The 0 default means "auto select". You don't need to specify it at all

Not mentioned in the guide, this libvpx-vp9 feature increases quality and saves bitrate at the same time. It defaults to disabled. You should set it to 3 (i.e -aq-mode 3) as that is normally the most effective mode.

>libopus

It's the best encoder for the best lossy audio codec out. Blind audio quality testing deemed 96kbps opus encoded from a lossless source makes unnoticeable or tiny but not annoying audio artifacts. I recommend you use this bitrate, or slightly more if your source is lossy. On the real world however, you can get away with even less bitrate, as most people have bad audio setups and some even have bad hearing, and the tests I'm referencing were made in a community of people knowledgeable about audio.

>-ss and -to

Remember to specify them before your input file, not after. If you specify these after, ffmpeg will decode the entire input file, but only manipulate your specified range. This makes your PC spend a lot of time doing essentially nothing.

If you specify these options before your input file, ffmpeg will seek to the start section, and stop at the end section, as you'd want it to.

A poorly named option, this one tells the encoder how much time it's allowed to spend figuring out how to encode a frame. best means "as much as it feels like", the default of "good" means use the -speed setting, and "realtime" means "little time".

Not specified in the guide, this libvpx-vp9 option used to provide inconclusive results in the early days of vp9 encoding, but nowadays it slows down encoding a lot but increases quality. I recommend you use it.

"-vf" is an option for ffmpeg called "video filters" and it allows you to use video filters you specify, the subtitles filter there is poorly described. It hardcodes subtitles, which is necessary for 8chan, because 8chan doesn't allow you to post webms with subtitle tracks. Just pointing this out.

I recommend you specify your frame rate as 1 divided by the song's length in seconds, that way there'll only be 1 frame in the entire video to save on filesize. You don't need to repeat the same frame over and over, do you?

ffmpeg allows you to do some simple math in most of its options, including the -r option. If you have a song that is 184 seconds long, then you'd specify your frame rate as "-r 1/184". That means you get 1 frame per 184 seconds, and the webm of the song should then only have a single frame.

As for posting an actual webm I'm too lazy to encode now, have a quality waifu.

I've tried doing something similar to this but it always produces a file that makes VLC crash and MPC will not play it. Firefox plays it fine though.

In ffmpeg, every option you give it applies to the next time you specify an input or output file. Some options like -y are exclusive to output files, others are exclusive to input files, and some like -ss&co apply to either. There are also things like options that only apply to certain codecs and certain kinds of streams (audio/video/etc). Every option also has a default. Every option you didn't set yourself is either disabled or follows its default behavior

The default for -ss is the start of the video, the default for -t and - to is the end of the video. If you don't specify them with different values, then you're telling ffmpeg to handle the entire video. This is why you want to use them before the input file, that means only the specified sections from the input file will be handled and then as far as the output file knows they're all that exists. If you specify the start and end of a video on the output file, ffmpeg will follow its default behavior on the input file which is to decode everything, and then it'll output the range you specified on the output file. That's why using -ss, -to and -t before your input is the correct way to do things.

You can specify multiple input and output files in the same command, which is why things work like this. In this a little more advanced command for instance, I create 2 outputs from a single input while making use of ffmpeg's defaults where they overlap with what I want to do. I didn't bother using any other options to increase video/audio quality, as this is just for testing.

What this did was create an input that started 10 seconds into the specified input file and lasted 30 seconds. I then had a 30 second clip to handle in whatever way I wish.

The first output file starts at the very beginning of this clip as this is the default behavior, and I told it to last 10 seconds. The second output file starts 10 seconds in, and lasts for the remaining 20 seconds because I didn't specify another place to end.

I also changed the pixel format to yuv420p in both outputs. I had to do it twice because if I did it once it would only apply to the next output file, not both.

At the end, I had 2 webms.

GIF simply wasn't made for this, and even if it was, we have better video codecs and picture formats out. Just make a silent webm.

If you want to go GIF anyway, it's too much effort to be worth it, but there are some tricks:

>make sure to delete repeated frames. Make the singular instance of the frame you left last as long as the multiple ones would have played for (saves filesize).

>avoid dithering (creates a grainy picture that explodes on filesize, can look worse than no dithering)

>try using ffmpeg's palettegen filter for creating the palette (generates palettes, works well in my experience). You can also touch up the palette manually after.

>open the set of pictures you intend to turn into a gif with GIMP. Use the optimize for GIF shader, and then manually delete portions of every single frame that don't visibly change compared to the previous frame to make them transparent and therefore flat. GIF is technically a lossless format except for the part people insist on outputting pictures with more than 256 colors with it, and the encoders won't make transparent pixels out of pixels of the picture that don't change. If you do the job of choosing what should be erased and what should not be erased for the gif encoder, massive savings can be achieved.

Some options in FFmpeg have different effects depending on where they're placed (e.g. before or after the input file). Placing -ss before the input file will seek the file closely to the specified time using file's key frames and shit, which will not be accurate but will be much faster than seeking the file frame-by-frame when putting -ss after the input file. One other thing to note is that when seeking using key frames, the specified time basically becomes the beginning of the file so the time you later specify in -to will be relative to that: basically, ffmpeg -ss 00:00:03.543 -i <INPUT> -to 00:05:01.631 <…> will result in a file with duration close to 00:05:01.631 as opposed to expected 00:04.58.088 because instead of seeking from 00:00:03.543 to 00:05:01.631, it first sought to 00:00:03.543, assumed 00:00:00.000 and only then started seeking to 00:05:01.631. Obviously, it can accidentally go beyond the end of the file and fuck your shit up. Besides that, -t and -to cannot be put before the input file anyway. However, this behavior may differ between versions, judging by >>15969730.

CRF is VBR but instead of targeting a fixed bitrate it instead targets a fixed level of "quality".

You could have a video that is mostly low bitrate with a short, high-bitrate scene at the end that eats up several MB in a few seconds, with VBR you'd set an average bitrate limit which lets the encoder encode the low complexity parts at appropriate bitrates and the high complexity parts at the specified maximum.

On CRF however you'd have to uniformly lower the Video quality to fit the 16mb size limit.

Nope. It's as accurate.

Things are only not frame-accurate in ffmpeg if you use the copy codec macro for cutting a section of the video, in which case it depends on the codec, but most can only be cut every keyframe.

ffmpeg does write metadata to the file telling it to start and end at where you wanted so if the player is good (most aren't) it should obey that and still start and end at the right frame, but since most players are shit it won't happen.
