I really like the "fish out of water" type stories where the main character uses their modern-day knowledge to be better than the filthy medieval fantasy peasants, but instead 75% of the isekai stories we get these days is "YOU HAVE SUPER-AFFINITY FOR MAGIC, YOUR MAGIC DICK IS MASSIVE AND YOU CAN DESTROY A CONTINENT BY BREATHING ON IT GENTLY".

To make a proper Overlord game is to not focus it on Ainz because he has way too many fucking roles.
The best way to do it is to have it be in the starcraft engine cause you can do a lot with it. Just strip the mining mechanics for more indepth combat and RPG type interaction.
You can do Starcraft BW type story telling where you pick different campaigns and each of them have a certain mechanic you go through.
One specifically focused on a bird's view RTS with Cocytus and control hordes of skeletons to invade foreign lands, being giving extremely limited resources and having to achieve victories with those imposed handicaps. you can ask your lord to truly challenge you by restricting more units and having to do special tasks within a certain mission.
One campaign where you play as Enri commanding Carne village, having upgrades for potions, training goblins, upgrading heroes like Brita, and most importantly, upgrade the town's defenses. for this campaign you can tell villagers what to farm/collect to prepare for each increasingly difficult attack.
A hero campaign where you play as Momon and Gamma, your abilities stay the same throughout the campaign but the challenge is if you can keep your pitiful human allies alive for a different ending. Different endings can also vary. if you have too many of your allies die the town will grow suspicious of you. certain key characters dying will affect the campaign and who/what you interact with.
There's also options where you can play as the villain. Have heroes raid the tomb of nazarick and see how far you can get with your acquired skills. preparing carefully on what supplies to bring as the further you descend the tighter the resources will become. if you lose, managing to escape will be an extra difficult challenge but will reward you with greater experience meaning you get extra stuff to bring for the next incursion.
you can do a freeplay campaign where you just say fuck it and take over everything. upgrading your tomb, your troops and all that jazz at your home base. expanding your grasp of control while trying to take down each empire. in this version it'll be treated like a mix of mount and blade with epidemic. acquiring a whole kingdom will grant you certain benefits but since you've gained notoriety the other empires will actively try to hunt you down and team up to make it more difficult. you can establish lieutenants with the maids or guardians, each of whom have specializations in certain areas. for example demiurge will have full information of the enemy party relayed to you before any fights. shalltear will have special troops that will blood steal and zombify enemy troops. delta will have extremely advanced units, some having deadly efficient artillery.
lastly a cool multiplayer would either be you play as the empires/kingdoms in the new world and/or as one of the supreme beings with their own special way to play or having a unique ability.
as you can tell i love both overlord and starcraft enough to autistically post about this. if some fucking reddit faggot didnt hand in the source code, i'd be cracking on this like a whipped slave. but now i have to learn every aspect of high level code just to attempt something close to the starcraft 1 engine.
obviously i have more ideas but this is what i brainstormed in a few minutes.
TL;DR: Starcraft with a mix of Mount and Blade with compartmentalized campaigns.

It's a haremshit/isekai manga but which definitely beats the current competition imo mostly due of looking like the old 90s isekais and MC clearly wanting to bone all the princesses even if he has a preference for one even if it's not particularly outstanding by itself.
