Are there many games that can pull off both? I've been playing Sonic Forces which has style out the ass; but gameplay feels even less fufilling than Generations/Unleashed/Colors despite it technically having more to offer with the OC and weapons gimmicks. It got me thinking how rare it is to see a game that can pull off both. Then I couldn't help but think back to the Genesis Sonic games which weren't by any means complex games to play; but they had really nice momentum based pinball physics that let you breeze past everything once you learned how it worked. Plus they were oozing with a unique mechanical-nature aesthetic that still looks cool to this day. They're perfect examples of games that have style and substance, which the new Sonic games lack.

So what else pulls off both? I know /v/ has a boner for cuhrayzee games and Metal Gear but I never got into those so I can't say if the apparent style+substance combo actually exists with those games.

Near a Tomato

God Hand

Dead Cells to an extent

Muramasa Rebirth

Lots of fighting games but they usually feel tedious to learn

Oh and Metal Slug

Cuhrazy or whatever the fuck you wanna call them. DMC and bayonetta, technically MGR if you don’t mind it being like 2 hours long.

>If it's not colurful toddler vomit it's not stylish

It has a heavy "resistance/uprising" aesthetic going on you dumb nigger. And style isn't just purely graphics, it's camera dynamics, music, etc which Forces does pretty well given the autism taking place on screen.

Is God Hand really as good as it's said to be? I've been wanting to give it a go for awhile but never bothered. Does it emulate well or should I throw it on my PS2's hdd?

What would you reccomend as a first cuhrayzee game?

Revengeance is more mechanically shallow straightforward and easier than a lot of other games in the "genre", so you could start there. Otherwise I'd recommend just jumping in with DMC1 and not putting it down until you've completed it on the highest difficulty.

I agree that aesthetic wise Forces is pretty great, for a modern Sonic game. the problems stem from the fact the game feels like it was made in a year.

As for Action games

Yes Devil May Cry 1 and 3 are both fantastic with tons of Style and substance, I would say DMC4 but the game is clearly half finished, but still stylish as fuck. That's the point of Devil May Cry after all.

But on the other hand DmC Devil May Cry is all style no substance whatsoever at least when it comes to the story, gameplay wise it's decent, but only because it gets to cherry pick any and all of it's combat, from the previous DMC games, and it still doesn't do any of the things with it's gameplay things nearly as well as DMC 1, 3, or 4.

Bayonetta is a great beginner one. Witch time, dedicated dodge button, and combo offset are very easy to understand and help defensively. Also almost every button sequence is a combo so you can mash and still get through the low difficulties. In terms of complexity MGR is a little lower than bayo but parrying and dodging are poorly explained. DMC is the end point, where you'll be purposely thinking of combos to use in different situations.

I'd say the F-Zero series fills the bill nicely. The first ones on SNES are oozing with style, and the gameplay, while simple, had enough depth that getting to beat the game on Master Difficulty required a lot of skill. The later games on N64 and Gamecube really improved the gameplay by adding more mechanics, and the style was even cuhrayzier than before. I like how the soundtracks on both games are very different, but work great.
