What happened to this genre? It seemed as though it was getting a mini resurgence in the AAA space back in 2014, when The Evil Within and Alien: Isolation released, in addition to general enthusiasm for Silent Hills before the announcement of its cancellation. Ever since then it's been on a somewhat steady decline. Will the likes of the Resident Evil 2 remake or Days Gone pump some life into the genre again?

What are some of the biggest survival horror games of the last five years? Let's examine what games released since 2013 and determine as to whether or not they should be considered as a "survival" horror game.

AAA games

>The Last of Us

>Alien: Isolation

>The Evil Within

>Bloodborne

>Dying Light

>Resident Evil 7

>The Evil Within 2

AA games

>State of Decay

>White Night

>Zombi

>Dead by Daylight

>Friday the 13th: The Game

>Hello Neighbor

>Metal Gear Survive

>State of Decay 2

>Call of Cthulhu

Indie games

>7 Days to Die

>Detention

>The Forest

>Agony

Upcoming

>Resident Evil 2 remake

>Days Gone

>The Last of Us Part II

>Dying Light 2

Thoughts? What am I missing? Should games like The Evil Within be removed considering it's more action horror than survival horror? Should Bloodborne stay, or should it be removed as it's really an action RPG with horror themes?

Calling Bloodborne, Last of Us, and fucking Hello Neighbor survival horror in any capacity makes me think you're either dumb or you're a feeler for a company trying to gauge interest in survivor horror. But either case, I'll bite.

Survivor Horror hasn't been on a decline, it's pretty much a dead thing. I'm hoping RE2 will be a good survivor horror game, but it's not like devs will start taking risks again with a niche genre. Days Gone looks as generic as they come and it's disappointing. It'll come out and be forgotten about within a week until some Game Awards/Marketing gives it the award for Best Sound Design or something and then be re-forgotten about 2 hours later.

There's a chunk of games I don't know in there, but it's a pretty unanimous agreement that any game where you walk around in the dark until the spooky egg timer goes off isn't survivor horror either–it's just streamer/let's player bait. And action horror is not survivor horror. Because 'action' means you're karate chopping monsters in half, which doesn't have the tone of helplessness that survivor horror is supposed to have. Action Horror just means Action, except the generic military dudes you gun down might as well be generic military dudes with werewolf masks on.

Does lostboy.exe count? It was in 2012 though

It's like 3D platformers, the genre really isn't going to come back. For survival horror, the problem is the difficulty. Most games cost to much and lower the difficulty to retard levels so more people will play. This goes against the design philosophy of most survival horror, as you have to manage your resources to make it. By dumbing that element down, you end up with a shooter. By removing it, you end up with a closet cowering simulator. Because there's no way to water down that part of the game without changing genres entirely, survival horror can't come back in the current development environment.

>The Last of Us

Fucking FNAF is more of a survival horror than those movies

There's one guy on itch.io making a bunch of old-school PSX style survival horror games that aren't bad. https://puppetcombo.itch.io/ Beyond that, I think the indie scene will probably try to keep the genre alive.

This guy's right. Current developers spend way too much money to take a chance on a niche genre. This is in direct despite of the explosion of Dark Souls, games like Dark Souls, and the unanimous praise of Cuphead. While people have no issue with difficult games, and outright welcome them with open arms, the publishers see it as too much of a risk to spend 100 million dollar advertising budgets on. It's up to indie developers to bring the spark back, although most indie horror games are staring at a dark hole in the wall until the Boogie Smoogie yells in your face.

Lost in Vivo is the best survival horror game since Silent Hill.

ill grant you that 2 is more action oriented and looses some of the survival horror aspects but the gameplay and controls are a lot better in 2

I don't think Extraction really counts as another game. It's just a waggle simulator.

It's a good action game, I'll admit. It wasn't what I wanted, though. Fleshing out the Isaac character with a voice and many shots of his face made it hard to projecting myself into the role, and I couldn't care less about his psychological problems. Also, better controls are a blight on survival horror games. I first played Dead Space on a 360, then I played Dead Space 2 on a PC with a mouse and keyboard. Between the improvements made by the developers to Isaac's movement, and my own accuracy with a mouse, the survival aspect of Dead Space was long gone.

RE7 was survival horror no matter how you slice it and Silent Hills would have been. VR creates a good environment for horror games and if they ever figure out VR movement Survival horror will boom again as a flagship genre like it did with the PS1.

3D platformers will never die. Mario is still selling well and it's an ideal genre for children and family games. The current "survival sim" with an open world trend won't last forever. People will want smaller more focused games as the boredom sets in with collectathons.

Calling any genre but FMV games is dumb. There's always room for it to be revived.

>>15902475

Dark souls spawned copies but they never understood what was good about the games. The surge improves combat vastly but it lacks in every other way.

>>15902636

Grey is a good Silent Hillish HL2 mod. There's also Alchemilia which is a direct silent hill fan game in the HL2 engine.

There's some good mods using Silent hill's style.

Speaking of Half-Life survival horror mods, Cry of Fear is great. The old graphics are better for horror games, in my opinion, because the less instantly recognizable something is as something, the more likely it is to startle, and horrify.

I agree completely about Dead Space 2 and Isaac, but I disagree on the matter of controls. I understand the argument entirely, but I've always found bad controls more frustrating than tense. And there are a lot of good horror games that have controlled well enough. I feel like bad controls are more of a crutch to create tension than relying on conventional mechanic design and artistic elements (sound, graphics, atmosphere, etc.).

You sound like a woman. Men don't insert themselves into other people.

>>15902706

Tank controls aren't bad controls. They're designed for the games they're in. When you're object hunting on still backgrounds it's better to have tank controls. DMC can suffer from camera issues for not having them with generally fixed cameras. Complaining about tank controls is like complaining Call of Duty doesn't have limit breaks. Some game mechanics work well for their purpose.

>It's like 3D platformers, the genre really isn't going to come back

We just had the year of the platformer, with Mario Odyssey, A Hat In Time, and that Banjo Kazooie homage.

>>15902706

Maybe we need to be more precise in language. We're talking about character mobility, not controls, because those are the same in both games, and they're both much more intuitive than the tank controls of old school horror games.

You're right that horror games can have good controls. Both games I recommended so far control like a standard fps. But in any horror game a sweet spot must be found where the player is limited enough in their capabilities that they can question their survival against even modest opposition.

>3 games is a year of a genre

So a flop, a middling success and the generation's mario game which sells to nintoddlers is your year of 3d platforming? The PS1 shit out more 3D platformers than that in a 6 month span.

Silent Hill Combat is terrible but the monsters never feel threatening. I'm not a weeb but you need to stop believing American horror is the only kind of horror a game can do. Psychological horror and body horror work well in games, maybe better than American style monster horror. Psychological horror can be dragged out much longer than monsters you get used to killing.

>platformer

There was also Snake Pass, and the Crash Bandicoot remakes. Yooka-Laylee sold over a million copies, and A Hat in Time is nearing a million; no flops there.

>Psychological horror

There isn't any other kind. All fear is based in uncertainty.
