Alright faggots, I'd like to take a moment to talk about what's probably my favorite game. For cons it aged like shit, and that's saying something considering it looked like a cheesecloth that's been left out in the sun for way too long even back when it came out. The combat goes from diablo hellfire to one punch man when you get your shit in order. And finally it ends on a cliffhanger and there's no chance what's so ever of it ever getting a sequel, ever.
For the good, it has the best writing of any game or even most books I've ever read. Like, there's an actual book where you'd find your journal. Then there's another one in your log. That's in addition to each character you meet having an actual character; soldiers will gripe about the loved ones left behind, nobles being nobles will scheme even in these circumstances and that comely serving wench will definitely respond to a brave young soldier looking for some assurance in the cold night. Main plot is warcraft 1 in stalingrad and you're just another newfag fresh off the boat, issued a rusty stick and some armor still dripping bloody from it's previous owner. You earn fucking everything here. Initially that's lunch and a bed you can call your own. Eventually that includes respect, a squad of your own, knighthood if you chose to accept it, possible lichdom, a princess fiancee and the title of a savoir of the realms. The music is some of the most haunting, atmospheric, blood curdling you'll ever hear. The inventory system is what KCD hoped to be but couldn't be autistic enough to actually pull off. We've talking separate pieces of gear, all visually represented with specific gameplay pros AND cons for a game that originally released in 1999.

Extremely so. Not only is it a good idea to scrounge and re-appropriate any loose pieces of gear but as you can imagine it's only beneficial to keep your ear to the ground and make contacts with the local black market, cozy up to your peers or visit the local basement dwelling NEET necromancer and his spooky skeleton sidekick. You can also speak to people for the novelty sake of speaking to people; there's a fairly early quest in which a bunch of soldiers are bullying a fellow trooper because he's keeping a memento rose from the sweetheart he left behind. And you can either beat them up, convince them to give the guy a break or nick the flower for a nice charisma boosting accessory and replace it with some orc underwear. The second part is optional but it actually draws an reaction

A friend let me borrow this when it was new. I had to have my older brother do some real arcane fuckery to get it to run on our old PC. I have pretty fond memories of it, I remember the story being really interesting and somewhat grounded and small-scale compared to other RPGs. I also remember getting my ass kicked really badly by an ogre or something early on, but that might be because I was maybe 12 and didn't know what I was doing. At some point the game bugged out and my character just became permanently invincible to all attacks. I kept playing like this because I wanted to see where the story went. When the not-orcs finally attacked and everyone was getting murdered I remember being told to go back into the lich's lair for something, but there were missing graphics and the game started falling apart as I played. I never did finish it. I kind of want to try it again, I'd probably appreciate it more now.

There's also an opensource port of the game if you're inclined to fuck with that but I don't have any hands on experience with that. Hell, I'd probably share a magnet if my old bootleg CDs didn't work. Some krauts have apparently taken to making their own fork but again, no personal experience with that one either.

The combat is ridiculously easy to break once you know what's what. For example I remember throwing those vaguely seeking magic projectiles well beyond the screen range to avoid being raped by the various elementals and such you find later on. I also remember some asshole shaman returning fire from the other side of the map. First and last game in this genre that provided me with a full on indirect artillery duel. Just fireballs coming from one side, lightning bolts flying from the other and dead orcs and shrapnel lying all about.

That's fair enough actually. Well, https://www.myabandonware.com/game/siege-of-avalon-bfl#download looks acceptably shady with the file being a straight up iso and all, and the game installs fine. Alternatively you can look up the opensource thing on gith but you will have to hunt down the latest arc for yourself.

fixed both. Just move the audio folder to game folder (it's buried in one of the sub-folders) to get audio back and run in windowed to get rid of cursor trail and stutter (it still remains in menu and book screens somewhat, but it's not present in the game itself)

If you're playing patchless it's a question of point redistribution, ie, do you want a headstart in one or the other. Now, if you've gone and downloaded the unofficial patch those traits have a very real and unique effect. So much that I would advise against using them.

That's just the savegames folder. Best I can tell you is to get the patch if you haven't already and I hope you're running W7 with the NT compatibility checked on. I know it's a pain to get to run but I think it's worth the effort. Also:

Think Diablo 1. There's nothing wrong about a fighter using spells or a mage being decked out in plate tier armor. As long as you find some that's actually enchanted for mages since regular armor will slow you to a crawl in addition to some rather major penalties. Comparatively a good assassin/scout shouldn't rely solely on the sneak attack and his sense of fashion since some enemies will shrug that off and come a pissed your way.

Again, the fix for the no sound thing is to literally cut and paste the audio folder from the \ArtLib to the root folder. You can't just copy it or leave it in it's original place. And if that doesn't work well, then fuck. You'll have to look for a better workaround for yourself.
As for the actual game bear in mind that point hoarding is encouraged as getting trained is always preferable to directly increasing your attribute. And some of those trainers are a one time opportunity.

Same, I picked the magician class and ended up wearing heavy armour and bashing faces in with a flail. I just learned Aura of Iron spell and with it I have 10 DT and 75% physical resistances. When I encounter mages I spam Hold and that's about it.

That was already posted before. Unfortunately, patch doesn't fix everything: that one anon earlier in the thread has stuttering, I don't have music, some of my main gear disappeared form the chest and I got 11k crowns out of nowhere at some point. It's not even a proper RPG, because it's entirely linear and even dialogue is very linear. Combat is nothing like Diablo, it's just like generic infinity engine "whack-an-enemy-until-it-dies". Don't bother with it if it's still not working properly after installing the patch and moving the audio folder.
