I've gotten back into this game, and I finally beat the dragonslayer part of armageddon's blade. People tell me it's the easiest, but it's the one I've had the hardest time with a few years ago. I blew right through it this time so I am confident I can beat the rest. I also starting playing horn of the abyss as recommended by several people anons included, but I really don't like Cove. Any tips on how to play as them. The towns I like the most are fortress, stronghold, and dungeon.

I liked playing the tournament level maps against a friend. One of the small ones that barely reach T7 units before the game was over; with simul turns, it almost felt like an RTS, only a bit slower.

I forget what towns I liked. I think Tower was great at getting ridiculous spells going, but I had the most consistent wins with Dungeon. Medusa and Minotaur Kings were very fast and strong and you could just snowball early pretty hard with minimal losses, it was great

Yep, once I got past it it was smooth sailing and I managed to cream the entire campaign with relative ease, except fort the last mission, which was a brutal slog that I eventually got through

That's gay. Technology in fantasy settings is the bee's knees. In fact building on that, not-tolkein-fantasy in fantasy settings is cool as shit. Pirates and Cowboys, we need more of that good shit. Apparently, if I'm reading the HotA Russian forums right, there was talk of adding Dinosaurs to HotA. Not sure where that went but damn that would've been cool.

Next one up that the HotA team considered is Cathedral Town, meant to be a neutral-alignment Castle more representative of the Inquisition. They have some really edgy designs but got pretty far in production, and some of these I think look pretty good. The autumn-themed town is also just gorgeous.

There's less concept art that I know of, but most of the finished units had their sprites revealed. Their tier one unit had 3 upgrades (like the Sea Dog). Militiaman, Guard, and Patrolmen. The final unit had 8 attack, 5 defense, large creature, and an abuility called stranglehold.

I'll go ahead and post the tier 7 creature since afaik the upgrade was never finished so it fits nicely in this post. It's the Avenger, and its upgrade was the Punisher.

Forge was a really great idea, and it's a shame HoMM of the time sperged out. It resulted in a gimped HoMM3 since they cut forge, and Conflux, which was intended for the next expansion, got rushed which is why it's unbalanced and has reused assets.

The Tier 4 unit was the Chimaera and Fierce Chimaera, which was a large creature, flew, had spell immunity, and a chance to block physical attacks. I really like the design of this one, I wouldn't mind seeing it get made into a neutral.

Tier 5 was the Adept and Inquisitor, shooters with immunity to hypnosis.

Last for Cathedral was the Tier 6 unit, the Paladin and Templar. I also the animation for the Templar's walk.It had a 20% chance to bless and a 20% chance to prayer.

Lastly was, what I believe was originally the planned tier 1 unit for Cathedral but reworked into a neutral, and then just nothing happened with it, the Rejected and the Lepers. Really shitty units but they were immune to Plague Week, and the final upgrade had an ability called Leprosy. An interesting idea, I wouldn't mind seeing this get brought back.

The last faction HotA had considered originally was the Kronverk, Their original pitch for this was "the alliance of the northern nations – dwarves, highlanders and nordlings. The town consists of these races and other northern mythical creatures. The Kronwerk tactical style will depend on maximal defense and to the magical potential of the town NEW magic spells (Rune magic) will be added. As for the weak sides – rather slow unit speed and no flying units. Architecture – roman style and some Eskimo-styled (igloo, buildings made from ice and snow)." Unlike Cathedral, there doesn't seem to be any details about how the units would work, but loads of assets and ideas for what it would've consisted of. It's definitely a far more snow-themed faction than Tower is.

I believe a ton of units were considered because it was back when HotA was going to add alternative units for Factions (So you could pick either the Berserker or Goat, for example). That idea seems to have been completely dropped though.

Anyways that's enough for now, but I think these are really fascinating, and I'm surprised HotA decided to make an entirely new faction instead of use one of these concepts. Makes me excited to see what they've got planned for it.

Forge was a ugly attempt to inject a bastardized version of cyberpunk bullshit into a fantasy game. It's a complete fuckup and will forever be criticized for this every time it comes up, for good reason.

Anon I agree forge is terrible, but if you strawman any harder you'll scare the birds away. Anyways I am almost done with armegeddon's blade. Just need to do the festival of life which I've already beaten, and the final story. The last part of march of the dead is super easy. I am already about to eliminate the two foes closest to me, and the others will not fare any better with my superior economy.

Is HotA mainly developed by Russian community? I wonder, why HoMM had such success and following on East Europe. You can find more videos and tutorials in Polish and Russian than in English on YouTube. Orchestras, forums, even fucking "esports" are thriving and native speaking it seems. By looking into Paul Anthony Romero youtube channel - he's prorably making a buck on tours in Russia.

Almost finished with the the Restoration of Enrathia campaign. This is taking awhile. I find myself making 2-3 heroes as powerful as possible in every mission, maxing out on all the stat-boost buildings and mage guilds. Takes forever. Did you guys do this, too? I'm worried about running into some really difficult last mission where you have to have to have super heroes. The game's pretty easy, comfy and enjoyable. Enjoying the experience.

For single player, I'd bump fire and water magic down a step and put artillery and wisdom in god tier. Water only has Prayer, Bless, Frost Ring and Summon Water elemental as good spells. Maybe Forgetfulness. Slim pickings. Learning and navigation are shit. Tactics belong in top tier. Pathfinding's pretty decent: I'd put in high tier. Diplomacy is the most busted skill of them all, in both single and multiplayer. It makes everything else look balanced.

Hugely dependent on map size. High tier on small and quick maps, where the games won't last long to make stack sizes large enough to make the extra damage negligible. After that it goes down in tier each time the map size and game duration increases. Basically, if you reach a point where you're always better off disabling units than straight up killing them, then Sorcery is a waste of a slot.

You only really need 1 main guy to take on the other main guy the enemy has or fight the army guarding the scenario objective.

Everyone else acts as support with smaller armies to pick up resources, scout and kill wandering heroes, possibly capture an undefended town.

For RoE, you shouldn't have too much trouble. I like to buff my heroes too, but going off road for +1 ATK often isn't worth it.

The biggest part of this game is balancing what units you can afford to buy and what are worth buying.

The list is based on my online playing experience. And let me tell you, if one hero has ANY magic on expert, and the other has NONE, the first one will win EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. That's why they are all in God. Forgetfulness is actually an amazing spell, since it utterly kills the main online strategy of blocking your shooters. Mass Curse is the best counter to Haste! It's not a given that Earth and Air are better than Fire and Water - that's a newbie's view. Necro is nerfed in HotA and its power depends on the kind of maps you play. If there is a lot of level 1 monsters then of course it's broken, otherwise it's just okay. Same with diplo - I've had games when fucking nothing joined and it turned out worse than if I had no skill at all - since I had to fight those monsters and take the losses.

But if you guys disagree, I'd like to see your charts.

This is always innecesary and extremely time-consuming but the autist in my requires to always catch them all. Raising armies, defeating legions of monsters, hundreds of troops dying just for that +1 that will never make a difference.

Half the time I've wasted in HoMM is because of this.

I strongly doubt your claim of online play. Logistics heroes have been banned in online matches for nearly 20 years. And with good reasons. Most people will play on modified maps where every stack is set to never join because of how OP diplomacy is, where Dimension Door and Town Portal are disabled from appearing in Mage Guilds and all the artifacts that could give those spells are also disabled.

Logistics HEROES are banned but the skill itself isn't from what I remember. Because if someone has a level 20 Kyrre, where each level gives another 5% bonus to logistics, she's going to be running halfway across an XL map every turn with a phoenix stack.

They can't ban anything in HotA - you can create a match with whatever rules you want to. I play with NO RULES only, and I can say that logistics is NOT BROKEN. Though it is a really good skill, you can win without it (but not without a magic on expert).

Let's have a match sometimes!

As for DD and TP, 90+% of games you are NOT GETTING THOSE. Level 4 / 5 MG is fucking expensive and will steal resources you'd instead spend on the Level 7 creature buildings (since those usually take gems, sulfur and such).

Beats losing the game to a guy that clears out a Dragon Utopia on week 2 and DDs in front of your undefended castle because he got a Spellbinder's Hat out of it. The reason those artifacts and spells are banned is that they're so much better than other options in the same "pool" that they wind up being game ending: if your enemy gets a Town Portal spell out of his lvl 4 Mage Guild he's able to send his army way further out without fear of losing his castles and you'll lose through attrition because he'll just keep taking your shit with impunity while you can't go take his shit without risk.

A minor Q/A with someone from the HotA team on the Heroes 3 forum. Compiled for convenience sake, spelling errors left in tact.

Q: *Is Factory going to pretty much completely replace Forge? So there will be no new town named Forge or a town which would mimic most of "the original Forge line-up" in the future? (atleast for now?)*

A: One cannot replace what was never introduced or even planned to be. Forge is neither of those. That being said, yes - Factory is meant to leverage certain elements and ideas that could be paramount to the concept of Forge. We aren't talking about visuals but about being the most technologically advanced town of all (for Forge, that was the entire idea; for Factory, it is one of many). Still, it could be argued that Factory is going to take over this niche. Moreover, select homages to the original Forge might yet happen not only within Factory as a town, but also other future HotA content, including Factory campaigns.

Q: *For a long time, it seemed that Forge would be the next released town in Hota. I would say this was still the case for about 2 years ago. What made you change the plans along the way?*

A: This is a common misconception. Forge never was announced as a town in HotA or even planned down to any kind of a roadmap. All Forge-related activity was limited to sporadic individual efforts of some crew members dating back to the period from 2011 to 2013, taken completely at their own behest. Some of those materials were published by their creators, like the town screen by Don_ko, but no further developments have happened on that front since. Thus, speaking about changed plans would be a mistake. Factory is new plans, not a replacement of old ones.

Q: *Are we gonna see any new specialties from Factory heroes?*

A: Most likely.

Q: *If the Factory show up in next updates will be some artifacts of "Ancients" ? Or this fraction dont heave any bissnes with them ?*

A: Something of that sort might make an appearance in the campaigns, but it's too early to discuss such things.

Q: *They are some rumors about talking the "Factory" will be more like alien rase from another world its this true ? (I hope we can find in campaning )*

A: No.

Q: *In the trailer You show us new city with the name "New Dolere" witch it was name of orginal planing city of Forge that NWC abound.Are You planing to add some easter eggs in Factory like lvl 7 unit name Jugernout/Drednought ? Or maybe even hero name "Kastore" ?*

A: Yes, we are.

Q: *Do You plan to add some neutral creatures to the game in style of Factory in the future ?*

A: Most likely.

Q: *How much we must wait to get Factory playable ?*

A: No earlier than a year from now.

Q: *I Love the 2nd and 3nd lvl unit Than You show us (The truth its i love You all units but this 2 stole my hart )Will the 2nd unit gona heave flamethrower ? It will be nice to heave something in game and i hope 3nd will heave some two-handed pistol/shotgun*

A: Yes, it's a flamethrower indeed.

Q: *Everyone familiar with NWC's Forge knows it was planned that even some non-level 7 creatures would cost special resources like crystal and gems. Will we see these kinds of elements in Factory? / As Factory is a "tech-town", I don't personnally see any of the current warmachines fitting for them. So will they receive a warmachine made just for them? / How far does Factory Mage Guild go, level 3, 4 or 5? / Cove was connected to Water Magic, what element is Factory connected to?*
