what the hell are you talking about, FM3 was huge, everyone I know fucking blasted cum all over themselves over that game when it was new. I never cared because I don't like SRPGs but FM3 easily stands among the greats in the SRPG genre
the "mainstream" of gaming if you could even call it that was basically platformers and sports/racing games, but gaming was so much smaller of a hobby back then and everything was niche compared to anything now, so if you didn't have friends playing these kinds of games you probably never heard about them because, keep in mind, this is really before the internet had become popular and most people playing games were in their 20s at the oldest (I was 17 in 1999)
it was just a different era altogether, but while front mission may be all but forgotten by the mass market today it was certainly popular at the time
