My only friend back from high school plays it daily. Has over 1500 hours in that heap of shit. He's being trying to "go pro" for a long time but is "stuck in platinum".
About a year ago he bought it for me asking that I "place" with him for the "season" and I humored him for his effort. I ranked "Master" and he landed just under Platnum.

Nope. If you take a gander at the overwatch ecelebs, even they start to hate Overwatch. I think one of the most predominate figures, A_Seagull, made an video explaining why he's not having fun with OW anymore. Blizzard really shat the bed with their golden egg.
I dabbled a bit into OW and the biggest complaint that I find with the game is you can't really get creative while playing it. What I mean is each character is designed specifically for you to do that one thing that they do, meaning that you can't really do anything outside of that one thing. And due to how the game is designed both in balance and core systems, you can't really run an oddball team setup without getting crushed and the predominate meta to me seems like which team can stack their ultimate the best. A comparison I'd like to make is R6: Siege which, granted is made by ubishit, allows you to try different strategies and most of the operators allows for some creative freedom in what you can do (not all of them, but there's a couple). For example; the game's destruction system allows you to make new entry-ways, murder-holes, and chokepoints which can drastically change the way a map is played, and characters such as Buck allow you to basically change the map in any way you see fit. You can use his shotgun to make shortcuts, blast out the ceiling to shoot enemies from above or shoot out the floor below you, make distractions, or just to blast enemies with a under-barrel shotgun. In Overwatch, all you can do with your selected hero is what the developers want you to do; there's no freedom or room for creative strategies for any of the characters you play as.

Saying Paladins is "Better" is a fallacy in itself, as while the characters are more mainline in terms of DPS mechanics, the inability to swap and the absolute domination of certain characters over others will make you quit far faster as it's ultimately a far less balanced game

The thing is, Overwatch was created for esports but Blizzard has no idea of how the esport scene works. Technically, Overwatch is one of the biggest scam in esports. They've forced Twitch to buy the exclusivity but no one is watching the OWL because it's just fucking boring.
Blizzard acted like control freaks over the OWL the first year, asking for an insane amount of money from the esport teams, they also forced a code of conduct that was a pain in the ass for the pro-gamers but also for the esport commentators (if a player was known for being in CSGO or LOL then they weren't allowed to say the name because CSGO and LOL aren't Blizzard IPs). There's a reason why they've opened the OWL to the casual players, it's because no one wants to play that shitty game.
If you hear positive things from esport journalists about the OWL then they're Blizzard shills and you should look elsewhere (there's a woman journalist who is LARPing as an esport commentator for Overwatch and she has no knowledge of esports in general). Last month she was tweeting about how she knew about Blizzard shutting down HotS a week before but didn't even write an article or talk to the people who lost their job.
You should look for articles and videos from Richard Lewis and Thorin (Duncan Shields). According to them, it's hard to report on that game because of the shitty Reddit/Tumblr community.

Overwatch wanted to be an esports game but Blizzard doesn't really know anything about balance, and they never have. Their idea of balance is "throw tons and tons of shit in, make the graphics nice and shiny, and our fans will white knight for us and claim that one thing must counter another." And they're right, you will do that, just as you did originally but pretend you never did. It worked for a good solid year and Bilge made a shitload of money from it. What they should do is make a sequel with a couple new features. It won't be any good, just another Team Fortress 0.4 with waifus, but people will buy it all over again anyway, make more money, and keep pumping out new sequels or knockoffs. Sell a separate Overwatch Royale game. Overwatch 6: Siege. Overwatch Minecraft. Overwatch FPS MOBA. They'll do it, and you'll say "they're ripping us off" as you buy it anyway.

My main issue with overwatch is the top 1% deciding game balance changes for 99% of players.
For example they have the hacker type character who used to be able to hack pretty rapidly and gain ult charge from healing teammates by hacking health kit locations.
Nerfed because the (((pros))) said it was OP.
There's now no reason to put your hack on cooldown for health kit locations because it serves no benefit other than denying the location for enemies and making it respawn faster, yet it's far more valuable for hacking the enemy team because fights are over so quick that health kit locations are largely irrelevant. Thanks power creep of new/updated characters.

I have a friend who has 5 separate accounts in Overwatch and plays it literally every single day. I play with him occasionally because being friends sometimes means doing things they want to do instead of things you want to do. Mechanically I think the game is fine, but the matchmaking is complete tripe. The game has a visible "SR" number and an invisible "MMR" number that factor into matchmaking. The trouble is SR only changes when you play competitive games, but MMR changes when you play ANYTHING. Quick-play, free for all deathmatch, fucking around in custom games, everything tweaks MMR, which feeds back into competitive matchmaking. It's blatantly horrendous and I really don't see how anybody thinks that's an acceptable way to go about things. It's no wonder matchmaking doesn't work with such an idiotic system.

To be honest, yeah, I see where people come from. At the end of the day, after you reach a particular level, the OW meta basically consists of a good team setup rather than much to do with player skill, and then accurately spacing Ults and ability combos.
Does this mean I'm going to stop playing? Hell no, it's really all me, my dad, and my brother have in common. I hate CoD games, and they can't get into any game I get into simply because they don't have the time. No 6v6 is generally terrible for class-based shooters, it doesn't really work in TF2 either. The problem is you can't really justify having more niche/situational roles in the game like spies, snipers, builders ect when choosing such a role means you're giving up an entire sixth of your potential combat output for it. There's also a much greater focus on needing to pick a role of fits with what your team is playing, when really most people in shooters just want to log on and play their favourite class.
There's also the problem that players are more likely to be at each other's throats in smaller teams. Which is why it's hilarious when Blizzard then talks about wanting to deal with "toxicity" when it's their own damn fault for designing the game this way.

I played OW for the first few seasons. Played Symmetra every single game on attack and defence. Hit 3500 which was Master? at that time. EVERY SINGLE game got flamed for playing Symmetra despite clearly having a high enough win ratio to make it that high. The map design is the worst Ive ever seen in a multiplayer game, the character design is abysmal and one dimensional, the gameplay itself is similarly flat and boring, with no ammunition to manage and most characters only having one weapon to use and a one or two abilites that all boil down to point and click, and the matchmaking ensures that most players are locked in a perpetual deadlock of 50/50 winrate, you stomp a few games then get stomped, theres almost no in between thanks to the utterly awful balance and dead meta.
Dont even get me started on how Blizzards weird fixation on trolls and toxicity has bled directly into the community, and how youll get reported for "trolling" because you picked the wrong hero, despite having the highest impact in the game, highest KDA, POTG, etc. Ironically in their quest to eliminate "toxicity" from the game, blizzard instead eliminated good spirited banter and left behind a community full of paranoid, mongoloid tryhards who see trolls in every shadow and blame their team for everything that goes wrong. Its a pure corporate product, designed for mass appeal and nothing else, theres no depth at all, no heart or soul. Its most enduring legacy will for a fact be the pornography, most of which, in the greatest twist of irony, actually has more heart and soul than the entirety of the actual game.

Very true. Initial impressions and experiences like that are probably a much bigger factor overall. They underestimate it, and also the relatively poor character designs. Arguably the press q to win idea of hero powers is supposed to help retain new players but the skilled players are just way more effective, nullifying that possibility, and like you say the default character is bad anyway.
The disgust factor of hearing you have to "rent" new characters must have put a lot of people off as well. The terrible trailers and poorly communicated release schedule also confused and annoyed. Is it out or not? Is it a beta? It takes too much work to figure that out. People can't be bothered.

Shortly after it came out, I had no interest in playing it or getting it, it appeared to me to just be very mainstream general audience appeal desperation. The Disney Pixar artstyle just told me Blizz was trying so hard to get everyone to like it. But my brother got it and played it, and decided to get a copy for me, so I bit the bullet and played for a few months.
My biggest gripe with the gameplay was just how railroaded you get individually as a player. It's a team game, but most team games allow you to perform well on your own while your own team might lose. Overwatch doesn't do that unless you're a handful of characters, and there are situations you simply cannot get out of through no fault of your own. Someone could simply pop an ult you just cannot escape, and you can't rely on your teammates to stop it. If Zen pops an ult to heal his team around him and enemy Dva detonates killing half the team, that's it, Zen is dead.
It's just so reliant on circumstances and not enough on individual player skill, which is why the people who DO have a lot of skill always pick the same characters; Tracer, Widowmaker, really anyone who can get kills without trouble. It's just braindead.

It's exactly the same with Ubishit and their "report toxicity" bullshit in Rainbow 6. So many people have been banned completely unfairly and unreasonably, not just because they said "mean" things, not just because someone interpreted their actions to be trolling, but just for NO reason at all. And they essentially never review any ban cases and have no solid appeal system. How their userbase puts up with that shit, I have no idea. It's definitely given them a pretty bad rap, however.

People will always talk shit, you can't eliminate that. I assume games like overwatch end up becoming more of a social experience than a game you play for its own merits after awhile. Stack up with your e-buddies in a discord and use it as a background noise, who cares if you win or lose because you can just blame it on "that fucking guy who picked hanzo lol". It's definitely a large factor for fortnites success because it can be played on just about anything with a fucking screen on it at this point so people can say "hey lets squad up and play a few rounds of fortnite" kinda thing.

The reason why OW is dead is directly because of the game being overly-updated. The meta is constantly switched not because of new tech or playstyle formulations but instead because the OW team simply wants to shift the meta. Every new character is inbalanced and either fucks up the dynamic so hard that they become the center of the meta until they're nerfed or are dead on arrival. Sniper healer enabled the 3 tank meta, moira was the spam queen and outmatched dps healer mices like zen catagorically, doomfist was tied with the best dps in terms of both damage and mobility, spic hacker was dead on arrival, the paladin with the chain-mace is broken to this day and the hamster is the only one that is fun to play is only fun because the physics engine is fucktarded in OW

size depends on how the classes work (and mode/map design as well), shit like that doesn't work in ow because they vary wildly and some roles are pretty much mandatory.
toxicity is also lot less of an issue without ranked, if people want to tryhard they can run a custom tourney or whatever (it wouldn't fix it because the community is full of retards, but still)
