>For the most part, fan-translators aren't subject to DMCA, at least to my knowledge.
hahahahahahahaha
I can do a list
<7th Dragon 1 DS (Sega USA letter)
<Pokemon Prism (TPC DCMA)
<Chrono Ressurrection + everything on the site including Chrono Trigger retranslation (copyright)
<Final Fantasy Type-0 + spanish PSP square projects for iso merging / fmv improv. (prepatched copyright infrigement, later dropped suit)
<Dragon Quest VII 3DS (threatening letters in private, btw Mother 3 guy got some prior to release but didn't cower)
<Chink unlicensed Sega Genesis jarpigs (website drama, threats to RHDN admins by repro seller of different translation not affiliated with chink devs)
<Blue Almanac english proto release (threats to collector by repro seller of translation licensed by dev, not on their behalf, later bought it off and bragged about hoarding it forever and buy our translation instead)
<Working Designs balance mods to restore sane difficulty ("friends" of victor ireland on his forum salty someone didn't like them, raided the RHDN topic and pissed on his parade to ensure work is dropped and everyone else get in line and play the (((only))) localization available)
<Zwei 2 fan translation (almost done but lead wants some $$$ for herself and sell out to xseed unsollicited without the team's knowledge, xseed initially not interested, then taking the project 6 years later symbolically and flushing most of that work down the toilet)
<"it's claimed by other group!"
<"it has 1% chance to be officially localized"
<"stop retranslating / translating stuff that's already covered"
to tell project to stop
leading to
<ENTIRE Tales of series on PS2 series of translations tanked that way by a sellout who wants a namco PR job and initially used an OFFICIAL namco forum as the fantranslation hub which got unsurprisingly purged a few years later with most fan menu patches of the series available online lost forever that way in a way only they have themselves to blame for,
<SMT translations until recently, see Aeon Genesis meltdown over SMT:if and getting his media friends to cover his indirect "harassment" at cuckchan
<Kiseki translations "wait for geofront to do the whole series everyone else don't you fucking dare do anything"
<still going on every fucking time a retranslation or a retro translation happens
<even in emulation: decaf devs whine about how cemu (closed source) and its success is demoralizing them and hindering the existence of open source emulators
<had to mention this here because the exact same types use the same argument that poor "team who claimed translation" is demoralized anytime the EEEVIL "team who broke the exclusivity" touches the same game in the same century
a shit culture cultivated by users
a myth started by the groups who want monopoly (at best) and sabotage (at worst) to take down competitors
and parroted by foot soldiers, "fans" of these groups into BDSM who fight to stop the existence of the other translation
the most low iq foot soldiers also believe the groups they harrass will then go and translate their favorite game because moon is a finite ressource.
The real danger is those fuckers. Not surprising because sony already employs astroturfers to yell at emulation and romhacking sites that tame things like texture changes, text ports and things tolerated for years are ILLEGUL and MODS HALPS (already the shadercashe sharing that makes modern emulation tolerable is cracked down on by… moderators from within the "community") and then sony goes and patents that shit and lobbies the japanese government for more anti modding laws. The real danger is astroturfers.
Translating and hacking old games is the new hottness in modern gaming after the retro fad because the industry is that creatively bankrupt. It's natural they want to stop other superior options existence. The recent crackdown on romsites was just a first step so they can sell you SAVESTATES as new games.
