People were turned off by the artstyle and the misunderstood monetization system that started you off with nearly nothing. It was basically "play for 60 hours and unlock everything or just pay $30 and get everything, present and future."

The issue with the system was that you started off with just a laser pistol, chaingun and fusor with light armor. The last two weapons are mainstay weapons that anyone should always have equipped, and the third mainstay weapon, the grenade launcher, can be unlocked after your first game. After that you need to unlock kinetic boost which is around 1 to 3 more games, and you are now with the best Light armor loadout in the game that pretty much every skilled player uses.

Issue is, you still had to unlock heavy armor, vehicles, grenades beyond frags, medium armor, all the energy kits (i.e. energy shields, teleportation) and weapons. So, you started off with nothing which makes you feel like shit and gives the assumption that the game is P2W, but the total grind required to unlock everything was pretty minimal in reality.

The launch also had bugs, poor server performance and the unlocks were busted for a week, and the game quickly died.

I played it a bit, both in public servers and pubs. I can't really compare it with anything, as it was my first real Tribes-like game (don't make me say ZFPS). The most fun though was creating a local server and skiing around the map for hours, although I've heard grumbling about the physics being shit by some people.

The physics are basically the same as Tribes 2 with hold-to-ski. The people who thought physics were shit only played Tribes: Ascend and didn't learn how Midair worked.

Fuck you Hi-rez , fuck you to hell, tribes ascend wasn't that good to begin with but it was at least fun with its classes, now nobody plays it and good riddance. I still miss ascend with its classes but im never getting that experience back thanks to their shitty policies as developers. Should've just made it so everybody had access to every unlockables and just slightly balanced every alternative equipment.

The way the maps were made, the way the jetpacks worked, the artstyle, the lack of balance, the fact that they did the retarded "light, medium and heavy" thing that killed tribes.

Add skins and retarded monitization.

The big kicker however, was the fact that you couldn't self host a fucking server, instead you had to "rent it".

They tried to clone everything that tribes did INCLUDING the shit no one liked.

That's sounds exactly like what happened to Hawken, and many other f2p games. Free-to-play is the Early Access of PvP games.

That was potentially me, but I don't recall posting anything about Reddit. I just wanted a small indie shooter made with nothing but hopes and dreams with volunteer work get some attention on the site. I guess it didn't work out. I always knew it would end up that way, these revival shooters always do, I guess I just didn't want to believe it.

The game wasn't flawless. They could have handled the F2P model better or reworked the artstyle, but the latter was never gonna happen so far into development.

Yes. They could have handled it better by not going for it in the first place and then making a regular priced and developed game. There are way too many failed F2P games for me to think it's a sustainable model. The few handful that are at least semi-successful are lucky exceptions, and not the rules.

Honestly, the only thing I couldn't have seen them doing with Tribes-Ascend is to just let people host their own servers, Content-wise, I'm not sure what else they could have added, the game on it's own was fine, I viewed it as CS:GO in that regard, give players the ability to mod shit, host servers, and that's literally it.

But instead they choose to hold it hostage.

Didn't they actually implement hosted servers right before the game died, and it wasn't enough? Or was it hosted through Hi-rez?

Anyways the game was shit, it always went through cycles of "HOLY SHIT TRIBES IS AMAZING" and "wow this is fucking garbage, fuck hi-rez", even throughout all of beta. After beta the bad periods greatly outnumbered the good and people simply stopped caring, with more and more p2w weapons getting pushed, and that "developer" getting so pissy at being called out on twitter that she removed a map from the pool entirely.

The game was pay to play for ages. That, and you could just buy the progression pass which gives instant access to all gameplay unlocks. It's the same as the Hi Rez and T:A model. Ascend's classes were gay and the only good thing they ever did was that final patch that let people play base again with missing gameplay elements of course which got boring because what's really needed was renegades.

Anyone who even thinks of developing a Tribes game will be pointed in the direction of Midair as proof that the subgenre is dead. I've never played any Tribes game but I put some hours into Midair (steam says 44) when anons started talking about it. I appreciated the skill ceiling, developed some speed and got some flags and pinpoint shots, but after a while I got bored. This kind of game develops a huge contrast in player skill, and absolute beginners (like I was) will not have any fun being useless until after they've forced themselves to play for a while. I've never played Overwatch or Fortnite but I'm guessing they're way more accessible.

The way tribes 2 works in it's mechanics is because the game has much smaller maps and thus the jetpacking works to a degree but without any of the speed.

The problem with midair comes straight from it's poor design in maps and the jetpacks, while not terrible, don't help.

The focus of midair and tribes 2 didn't have any of that large speed factor that tribes ascend had, they played more like an arena shooter.

I have and i actually enjoyed them, but….

there is still a somewhat active community behind those games, tribes ascend however doesn't due to the absolute shit stain nose dive it got because of hirez.

The fact that you're blowing away criticism because the game isn't what it was made out to be is retarded.

Literally all i kept hearing about midair when it was pushed was around the lines of it being another tribes game where you can "go fast", but even midair has a cap on movement which is exactly what killed tribes ascend for me.

Midair also fails in being ugly as sin, and as a result, as an "outsider" it doesn't feel like the developers put any real effort into it. Cel shading is lazy, it always has been, the excuse for it always boils down to "it's stylistic!" but it's still shit. When I saw the first animation for the spinfusor "slap", I lost ALL desire to play the game. It felt so limp wristed. The sound design and HUD/IFF elements were lifted straight from T:A, which is like a slap in the face for anyone who is a T1/T2 purist. It's like a couple people in the Tribes community wanted to cash in on suckers rather than trying to create a good product.

This anon is right. If you play T2 now when the community is dead, yeah typically they play that tiny map that's only best as a 6v6 or 8v8. But most maps in T1/T2 would comfortably fit 20v20 or 30v30 when the game was at its peak. The mission zones were easily double what you ever had in T:A, with multiple bases in some of the maps, and the ability to go out of bounds to set up a cap route or inventory station. There was also a lot more verticality and diversity in map design, with mountains, hollows, rivers, lakes, fog, lightning, lava, and more shit I'm sure I forgot. Also most maps in T2 weren't completely symmetrical, and some were entirely lopsided. Compare that to T:A where every map essentially was a bowl shape with soft hills around the edges. In T1/T2 you had to find your own route based on your class, pack, and ability to place inventories and utilize vehicles. In T:A, the game highlighted the exact routes you used to cap flags.
