking was an awesome innovation, mix and match dual wielding made for really interesting game play with a lot of risks and rewards to factor in. Sure not all of the levels were perfect and some were miserable with how repetitive they could be, especially in halo 1 the biggest perpetrator of this failure, but that's as big a sin as Doom 2's shitty city levels or duke 3d's lunar apocalypse or blood's six keys. Not show stoppers, just bumps in the road.
