Love this kind of style. Thinking levels like mad monster mansion from Banjo Kazooie. I'll aim to play any suggestions I get that I haven't already played.

Ape Escape 2 had a funny little haunted house level.

Obligatory example.
One of my criticisms of Breath of the Wild was it didn't have a spooky zone. Would've been great to have another Ikana Canyon region, or Arbiter's Grounds, anything dark and creepy and full of ghosts.

holy fucking shit I've been looking for this game for the longest fucking time, I saw it in a video game magazine back when it came out in like 200whateverthefuckitwas and always wanted to play it, do you know if it works well emulated?

Can't say I do but it's not a very complex game. I'm sure you can finagle something out of it.

Pac-Man World 2. This game isn't all spooky just a few spooky levels. Favorite game I that I was gifted. It is also mentioned in a lot of hidden gems threads. I believe the PC version of this game was cracked a couple years ago 10 years past its release. I played it on gamecube when it came out so I don't know how good the PC version is.

I really wanted to like this, but right now it doesn't seem to make sense how to progress. Between entry level enemies capable of permanently removing your arms, coin flip rng making you miss like 90% of all worthwhile treasure, and having a chance for an enemy to spawn at save points that can one shot kill you, it just wasn't a lot of fun.

Liked the graphics on this for the fat xbox and the musical numbers during the boss was cool, but I'm not too keen on the combat from what I've played.

Its a heavy and punishing game

I get having a game be heavy and punishing, but I feel like the player is punished for making correct moves as well. You can avoid all the encounters you can and still miss every coinflip. You get into a single encounter and target the enemy's body correctly and they can still one shot you. It is more rng than it is punishing, since it isn't entirely based on skill.

The whole game of Inner Worlds deserves to be mentioned here. The aesthetics - and the game in general - follows my favorite design philosophy of having basic mechanics but having so much of them that the game both looks and feels great.
The graphics are good in their own right, but what makes them atmospheric is how every area of the game fits its own theme. The style and even many sprites remain the same, but every location is distinctly different in how they feel. A lab next to prison cells feels entirely different from a mechanics workshop, which in turn feels different from the overgrown garden.
A major part of the game is your ability to transform into a wolf, which is even better than it sounds. The game is abandonware and you can get it for free: https://www.dosgames.com/game/inner-worlds/

It's because any version you can buy of Blood runs in dosbox so the mouse is jankey as hell. Just download BloodGDX and install it with the GOG version you bought. It will fix the mouse problems and allow you to run the game in more modern resolutions.

Nice. Will do mate. I've never really played the game but have heard it's basically hard as balls and in the same vein as the classics.
Quite enjoyed Duke 3d, really enjoyed Doom / Doom 2 (even beat Doom episodes 1 - 3 on nightmare with no quicksaves back in the day). Absolutely love Quake.
Really have high hopes for this! Thanks for the help.

unfortunately, GDX seems to have weird shit going on with the hit registering regarding explosive weapons.
Is the Build Engine problem with only being capable of updating 1 axis at a time with the mouse worsened if you run it on dosbox? I did manage to find an apparent 'fix' to the axis update problem and it didn't seem to work. As I could only use dosbox, this could have been the issue.

It does something with it, the season change gimmick is annoying as all shit, but after that it does retain the tone of everything before the twins for like 15 mins of gameplay at the end.
Keep playing and wait for the sequel, I guess. The ending is absolutely retarded, though.
