Here's why you Game Over if the MC dies you double nigger. MC is the only character in the game that can hold multiple personas giving him a much bigger advantage and situations to deal with than the other party members. They balance this by forcing you to protect the MC despite how much more powerful he is instead of face fucking everything. He is the the best character of the party and at the same time he's the achilles heel.

None of this makes for any actual difficulty since on hard mode the computer exploits critical hits and downs far more readily meaning you can be KOd on the first turn with no way to counterattack. So if you have that happen to you for any reason you lose all your progress because nobody else in your party can throw out the many restorative items or Morgana's revive spell just because the game has this retarded gameplay decision. There's no reason the fool arcana should be the thing the game revolves around when one of the major things is teamwork.

All that change did was make it so that you might arbitrarily lose progress and have to rerun the last 30 or so minutes of a dungeon or boss fight over again.

Everyone also used to be able to switch persona but had better and worse compatibility depending on arcana. Much better for a story about a team of humans working together than the current setup which reeks of post 00's anime wank.

It's just a mindless decision that both makes your other characters look like callous pricks for not healing you if the means are on hand, and it doesn't even impact anything since as you stated. Dying to a boss just means starting it over and unless you truly fucked yourself in planning for it you can just beat him the next go around. Likewise dying in an enemy encounter means just running back to where you died but with no added incentive save making sure to block or something. Is added tedium a good thing?

You really don't get what the complaint is? Not a single person is saying to remove challenge, it's to make it a real consequence when death occurs. It's rare that I meet someone who is this die-hard about Persona 5 despite it's mediocrity. You want to punish the player, punish them for not having revive items in stock or being out of SP or not keeping up with their gear when entering higher level areas. The game should only end on the party being wiped given how little the current gameover paradigm actually matters. Cool. And thinking more about it, I would argue that combat would be a bit more challenging if the fight continued after the MC is downed because of how many actions are dependent on him being in a non-incapacitated state. Just look at what you lose if he gets hit with a status effect and extrapolate further. If the MC is dead you:

>cannot negotiate

>lose the most flexible member of your party, no persona swapping

>lose the ability to swap party members (depending on Star arcana rank)

>Lose any MC only abilities like the Tower (arcade kid) gun abilities

So at the very least for my playthroughs. If another party member got downed I would sometimes hold off on reviving them because it wasn't opportune to do so for various reasons. If the Mc got downed it would become a mini-mad dash to get him back on his feet to return these functions.

But really, I don't like the current direction of Persona. If they had continued the P3 track of not controlling your party I would gripe about this specific thing less (although I still think the AI should be able to revive you in that game) But this change and many others are in service of turning the MC into a visual novel protagonist and it's annoying at this point. Teamwork really got thrown under the bus with the new direction and even though P5 took steps to bring some of the party dynamics back it felt like 2 steps forward 4 steps back. Negotiations are a good example of this.

In P2 party negotiations were one of the best ways to really characterize the crew, including the silent MC Tatsuya/Maya. Being able to combination negotiate showed how characters felt about each other and the situations they were in. I think the stagnation of gaming had more to do with rising development costs and the increase in both hardware and disk real estate. With games costing as much as they do it's harder to get big name developers to take risks because they need to recoop their millions dollar investments with guarenteed sales. 7th Gen was still expensive development relatively speaking, but it was in a sweet spot where we saw experimental titles coming out on new hardware and some standout franchises were started…only to get whored out later on.

That's not true by any reasonable metrics. Game development excluding the costs of marketing is still on the increase because the complexity of the data that must be created for any new content has also increased. It's not just a 256x256 texture map from a decade ago, it's a 4096x4096 texture map with bump mapping, shading, etc. From the stuff I've read, even with these engines out the costs of game development either plateau at best, or still are increasing across the AAA industry.

So in addition to the 60%+ part of the budget that's marketing which increases every year, the costs of the actual development is still increasing in part because the complexity of the data being created is still increasing as well which demands more time and resources.

The issue I've always had with the Switch is that it really is under powered for some the high graphical fidelity games it's gotten or will get, they could have had the Switch have the same specs as the new Nivida shield and still have had it for the competitive pricing.

Again, I'm not disagreeing with you on this. P5 is very much less attached to the high school life than it's predecessors. However, it doesn't trade away high school with something that divorced from the idea of being a young student in japan. And I think that is my point of contention.

For personas 1/2 while characters can be students, and schools are present it's not that important to the overall story. The main plot point of Persona 1 is someone dying in a hospital and a reality warping machine. Persona 2 IS has a setup similar to IT, where a group of people who experienced a traumatic childhood event regain their awareness of it all and then you have the rumor mill affecting reality. And while you could argue that IS and P5 are similar because the school only constitutes a very early part of the story; like that other anon points out you still have mandatory school attendance and exams reminding you of your status. Not only that but Your homeroom teacher is a confidant as well and she makes it abundantly clear you're still a student. Really, Takemaki and Yoshida do the same as well but it's equal parts "You're a student/You're a young person".

Persona 5 is still about high school life, but I'd agree it's more about students who are disillusioned with organizations including education and the nightlife of a younger age group. However they haven't go whole hog and cut out the daily life simulator being a student.

Social links yes as it's just a more explicit sub quest mechanic. I do feel like the calendar is maybe a game or two away from getting dropped from Persona. The thing is, I actually got to spend some time last year with a Japanese exchange student. My friend and his family host exchange students all the time. The year prior they were hosting a German student. He confirmed that the absolute shit state of the Japanese student body is true. He confirmed that girl/girl bullying to the point of driving to suicide happened multiple times at his school. Persona games always get fucked over in pre-production. Persona 3 was originally not gonna have the weird chibi models and stay to the isometric perspective for battles. Vid related is on the FES edition disc. Presumably because FES was originally gonna have production documents that you could view. I hate the chibi models and it's why I'd prefer them to remake the PS2 games instead of just remaster them. Although I'd prefer they remake Persona 2 first because fuck the PS1 version of EP.
